What is your view on construction workers taking a dump in your bathroom while they're on the job in your house?

Man, one time at Burning Man the group I camped with decided to spring for a private porto just for folks at the camp/bar, around 30 of us and we paid to have it serviced as such. Many people suggested a combo lock for the porto that we'd only share with camp mates, but that was vetoed by enough people who thought it'd be too hard to remember the combo drunk and/or high (even though you could always just go ask someone) so we didn't get a lock. 2 days in, it was discovered by the public and was visible from the street, that night there was a literal shit mountain inside it. Like, higher than the seat, people must have been squatting to add their shit to the top of the mountain.

A lot of the unionized workers’ contracts mandate a portable toilet on the worksite, if the job exceeds X number of hours.

I'm glad you mentioned that. If, in the future, I have a tradesman working in my house, I'll try to make them feel comfortable enough to understand that they can, at the very least, use my bathroom when they need to go.
I had no idea they would feel so uncomfortable about it. Makes sense, I guess. People can be a game of Russian roulette sometimes. Never know which one is going to have a violent reaction to a completely normal and acceptable person in their midst.

Seriously I don't mind AT ALL if you use the bathroom. I just want you to feel comfortable, so whatever you need to do in there please do it. Mi baño es su baño amigo. I don't care if it's gonna be a Jackson pollack painting just please do what you need to do. Don't want there to be any awkwardness between us about using the old Lou lol. Sometimes the handle can be a little finicky and ya gotta jiggle it and hold it down longer than you think. Well you'll figure it out, I'm sure. Not the first time you've used a toilet I bet! Haha. Well if you have any trouble just yell and I'll try and help. Sorry if I'm being weird, just trying to make sure you are comfortable enough in my home to use the facilities however you need, and for however long you need. No judgement here buddy! I used to clean other people's houses for work, and once I really needed to poo and had no choice but to use their toilet. I was so embarrassed and cleaned the toilet after profusely and used a lot of "soap" (idk what it is in english) to avoid smells. If i had used air freshener it wouldve been obvious i pooped in their house. They were nice people and would absolutely have let me poop there but i was just embarrassed for some reason.

My dad is also a lifelong construction worker (now owns his own company) and I’ve asked him about this before - he always says that he will never use the restroom in someone’s home even if they offer, it’s completely out of the question for him. Might even be a company policy?
He also says that he’ll only accept water from homeowners if they offer, not other foods or beverages.

My dad is a social butterfly so if he has contractors over he makes everybody big sandwiches with lots of meat and is also out there working with them (really working and doing the job too). The only thing they have to put up with is him talking non stop about ancient history. He became lifelong best friends with his electrician this way, who even ended up living with us for a bit and my dad was at his death bed.
So anyway I always offer our contractors a drink at least and of course they can use the bathroom.

It comes down to how long the job is. On a job that will be more than a few days or will have several workers I ask the customer whether they prefer a portable out front or to allow workers to use the house toilet. As a contractor I prefer to bring in the portable to avoid problems. For instance, while a homes sewer may work just fine for a retiree couple 10 men can put a strain on it over the course of a week or two.

Hovering over isn't an issue in itself. We're used to customers hovering, pets having a nosey and kids wanting to "help" (I always leave minus a tool if the customer has kids..their gift for helping haha)..its when the customer who has hired us as they don't have the knowledge to do the job, then proceeds to tell us how to do it, or questions every move we make. No shit? I've really never thought much about it either way. It wasn't asked very often, but I never would've noticed or cared if they did. Until I had a crew outside doing a full day job and one knocked on the door like, "Sir, I'm so sorry. I wouldn't normally ask, but can I please use your restroom?" "of course. Third door on the left, sorry if it's dirty... I have three kids."
Gave the same crew a case of cold gatorade out of the fridge as I heard one complain his was hot and he wanted to stop on the way back. Treat people like people... it's not hard.

Whenever I have people over doing jobs for me, like plumbing, electric, garden or whatever, you can bet that they'll have access to water, coffee, tea and depending on how long they're at my house, I'll even offer fresh cookies or sandwiches. Hell, I once even ordered pizza for a group going the extra mile while working in my garden.
Those are people, human beings, just like yourself. They're doing a job you can't or don't want to do. Least you can do is treating them with respect. And letting them use your bathroom.

There were some people doing some work here where I live (I rent). It didn't really occur to me until the 3rd day when I overheard the apprentice say he needed to go to the toilet and his boss told him to wait. Turns out when they left at lunch they were going to the public toilet. If they asked I would've let them. The next day I offered them both hot and cold drinks, cookies and use of the bathroom. They declined all except for a little boiling water at lunch time. His coffee in his Thermos was apparently too strong and he wanted to add more water to weaken it a little. My only ask was that he come through the back door because he had been working in the Fadden and his shoes were all muddy. I didn't want them on the carpet.

Back when I was a homeowner, I hired a house-painting crew, and the man who showed up happened to be black. As they were packing up, the owner said maybe 1 person in 5 didn't make any kind of comments about it, and even fewer would let him in the house to use the bathroom (although they would let white employees in without hesitation). And this was ca. 2000!
I was that 1 person in 5, which was why he told me about it.

I was a manager at an IT services company in the past both in CA and later in TN. Anyway, in TN we had this rich business owner type and as was not terribly uncommon we would sometimes do IT project at business owners homes as well (camera installations, internet upgrades, etc). One time I was there with one of our other engineers who happened to be black and the owner made a comment to the effect that the guy with me had to use the staff bathroom around by the kitchen but I could use the bathroom right there. I was like, excuse me did I hear correctly and they confirmed. I turned to my colleague and was like grab your gear we are leaving, and told the owner that’s it we aren’t doing any more work for you or your company because you are racist. I technically didn’t have the authority to fire a client like that but was willing to bet my job that our owner would agree (he did). The worst part was that my colleague was like “oh yeah, that’s a common thing when we work in these big estate type houses, I just don’t make a deal out of it because I don’t want to lose my job”.

We had a moving company come in to move our house last year and one of the guys took a massive crap in our basement toilet and plugged it, then didn't say anything so we could fix it. Thankfully my husband caught it while doing a once over before he drove off or the basement might have been flooded before we sold the house.

Everyone who does a job in my house gets offered something to drink, a cup of coffee or tea. Snack if I have them. When it’s hot out I’ll even give the delivery guy a popsicle or a cold bottle of water. For some reason my packages always arrive in good condition.

There's plenty of people to be ashamed of. Some time ago, I've finally was able to hire an cleaning lady. She was concerned about the heat (the climate was very hot in deed) and I've just said to her: I have 3 air conditioners at my house. If you wish, I can turn on all of them, no worries. When she was really here, she didn't said anything about and started to clean. I've just turned all of them to her. At the middle of it, she asked for cold water. I've just told her: there's that in the fridge, but if you wish, there's juice in there as well and she could take it.
At the end of her job, she said that I was the first of her clients to do that for her. Why people just deny basic stuff for the people doing something for them, beats me. Those people aren't slaves and respect is the bare minimum that should be given for them, including their food.

Hell, I've done that for people working on the street half a block down from me! They're working to make lives better, even if indirectly, and manual labor is not forgiving!

As an appliance repair technician and a home theater installer for 20 years now. I appreciate this thread so much. I always try not to use a client's bathroom but I drink a lot of water. Especially in the summer. If I had to find a place to pee 4-5 times a day it could really be a pain. I will ask to pee while the washer is filling up and I'd say 90% of the time clients are "sure no problem " the rest of the time it is the worst kind of person. One that truly thinks their shit don't stink. Usually has a very expensive home. They always reply " I'd rather you not" when i have asked. I usually just say ok and try to leave asap. While I'm there tho. It's very uncomfortable .

"OK, sorry to have asked. I will leave now and go find a restroom. I will be back later." Pack up and go do just that. Bill them for the time you are gone.

I had a handyman in to put in an illegal washer/dryer hookup for cash in my then rented apartment. He took a dump so overpowering, we had to open all the windows - in February. It smelled like he ate nothing but onions and broccoli and hadn’t crapped for a month. It was heinous. Good quality work, though!

I knew a handyman that saved up and worked so hard to provide his family an awesome Christmas that for the next two months all he could afford to eat was broccoli and onions, he of course was able to feed his family right tho. Man those veggies took a toll on his digestive system. Good guy though!

Isn’t that just the smell of the sulfur compounds in the broccoli and onions? My dad use to eat broccoli smoothie is every morning when I was a teenager and he said that was the healthiest he ever felt. Although, his farts could have been weaponized at the right concentrations

I think if a port a pottie is provided then it's fair to expect them to use it as long as it's usable but on a worksite there has to be a bathroom. It's like all the public parks in the winter time why is there never an unlocked washroom?

You know what’s worse than that? Traveling to Italy and having to pee between 1 and 3 when all the businesses in the entire city are closed and there are no public toilets. And then having that happen every. Single. Day. Of your trip. Each time in a different city.

A bathroom is a bathroom. Made for #1 and #2. Anyone who enters my home is welcome to do either. We are civilized humans privileged with running water + sewer.

My view??
Look, when a tradesman enters one's house to perform works, it is assumed that, being a human being with bodily functions, they will require use of the amenities, including the toilet.
Now, I am a tradesman myself, however the trade I am in doesn't require extended periods of time being spent on the customers property. Generally, therefore, I rarely require use of the toilet while on the job. But a construction worker will naturally be spending multiple hours on one job, necessitating their use of the toilet facilities while on task.
Don't like it? Don't get construction done.

Why would I object if it means that they get the work done faster?

Better than them doing it in one of the other rooms, that's for sure. That's what the bathroom is for.
