It's probably my single biggest pet peeve. There will be no one behind me, and someone has to speed up just to cut me or someone in front of me off, resulting in me/us having to brake.
It's madness.
55
u/coybus08 Apr 01 '23
It’s the opposite of pulling out in front of you on an empty road.
26
u/ialsohaveinternet Apr 02 '23
Surely, the opposite of 'pulling out in front of you on an empty road' is 'pushing in behind you on a busy road'.

It's even worse when they don't merge behind or in front of you, rather right where you are! They wanna push you into the other lane.

Or merging onto an empty highway well ahead of someone in the right lane but they ride your ass like you just blatantly cut them off

u/Mr_Golf_Club Apr 02 '23
I have 0 shame accelerating when I can tell it’s obvious too, don’t care if they know it because I already know what they’re up to.

Fr the guy could have been one of them drivrers who speed up and slow down contantly. Edit: looking at it again, he seams to be low key trying to stop the pass.

u/Scared-Accountant288 Apr 01 '23
People are wayyyyyy too competitive. Driving is not the daytona 500
22
u/dhof1980 Apr 02 '23
Seriously. Like its ok to be behind someone.
10
u/obxtalldude Apr 02 '23
And it's ok to brake when someone is about to do something really stupid.
It's weird how reluctant the drivers are to slow in so many of these videos - half the time they'd rather swerve into the other lane.

u/BorodinoWin Apr 03 '23
fr. my first thought was that the cameraguy was ready to lose his car over 3 mph.
does he speed up when he sees the car merging???

Including OP! OP saw the shitty person and rapidly accelerated when they started to pass.
OP and SUV driver are both idiots.

I would have been tempted to slow down and let 'em in.

Watch out, admitting you don’t drive like a raging asshole is a good way to get flamed around these parts
13
u/obxtalldude Apr 02 '23
I'm hoping by the upvotes here this anti braking culture is changing.
It so weird how people know they are near an idiot, and don't try and get away in half of these videos. I much prefer to watch the action from a distance.

u/Eveready116 Apr 02 '23
Right. Which is what sane people do when they give a shit about not being the root cause of an accident that kills someone or their family and having to live with the legal consequences and life lifelong guilt and shame.
Idiots need to be shown what mangled car corpses look like during driver’s education.

Are you just hoping everyone ignores the fact you floored it to try blocking him? Would have all been much less of a dangerous situation if you didn’t fixate on trying to prevent him from merging in front of you.
44
u/altimax98 Apr 02 '23
OP has another deleted post where they did the same thing
Some people wonder why they are magnets for bad drivers, maybe it’s just that they are the problem too
6
u/Trevski Apr 02 '23
People around here have even confused "tips for defensive driving" with "victim blaming". Its ridiculous.

u/Delta_V09 Apr 02 '23
Would it be an idiots in cars post if the dashcam wasn't also an idiot who either makes the situation worse or fails to take even basic measures to avoid an accident?
70
u/Sythasu Apr 02 '23
Right? OP made the situation way more dangerous by insisting on being in front themselves. If you had continued at the same speed you were driving before they tried to get over, this is a non event.
14
u/eata22 Apr 02 '23
Ya videos like this are the reason that I can’t wait for actually functional self driving cars.
Then we will need to adopt the Japanese program of taxing the absolute shit out of old cars so people just get the new ones.
Both of these drivers are a danger on the road. Op was fine until they decided to be a dickhead and endanger everyone else on the road instead of just backing off. The other guy is a moron for not just merging behind op/ taking the next exit to make it back. There is always another exit up the road.
→ More replies (1)-22
u/afa78 Apr 02 '23
How was he supposed to know they wanted to merge? That idiot didn't even have their blinker on!
14
u/resttheweight Apr 02 '23
With the fact that the signal is on at the end (even if it’s late), I give some benefit of the doubt that the other person could have had their signal on earlier. I find it entirely plausible they had it on while trying to gauge if they should merge in front or behind OP, and maybe they decided to try to go behind OP, but a car behind OP closed the gap. So they went to pass OP, and when OP saw, they sped up to block again.
Regardless, it makes zero sense for OP to speed up while they are literally exiting, so I give no benefit of the doubt that the turn signal mattered one bit and think they would have blocked them regardless. Nor do I have any doubts that OP knew they wanted over in their lane, with or without a signal. OP is free to include sound on the clip to disprove that they sped up to block someone in a section of road where rationality dictates that they are actually required to do the opposite.

Are you as dumb as you appear to be or are you pretending?10
u/afa78 Apr 02 '23
Not as stupid as you who didn't notice the front of the car, the right front blinker not on at all, and they still go straight in their lane. It isn't until their lane breaks away that they decide to turn it on and merge over where they clearly shouldn't. Now tell me you're not really that stupid to not have noticed that?
19
u/Mediocre_Airport_576 Apr 02 '23

How about the idiot who upon seeing a car that is going to pass him and merge decides that is the right time to accelerate hard. OP is no better than the merging car. Definitely the kind of person to tailgate someone just so another car can’t do a safe lane change.
160
u/Tabeyloccs Apr 02 '23
Took the sound away so we couldn’t hear your RPMs skyrocket as you attempted to stop him from passing lol
30
u/Old-Improvement-2563 Apr 02 '23
You can see the white lines to the right of op start passing by faster so you know they sped up.
39
38
u/Arquit3d Apr 02 '23
Maybe OP had 5 cars tailgating him and there was no space to merge on the back. That doesn't justify merging the way he did it but the video doesn't tell the full story. Also, the "idiot" could have merged safely if OP wouldn't have accelerated last minute.
-17
u/afa78 Apr 02 '23
The burden of 'doing it safely' is on the vehicle merging, not the one already in the lane.
21
u/TheOkComputerGuy Apr 02 '23
The burden of arriving at your destination safely is on everyone on the road. That’s went they teach you common rules. OP is outpacing cars in both the right and left lanes so he’s already going 10-15 over to make a clean pass if they are all going the speed limit.
He’s an ass.
8
u/Kwintty7 Apr 02 '23
If idiot A merging had hit the barrier, then idiot B speeding up would have hit him. But I'm sure the satisfaction of knowing that the burden of safety wasn't on them would have comforted idiot B during the following weeks in hospital.
51
u/32_Dollar_Burrito Apr 02 '23
The burden of safety is on EVERY DRIVER. Even if you have the right of way, being safe is more important than being right
→ More replies (5)15
24
u/LukeLarsnefi Apr 02 '23
Speaking generally there is usually also a requirement that other drivers maintain their speed, don’t try to block a merge, and otherwise behave reasonably to avoid accidents.
→ More replies (1)17
u/Not_RAMBO_Its_RAMO Apr 02 '23
But the vehicle trying to merge attempted to do it safely; the cammer was the one who took the situation from safe to unsafe.
10
8
u/afa78 Apr 02 '23
Safely? Without even using their blinker and almost slamming into the divider?
23
u/CatradoraSheRa Apr 02 '23
OP floored it to block the van from getting over, OP gained like 15mph speed as the van tried to pass them, you can tell by watching the cars on the left especially the white SUV on the far upper right
OP admits to it here: https://www.reddit.com/r/IdiotsInCars/comments/128x8ql/comment/jem2axd/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=web2x&context=3
OP floored it, watch the white SUV in the far upper left, it's driving away from OP, but by the end OP is going faster than them, because OP tried their best to block the van from passing them
Yes indeed i did, because they could have easily merged behind me safely and with more than one and a half seconds from the barrier.
4
u/Arquit3d Apr 02 '23
Blinker is on for as long as it gets into the frame. Time to back up and admit that was not a good argument. Manouver should have been aborted, but for me, OP is the idiot for speeding up. He wanted to win this one!
6
u/afa78 Apr 02 '23
Did anyone not notice the front blinker NOT being on at all till after their lane broke away??? Does anyone here realize our vehicles have blinkers in front too?
3
u/Not_RAMBO_Its_RAMO Apr 02 '23 edited Apr 02 '23
I already asked you if you were dumb enough to claim that they didn't have their blinker on, thank you for confirming that the answer is "yes."The car attempting to merge wouldn't have been anywhere near the divider if the cammer didn't attempt to block them. They would have safely passed and merged. If you are the owner of a vehicle and/or a valid driver's license, please get rid of it.
EDIT: The person I replied to showed me that the car attempting to merge didn't actually flip on their indicator until they were already past the cammer.
6
u/gman584 Apr 02 '23
OP accelerated, don't believe his bs, start of the vid he was barely passing the truck on the right, then once the SUV came in he started to speed and suddenly passed the truck AND the sedan. He caused this by going slow in the passing lane and speeding up to block the poor guy who didn't wanna get stuck behind the person going speed limit in the left lane
6
u/Check_Their_History Apr 02 '23
Well he probably didn't think you would be an ahole and speed up to not let him in to then post here for karma. You saw him coming, got mad, and hit the gas.
37
u/deez_nuts_77 Apr 02 '23
interesting choice to increase speed right before the road split as the guy was trying to pass you….
34
u/likeastonrr Apr 02 '23 edited Apr 02 '23
The driver(not sure if it’s OP) clearly speeds up to make it harder for them to merge tho. You can tell by the lines. They’re both idiots
109
u/philharlow Apr 01 '23
Looked to me like cammer sped up and made that way more dangerous than if they had just maintained their speed. I see two idiots
51
u/Educational-Fig-2330 Apr 02 '23
Yep cammer tried to make the other guy miss the exit or force him to merge behind. Typical nonsense with obligatory "I'm the victim, look at this idiot" afterwards. People just need to feel big sometimes, and I guess this does the trick for them.
15
u/StickyIgloo Apr 02 '23
How fast was cammer going initially and how fast was he going at the end?
29
u/tommmmmmy_ Apr 02 '23
70 mph to 88 mph
(assuming the white lines on the road are standard 10ft lines with 30ft spacing)
9
u/Nieshtze Apr 02 '23
How did you calculate this?
23
u/tommmmmmy_ Apr 02 '23
I went through the video frame by frame. Every lane divider dash he passes I took that time, then took the average time difference between those. I did this at the start of the video and then later as the car is passing/merging in front of him. Then (40 ft) / (time diff in seconds) * 0.68 = (miles per hour)
This could be an over/underestimate if the lane divider dashes aren't exact, but as long as they are a consistent length and spacing, it means he sped up 18 mph.
24
u/StickyIgloo Apr 02 '23
The speeds don't actually matter, its the fact that he sped up by 30% or whatever. Thats more than just natural speed variance.
17
3
u/Nieshtze Apr 02 '23

u/joesnowblade Apr 02 '23
Look at the lines on the right of your car, as the other car come into frame the timing shortens meaning you sped up. No requirement for you to let them in but you put yourself in danger by not driving defensively.
If it were me I would have let him in and continued as I was going.
JMHO, yours may differ but you should be ok with it as I am of yours.
4
u/MathematicianNo1922 Apr 02 '23
No you're the fucking idiot for speeding up an additional 20 mph just to try and block someone who was going faster than you who would have merged perfectly fine if you weren't an asshole.

4
u/Educational-Fig-2330 Apr 02 '23
I have speed turned off in my dashcam, not because I expect to post to reddit and garner sympathy when I'm the actual asshole, but because I might need that in court or for insurance purposes, and I'm usually speeding. I preemptively plea da fif.

u/Strostkovy Apr 02 '23
Also because they can report inaccurate numbers. They often have a huge delay.
-12
u/Breadddick Apr 02 '23

I have a friend who’s like this and I don’t understand why 👀👀 she assumes everyone on the road is in a negative serious competition with her tryna spite her and her attitude while driving is “I’ll show them” as if she’s enacting revenge.. when she was in the car with me, I was going the speed limit and she got mad, bcc I wasn’t speeding like how she does , in the car she’s just, no patience , she’ll swerve In between cars as if she’s in a motorcycle. Don’t worry she just wrecked last month and almost died because shed rather rave and take space rather than slow down and save her own life. Her own child was in the car too btw.. I’m glad she’s okay though, she’s still my friend. It was her fault and she got this truck driver mad so he kinda drove her off the road or something like that. It was inevitable. I’m such a careful driver , I will never understand how people like my own dad drive as if this mobile murder machine is nothing but a toy

No one is gonna talk about the driver who filmed this clearly speeding up to try and stop the other person from getting in front of their car? Maybe if you just kept the same speed and let the car merge instead of trying to stop them from getting in front of you while you’re clearly going slower there wouldn’t have been a close call in the first place. You’re just as reckless as the person who cut in front of you

u/hypespud Apr 02 '23
As the driver here with the camera, if you notice this early, you should for your own safety and even to protect the idiot car, slow down to avoid them, you don't want to keep the same pace/speed and put yourself at risk
He could have killed himself, but also killed you if he impacted that barrier and then hit you right after
I would strongly consider slowing down and letting the idiot merge, that is the core of defensive driving, and OP to be fair you did not do defensive driving here
Obviously the other guy is more in the wrong, but you want to protect yourself here more than anything
