Hey OP, I would vouch for you that the corner is blind and the police truck may have silenced their siren so you had very little time (~3 seconds) to react. Police present some risk to the public when engaging in a chase which is what it seems like was happening.
However, from your replies you come across like a confrontational dickhead. It may help you on the road as well as in other situations if you cooled your attitude a little. Just a friendly suggestion from me.

Lights were on, speeding, and on the wrong side of the road, they were probably trying to get somewhere quick so I’m guessing there’s no audio because the siren was on

Are you a gambling addict or something?
You made the post and multiple people have commented that essentially the lack of sound makes it look like you were the idiot and not the police officer.
Police are allowed to cross double yellow lines in emergencies with their lights and sirens flashing. You removed the sound but the lights were clearly flashing, leaving everyone to assume the siren was active as well.
If you want to leave the video as is that’s fine, but as is you look like one of the idiots in the video.

Yes I agree with this post, I think the cop was doing a reasonable maneuver while running lights and sirens.

Hey OP, I'm sorry you're being dragged through the mud here. You definitely were not the idiot and you did nothing wrong whatsoever.
Solid double yellow line means no overtaking under any circumstances, yes? Of course emergency vehicles can override that rule, but they must still drive with the safety of other road users as their top priority.
The police officer would have done well to be patient and wait for clearer visibility.
51
u/tbrand009 Nov 27 '22
Cop maybe could/should have waited 5 more seconds to pass the idiot SUV, but the OP also wasn't paying enough attention to the road ahead and make absolutely zero attempt to avoid a possible collision.
-12
Nov 27 '22

21
u/tbrand009 Nov 27 '22
We drive with the 2 second rule because that's the average time it takes to see an event and respond to it on the road. The cop was visible 3 seconds before you passed. OP was not being as attentive as they should have been.
11
u/Minute-Ad-2148 Nov 27 '22
Watching the video in slow motion and pausing it, it is not obvious that the cop is in his lane until the 33rd second, before that it just looks like the cop is turning in the proper lane. The cop flys past him right when the 34th second begins. Again this is from looking at the clock on the dashcam. At most OP had 1.5 seconds to respond and at worst he had less than one second.
17
21
u/tbrand009 Nov 27 '22
Even if the cop wasn't in his lane, OP is still required to move over for emergency vehicles.
→ More replies→ More replies7
u/A_Harmless_Fly Nov 27 '22
Bruh, the three second rule is about following distance. Following distance in the same direction, not going over the speed limit in the opposite direction.
https://www.autoaccident.com/what-s-the-3-second-rule.html
It's far safer to go with three and expand on that in poor conditions. Also older/heavy cars have longer braking distance, so keep that in mind.
3
u/tbrand009 Nov 27 '22
2 or 3, either way the time is based on your ability to react. I'm not saying OP needed to come to a complete halt before the cop passed him, I'm saying OP should have had any reaction to the oncoming vehicle.
9
u/tbrand009 Nov 27 '22
The right handed curve means you (in the left seat) should have seen the oncoming vehicle before the camera.
I don't refute that this was an unsafe pass by the LEO, but that doesn't change the fact that you had zero reaction to it.

u/PMs_You_Stuff Nov 27 '22
Um, no? Emergency vehicles have no right to drive on the other side of the road on a blind corner. Emergency vehicles can only make normally unlawful maneuvers when they're sure there is no danger. Driving into oncoming traffic around a blind corner would never be considered safe.
-2
u/Strider_27 Nov 27 '22
Don’t know why you’re being downvoted. I drive emergency vehicles with lights and sirens and I can guarantee you it’s my ass if I break a road law and get into an accident. Can I break the road laws? Yes. But I better be damn sure it’s safe to do so. The cop is the idiot here. Not OP

It is very possible that the police truck was going too fast for a speedy reaction by the guy who overtook the truck and had to get into the wrong lane to evade a crash. Emergency vehicles are more important than civilian vehicles but he didn't "almost" hit you, obviously he's a skilled driver.

Yes, but they did have emergency lights activated. The law doesn't require both. I can see them all the way at the curve in the video. If the video shows them that far, then you should have seen them from further.

Poor excuse. You failed to do what the law requires you to do and obviously were not paying attention ahead of you.
Thankfully the officer was trained in emergency vehicle operations and is used to idiots on the road when running code 3.
You are the idiot here, not the officer. You failed to obey the law, failed to pay due attention to your surroundings and are attempting to place blame on someone else for your failures.
Edit to add, only one vehicle (besides the LEO) on this video was paying proper attention to the road and their surroundings.

I never said anything about reading your mind. The video shows that either you didn't know what to do when confronted with emergency lights, didn't care about the emergency lights, and/or failed to pay enough attention to react properly to emergency vehicles.
And your comments show that you want to blame the person following the law for your idiocy.

Pretty sure the law states you can't pass on a curved road. Don't think having lights on makes it an exception. Because it doesn't make you that much more visible, especially in broad daylight. Officer made a dangerous pass by not having sirens on and only the lights giving OP very little time to respond to the scenario that he put him in.
8
u/harley9779 Nov 27 '22
Running code 3 allows emergency vehicles to ignore traffic laws in order to respond to an emergency situation.
The lights exempt them from all traffic laws.
→ More replies-4
u/OkCarrot89 Nov 27 '22
I like how you post a state statute without considering that there are 49 other states plus territories and other countries this could be in.
Also, putting your emergency lights on isn't a good excuse for reckless driving, especially not a police officer, when nothing they do is really considered an emergency.
Please throw your license away, thank you.
8
u/harley9779 Nov 27 '22
I posted states statute because OP specifically said that's the state they were in.
It wasn't reckless driving. That's what emergency lights and sirens are for. To get to an emergency and for idiots to get out of the way.
Try reading some traffic laws.
→ More replies1
u/Soundophocles Nov 27 '22
From the same statute you posted yet you and the officer in above video conveniently ignore:
(b) This Section shall not operate to relieve the driver of an authorized emergency vehicle from the duty to drive with due regard for the safety of all persons using the highway.
3
u/harley9779 Nov 27 '22
No one has ignored that. Running code 3 authorizes the officer to disregard all traffic laws. But still requires them to drive accordingly to prevent accidents.
In this case the officer was paying attention. First he saw the idiots in his lane that failed to yield (except for the F250 that did yield). He passed them on the oncoming lane. Then when he encountered the idiot OP, he changed into the other lane when OP failed to yield.
As no accidents occurred, the officer was obviously exercising due regard for the safety of all persons.
-2
u/Soundophocles Nov 27 '22
By speeding and illegally passing on a double yellow center line and blind curve, he sure appeared to not drive with regard to the safety of all persons on the highway.

u/bob_but_backwards Nov 27 '22
I was teaching someone to drive once and the police came behind us with lights on and siren so I said pull over to the side of the road. Instead of doing that, this person swerved from lane to lane in a panic until the police pulled us over and told us very sternly what those flashing lights mean. That kid learned to pull over for emergency vehicles after that, let me tell you.
10
u/harley9779 Nov 27 '22
Having driven emergency vehicles code 3, I can definitively say that many people lose all of their senses when they see emergency lights and hear sirens. It's amazing how difficult pulling over to the right is for so many people.
-1
u/GiGaBYTEme90 Nov 27 '22 edited Nov 27 '22

9
u/harley9779 Nov 27 '22
No siren is required. The law says visual or audible signal. His emergency lights were clearly on.
-4
u/GiGaBYTEme90 Nov 27 '22
And OP slowed down as soon as they saw them. What's your point?
13
u/harley9779 Nov 27 '22
The law doesn't say slow down when you see emergency lights. It says pull over to the right and stop.

Genuine question to the people in this thread:
OP posted the clip with audio, revealing there was no siren activated. Cop clearly crossed the double yellow around a bend on a hill, making it difficult for OP to react quickly. So my question is, what exactly did OP do wrong or could have differently? It seems people are still displeased even after OP posts the clip with audio after the bombards of accusations and false assumptions.
3
u/Mike2220 Nov 27 '22
So my question is, what exactly did OP do wrong or could have differently?
They could've reacted at all. I get they probably wouldn't have time to pull over and stop, but they didn't even turn to the side at all to even try to get over when the cop was in view.
Like cop lights are fucking bright they would've seen that easily (dash cam has lower saturation else bright lights would wash out the rest of the image)
