STAY CLEAN 2022 YEAR-LONG CHALLENGE! This thread updated daily - Check in here!

Daily news: This is Saturday, August 13, and today is day 225 of the year-long Stay Clean 2022 challenge. Keep fighting the good fight!

If you think you should still be on this list but aren't, you probably got removed for not checking in at least once per month. However, if you let me know you're still with it I'll re-add you.

Guidelines:

  • At the end of this post is a list of people who have signed up for the challenge, and who are still in the running. That means that they have not needed to reset because of a relapse or slip.
  • Please check in with the group in the comments as often as you want! Feel free to share thoughts, feelings, experiences, progress, wisdom, encouragement and whatever else!
  • IMPORTANT: if you relapse, please post a comment to that effect here and I will remove your name from the list. We will not judge you or shame you, we have all been there.
  • Participants are required to check in once per month. If you have a "~" after your name, you have yet to check in during August. If it is still there at the end of August 31, you will be removed from the list, in order to keep the numbers as realistic as possible.
  • We will not be accepting any new participants, but even if you're not on the list, please feel free to check in in the update threads anyway! And be sure to join us for the Stay Clean monthly thread!

Good luck!

There are currently 42 out of 941 original participants. That's 4%. These 42 participants represent 9450 pornfree days in 2022! That's more than 25 years.

Think before relapsing

After a hard day I was determined to relapse, but first I asked myself these questions and answered them from experience:

  1. Will I feel better afterwards? No, because it hasn't happened a single time in 3 years.
  2. Will I only spend the intended amount of time? No, because it never happens.
  3. Will I still have time to enjoy the other things I like (movies, reading etc.) after an evening binge? No, because it will consume whole night and before or after that, any other activities will seem uninteresting.
  4. Will it make my anxiety, productivity and sleep worse? Yes, because I will feel shitty and won't be able to sleep. Much of my anxiety comes from being unable to quit.
  5. Will it make me feel satisfied during a binge? No, because I always look for perfection but I never find it.
  6. Will it really be a last time? How many times I've told myself that?

This really helped me think twice, I hope it helps you too. You can think up countless similar questions, but probably all the answers will be negative.

Life really does gets better and brighter after quitting your addiction!

My happiness and self esteem are higher than ever since quitting porn. While I do recognize I can always do better, getting over the barrier that porn threw into my life is a significant milestone in bettering myself.

What I struggled with most in this challenge was only putting my efforts towards quitting porn, and not much else. I've learned that the main reason people demonstrate unhealthy behavior is because they don't treat themselves well/their needs aren't being met. You may know it, but may not fully understand until you go through it and pull yourself out of the mess.

For me, the reason why I failed so many times to quit porn was because I wasn't really doing anything with my life. The more I did nothing, the more likely I caved in and relapsed, and vise versa. My mind gave in to the brain rot, and I lacked the ability to see the depth of how bad this all was. It's that moment where you feel like your life is being limited, but don't know why.

I realize my brain on porn is incompatible with being in a relationship. I actually had to leave my last relationship in order to fully quit porn (not the only reason I left, obv). The main side effects were; often doubting whether my love was real, not being able to handle conflict, not being able to enjoy intimacy, checking out other women, etc. I knew all of it was wrong, yet it I let it happen.

However, since quitting, a lot has changed. I smile for no reason, I don't freak out when I am around strangers, I handle challenges with a cooler head, I have stopped putting women on a pedestal, obviously my sexual health is much better, and I am a lot prouder of who I've become.

Here's one a lot of people don't mention. If you need therapy, get it. This is no replacement for therapy. If you suffer from depression, anxiety or trauma no matter how well you're doing with quitting porn, I suggest getting it treated first. I needed this advice earlier on, so I'm just passing it along.

I know this is a huge dump of info, but it's everything I learned over my experience. And since this subreddit helped nudge me in the right direction, I feel I owe this much to help others too. Good luck to all!

Porn free for 4 years

I want to add that I have no ideological dog in this fight; some people can watch porn and suffer little to no consequences from it. I just know for a fact that I am not one of those people.

And after the compulsions and anxieties left me, that’s been the biggest realization that’s helped me to stay off of it. That pornography is not for me. I don’t need any extremely advanced or scientific reason to continue my sobriety, I just know deep down in my soul that it’s not for me.

I think the main reason my pornography habit started was because I was sexually assaulted by my first girlfriend and my self-esteem and confidence plummeted after that. I tended to isolate myself and believe that no women in real life wanted me anyway.

I was in a relationship for close to 4 years but I recently ended it for a lot of reasons. I still wonder if I should give it another chance, though. I also have a physical crush on a bartender in the city I live in, but I’m old and mature enough to know that physical crushes don’t often end up well, and 99% of the time, the women don’t reciprocate the feelings anyway.

So anyways that’s part of my story and I’m glad to find an online community that wants to stay porn free.

Is this subreddit Anti-Masturbation?

I’ve seen some people say that you need to fully abstain from masturbation and that its not healthy for you. I want to hear your opinions on this and if i should quit masturbating permanently.

The best qualities we can have when struggling with porn addiction, IMO, is acceptance, patience and understanding.

Upvotes

Disclaimer: this is just my own experience and opinion, so take what I say with a grain of salt. What works for you may not work for the person next to you. Still, I feel like a lot of what I will say can be universally applied and may help ease the burden for some, if not all, of you.

Firstly, I feel that we will never get rid of a problem until we have accepted that there is a problem. I feel this is common knowledge, but I often find this slipping my mind when I get sucked into compulsive porn use. I will lie to myself and tell myself there is no problem. I will tell myself there is no harm in indulging. I will then quickly get pulled into the rabbit hole of porn use, to a point where it is obviously causing problems for me in my day-to-day life. I can't speak for everyone, but for myself, and I imagine the individuals here, porn use can quickly become something that causes significant problems to your wellbeing.

Once we have accepted we have a problem, I feel the next and most crucial step is patience. This is a difficult skill to practise, but if we allow ourselves to see things as they are, we can see that this is our only path forward. The human brain is a complex and confusing organ, and we still have a lot to learn about it; one thing that is clear from years of research, is that we have far less control over things than we think.

With that being said, I think it is important to practise patience when dealing with porn addiction. If you have the intention to stop, you are already halfway there, all you need now is time. Trust the process and, with time, the pull of porn will become less and less of a strain. This may seem like a passive approach, but I personally believe this is the only way to move forward. Oftentimes, when we push for change, all we end up doing is causing more stress for ourselves and, in turn, exacerbate the problem.

Lastly, is understanding. It was Albert Einstein who said, "Peace cannot be kept by force; it can only be achieved by understanding." This quote can be applied to any problem and I feel it is fitting for porn addiction. The only way we can beat this addiction is by understanding it. If we can recognize how the problem occurred and how it maintained itself, we can better recognize and avoid these patterns from repeating in the future. Remember that you are a human animal and understand your limitations.

There should be no shame in weakness, in fact, it can be one of the most beautiful things to admit our own weaknesses. We should not strive to be perfect because this is unrealistic, and frankly impossible. In fact, it is only through our imperfections that we will ever learn and develop empathy for ourselves and others.

In japanese culture, there's a belief that only imperfect objects, like a cracked teacup, can truly be beautiful. This is called wabi sabi. Try to let go of the quest for perfection, and instead accept the beauty that lies in all of life's imperfections. The result will be extra energy, less stress and a longer life.

In conclusion, I advocate for the passive approach when dealing with porn-related problems. The only thing you need is intention and I believe the rest will follow in its own time. I know a lot of people may disagree with this approach in favour of a more active approach, but in my humble opinion and through my own experience, it is the only way. I hope this helped some of you and best of luck in the future.

Day 40

Today was a good day. I went for a solid run, and hung out with some friends. I also got in a meditation, so that’s good. I think I’m going to do a dopamine detox tomorrow and maybe the day after, since I feel like I’ve been on screens probably too much lately. There is little point in trying to quit prom if you replace it with another damaging habit. I’ve found that reflecting on my actions and thoughts has helped me to evaluate where my priorities are and what some of my habits are. Anyways, that’s all I’ve got for tonight, see you tomorrow.

Day 3

I'm 17 years old, and I've struggled with porn and masturbation addiction since I was maybe 13. I think for the past almost 2 years, I've jerked it on average more than 1 time per day, and I've recently decided that this is not the life I want to live and that I can and will do something against it. So I'm trying to quit porn for good. Yeah, I might jerk off once a week on a planned day because I don't think I can go cold turkey after such a long time. But no porn for sure.

I'm on day 3 right now and I feel minor withdrawal symptoms, like I'm missing a drug that I need to take. But I'm gonna push through because this is one of the areas of my life that I believe is bringing down the other areas the most.

Happy 20th.

It's like new years - we all want a place to restart and this is mine.

I fall under stress all too often and it weakens me to the degree that I convince myself I need porn (or a wank) as a release. And I'm quite fed up with this horrible exchange. I'm only getting more tolerant to porn and it's only getting harder to get myself hard.

It's terrible, and I feel an immense amount of insatisfaction with myself. As this was my doing.

It's almost second nature to just jerk one off in the shower, or checkout a couple videos before bed. It's not even horniness; it's boredom.

It's funny how sex usually builds a strong connection with whoever the other person is, but yet I want only to get away from myself. Since, all in all, it's me that's the problem, right?

I dislike where I am with myself, and I have a strong urge and desire to change; to give myself a chance to enjoy my own company.

That's my goal. To like myself again.

Pray for me - please.

Happy 20th.

Demon slaying and rekindling my love for gaming

Upvotes

I’m turning 27 this month. I’ve always had a love for gaming, during my teen years in particular I fell in love with the medium and experienced so many awesome stories and adventures with my Wii, PS3, and Nintendo DS. But as my porn addiction took hold of me shortly after moving into my first apartment at age 20, I spent less and less time on it as the years went by. I started spending money on porn subscriptions instead of games. I could no longer focus on a game for very long without giving in to my distracting urges to PMO. My consoles have since collected dust, and I’ve stopped doing my other hobbies as well while spending nearly every day off at home indulging in porn. That’s been my life for the past 7 years.

But recently, since abstaining from porn this past week, I’ve rekindled my love for gaming in a way that frankly makes me feel like a kid again. Tonight I replayed some of my favorite games from my childhood, and it made me tear up, because I remembered, this is what I love. Not porn.

This weekend has been awesome for me, because I’m diving back into my favorite hobby for the first time in years. I’m reading gaming news and browsing gaming subreddits again, and I’m downright giddy at the thought of finally playing all the games I’ve bought but never had the energy, desire or attention span to play. I was just playing some Doom Eternal on my new PS5, and man, I had to stop and marvel at how far console gaming has come. Stunning, bloodpumping 4k/60fps gameplay, I can’t get enough of it.

I honestly think at least for me, gaming might be a huge key to beating this addiction. It’s engaging, stimulating, and gives me a much healthier source of dopamine. Plus it’s a fantastic way to keep my mind occupied during moments of downtime at home when I’m most vulnerable to relapse.

Personally I’m making sure to steer clear of any games with attractive female characters until I make more progress with my reboot, as I’ve admittedly been triggered by far too many virtual babes to count, but as long as it’s a game like Doom, with nothing but demons, bullets, and nonstop action, porn doesn’t even cross my mind. (just realized slaying demons is pretty fitting & symbolic…we all know how much of a demon porn addiction really is)

Anyway, it’s 3am and I just needed to get these thoughts out, maybe some of you can relate.

Godspeed, brothers.

Now let’s kick this demon’s ass.

Two days sober

I know it isn't much, but hey it's something. I'm currently 19 years old, but have been struggling with this life stealing addiction for way longer than I would like to admit. I'm struggling right now, but there is no turning back. I hate you porn. You've ruined so many aspects of my life and I will never go back to you ever again. I fell for the lie that told me you would make my pain go away, but instead of that you amplified it ten fold, and isolated me from the people I love. I'm tearing up just my writing this lol

Please give me some advice

I am a 16 year old fighting against pornography. After 5 months of abstaining from pmo, I relapsed on Thursday. Please could someone lend me advice. I aspire to someone great in the future and my siblings, parents, and close friends look up to me. I don’t want to live a life that will let them down. Thank you

is their some sorta shift that happens mentally?

I was a couple days without a phone, and only masturbated once via laptop. In this time I read books to pass the time and yadda yadda. But idk I think I felt something happening. I think I was without stimuli and porn and I think I felt clearer. I noticed the first day when I was horny, the feeling to watch porn nawled until I did on my laptop. I think porn is causing more issues than I realize and I want to rid myself of it. So my questions to you guys is in your sobriety was there a shift? and if there was, when did it mentally happen? I'm talking about like a clearer head and without the mental toll of watching porn. Maybe my perception of things changed of the world changed somehow. Idk. Did this also happen to you guys?

What Would Tell a Porn Watcher?

What would you tell a man who claims he uses porn as a coping mechanism to not date women or meet girls in real life, simply for the fact that its easier to watch pornography and get a release from that, than having to risk rejection or embarrassment in public after approaching someone. This is something I've been curious about, because I've heard people tell me this in the past. What would you say and how would you convince them to stop?

Porn Addiction is the Final Boss

No other activity I have done compares to the feeling I get from porn and masturbation. I've been addicted to video games before but the urges to play games pales in comparison to the urges to PMO. It's like all roads lead to porn. Porn can solve everything from boredom to frustration to loneliness.

I cannot imagine myself battling any other future addiction that is this tough to beat. It feels that past porn is just a void, like you've beat the final boss of a game. Except it feels like this final boss will stay with me for my entire life.

Questions About Flatlining

I honestly didn't think I was that addicted. I knew it would be hard to quit, but now that I'm on a good 45 day streak of no PIO or porn use past glancing before I stop myself, I've been flatlining for roughly 35 days. It's awful.

I live with my girlfriend and have only been horny enough to have sex maybe 4 or 5 times. When I was a porn user I was horny enough every single day. It's been tough on our sex lives! I wish I knew when it would stop, or get better. It's extremely disheartening that I lose my sex drive but my urges haunt me every day.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. My girlfriend is EXTREMELY SUPPORTIVE and I would not have attempted or been successful with my streak without her honest and caring support.

Problems ejaculating during sex

I've been addicted for years now like a lot of other people here. Ever since I first had sex I found it difficult to ejaculate without using my own hand or just giving up. However even now after a week of no porn, I am still struggling to finish during sex. I'm sure this is an extremely common issue for other people but when should I start to be concerned for my own sexual wellbeing and consider seeing a doctor?
