WON: Sammy did not throw any punches. Andrade punched him and Sammy did not fight back. It was broken up immediately.

Meltzer says Andrade was waiting for him in the hallway and got two punches in before being broken up. Sammy did not punch anyone. Andrade was just sent home.

Bryan echoes and says that 4 out of the 5 people he talked to said that this happened.

Meltzer emphasizes 100% that Sammy did not throw the punches. He attributes Andrade's motive to his wanting to be fired.

Edit some more details:

- Meltzer says that the most pro-Andrade accounts he's heard are that Sammy said something to him before getting sucker punched by Andrade and that Sammy shoved Andrade after being spun around by Andrade.

- Andrade was warned when he came to work that getting in a fight with Sammy would not get him out of his contract. Andrade said he wouldn't do anything and then started something.

- Andrade was waiting for Sammy in the hallway. There were multiple witnesses. It was 2-3 punches before being broken up. Many, many witnesses.

- Meltzer says that these ex-WWE signings are severely backfiring because of all these people wanting to go back. He says they aren't many, maybe 3-4, but that they are locker room cancer.

When Jason Alexander read that script he thought it was ridiculous, so he went to Larry David to complain that this would never happen. When Larry told him that’s exactly what he did at SNL, that’s when Jason realized that George is Larry. He switched up how he played George from that moment on.

37

u/pyloros Oct 06 '22

So THAT'S why George gets more confident in later seasons. In the early seasons Jason Alexander played George more like a Woody Allen character.

“This may be a shot in the dark but...” -Andrade blinding punching in a room full of VPs after turning out the lights

429

u/TakkataMSF Oct 06 '22

Or he's going to get sidelined, off the air and out of public view, until his contract expires. That'll hurt his career. TK could also make him a jobber in dark matches (does AEW have dark matches?). Or put him in a bunch of squash matches.

Punching people to get fired is about the dumbest thing he could do because he's still under contract.

Not to mention, companies may not want to hire someone who got punchy.

I feel for TK. He tried something different and it's blowing up, in spectacular fashion, in his face. I want them to succeed because I want WWE to have some competition. It'd give fans a choice. But I am starting to worry!

409

u/BeefsteakBandit Oct 06 '22

If he's willing to punch a co-worker back stage to get out of his contract I sure wouldn't want to be the wrestler tasked with stepping in a ring with him to squash him in a dark match.

211

u/thor_odinsson08 CHAMPION SHIT! Oct 06 '22

That's why old school world champions are decent on shoot fights. It helps when other territories try to get sneaky and shoots on the champ.

With that said, Jake Hager and Anthony Ogogo can squash him. Those guys are lower on the card than him. So, losing to them would lower his stock. And I don't think Andrade can beat them in a real fight.

In the video, this is the path Bryan backs and I think he makes a good point. If Tony is sticks to his guns about not giving people their release he's going to be paying him regardless whether he sends him home or continues to use him. It's not ideal and could cause other people who want out to do the same thing but it is the lesser of two evils. I feel like Tony would be crazy to put this guy on TV or even YouTube in any capacity.

Andrade was also told that he wouldn’t be fired if he started a fight

The only thing I can glean from this is that people are aware that Andrade might try to start a fight and get his release from the company only so he can rock up elsewhere (you know where). Really curious about what else there is to this story, I genuinely don't know what the whole deal is here.

183

u/AFF8879 Oct 06 '22

As tight as HHH and Andrade might be, would WWE - a publicly traded company- really want to be seen hiring someone who intentionally started fights with coworkers in order to get out of his contract??

222

u/DevilCouldCry Scissor me Daddy Ass! Oct 06 '22

If I'm Triple H (and I'm not), I still wouldn't want to pick up Andrade. If this is how he tries to get himself kicked out of a job, then you'd have to worry he'd be willing to do the same again if he were unhappy in WWE. Not the kinda guy you want to keep around honestly, that's what you call locker room cancer.

Andrade was also told that he wouldn’t be fired if he started a fight

I think when you're at the point where you're telling someone he won't be fired if he starts a fight, then it's questionable why you'd want to keep him around. I know Khan doesn't want to make it seem like his contracts don't mean anything, but there is some point where its mutually beneficial for both parties to go their separate ways.

343

u/AdsBit Oct 06 '22

you fire one person for intentionally starting fights to get out of contracts you’ll have more people doing it

the best thing he can do is suspend him in definitely

159

u/DevilCouldCry Scissor me Daddy Ass! Oct 06 '22

Suspend him and keep him on the shelf until his contract runs out? Yeah, seems like that's probably the way to play it. If Andrade is locker room cancer and you don't want to set a precedent of 'start a fight = get released', then this is probably the only way to handle it. Unless of course, things can be worked out, but I just don't know if I see it happening.

Meltzer pointed out that Triple H's strategy of reaching out to wrestlers and telling them to try and get out of their contracts has been incredibly successful.

It certainly makes Tony Khan's anger over it seem a little more justified.

221

u/Purp1e_Aki Oct 06 '22

It also probably hints at just how personally it effected Haitch sat at home watching Vince run WWE and all of his stars into the ground. I remember HBK on an investor call sounding emotional about Aleister Black going to AEW as well.

I just don't get one thing really: if HHH wants a certain wrestler from AEW, why not offer to buy out his contract and a bit of money on top? Just like in sports. Seems like a win-win-win situation to me.

47

u/victoriabattenberg Oct 06 '22

Because I think Triple H wants both to sign the wrestlers and cause as much chaos in AEW as possible.

5

u/JHSisCIA Oct 06 '22

the answer is likely that the type of competition between AEW and WWE isn't the same type of competition that two sports teams have. Major pro sports leagues have massive revenue sharing agreements from merchandising and shared tv contracts which means that while the two teams are competing on the field, they aren't really competing with each other to make money. it doesn't really benefit the Seattle Mariners in any way to attempt to hurt the business of the New York Yankees in the same way that it might benefit WWE if AEW's locker room is in shambles.

IF this is Andrade trying to get fired and not just him hating Sammy, he's an idiot. He would have to be betting that he's so good and WWE will want to keep Charlotte happy that he can be completely out of control and assault his coworkers because he isn't getting his way and still expect that WWE will pick him back up and push him to wear his ego thinks he should be.

I say send him home, make him sit out, replace him on tv like they did last night until the AFO falls apart then just replace him on tv with way more Miro.

Even TK has morals.

28

u/FatMarkTechPriest Oct 06 '22 edited Oct 06 '22

I do not envy TK’s position right now. He can’t set a precedent by releasing Andrade, he can’t afford a locker room beef right now, he has no EVPs for talent, he’s negotiating with WBD, his locker room leaking more than a broken faucet, and Hunter playing WCW/Attitude Era cutthroat tactics right now.

He needs to take “TK the Friend” and ice it for the foreseeable future. TK the Boss needs to be on the driver’s seat and give those he placed in-charge of Talent Relations, in the interim, actual power to smack down his locker room, especially enforcing restraint regarding socmed.

Andrade was told he wouldn’t be fired if he started a fight

And he took that as a challenge

Andrade: "Estoy cansado, estoy viejo, y trabajo junto a unos niños"

422

u/Radiant-Ad-109 Oct 06 '22

For people wondering why the reaction is different between the Punk situation and this one, fairly simply it's because the fairly litigious highest paid (probably) star of the company, and several members of AEW management having an altercation entirely could change the direction of the company and their relationship with any prospective TV network or advertiser they deal with. They cannot afford to get that one wrong.

Andrade wanting to get fired in a hallway isn't the same situation at all.

Is AEW being inconsistent? Of course, but the stakes are entirely different.

170

u/klebanonnn Your Text Here Oct 06 '22

Thank you. Discovery is watching what TK does with Punk and The Elite. They're not watching what happens to Sammy and Andrade. Punk and the Elite's status affects all of AEW's business. The other two, not so much.

Never meet your heroes is a phrase for a reason

20

u/frasierfonzie Oct 06 '22

It should really be amended to "never read dirt sheets about your heroes, and you probably shouldn't follow them on social media either"

10

u/Kolby_Jack Oct 06 '22

Not to mention another day of waking up to find the narrative of a backstage story completely flipped. Yesterday I read (okay, skimmed) dozens of comments trashing Sammy and accusing TK of "playing favorites" by punishing Andrade and letting Sammy main event and go over.

Now today we learn that Sammy threw no punches and Andrade is a fucking baby. At this point we should just default to assuming the first reports of backstage drama are only about 30% true and just wait for a more thorough report. Of course, that won't actually happen.

6

u/IsD_ Oct 06 '22

This is why people hear about these backstage issues, arguments, Twitter drama and so desperately try to convince themselves they're works or can be turned into the works, because the alternative is that their favorites are immature drama magnets

Even if Andrade wanted to leave and go to WWE. Should WWE hire someone who just got fired elsewhere for attacking an employee?

Also, comparing it to the Elite situation is weird as the Elite are EVPs and went to Punks dressing room with a lot of initially conflicting information. There needed to be a full investigation to that for all parties as it wasn't just some employees / contractors going at it.

312

u/SeanTCU PROGRESS Oct 06 '22

If nothing else, Andrade is giving WWE every excuse to lowball the shit out of their contract offer to him by burning his bridge with their only competition.

Honestly, almost everything WWE could get from Andrade, in terms of market, they can get from pushing Escobar (even if he's a few years older) without any of the mess.

They'll probably still bring him back because of Charlotte, but it's going to be unnecessarily begging for trouble, considering he wasn't even happy with his time in NXT before.

45

u/DevilCouldCry Scissor me Daddy Ass! Oct 06 '22

They've got talent like Angel Garza, Humberto Carillo (both of which are finding their groove), Raul Mendoza, and Santos Escobar that are all supremely talented. I honestly don't at all think they need to pick up Andrade. And with the backstage drama being what it is, it isn't worth it.

Of course they shouldn't, and they dont need that level of petulance. However, he's married to Charlotte, so he will get a job.

This is certainly a very different situation from the one that a lot of people on this sub were assuming happened last night.

The answer to "why was Sammy not sent home" seems to be "because he was attacked by his co worker".

You should never mouth off about your co workers on twitter or anywhere else, but attacking your colleague is a different level of unprofessional if we take this report at face value, which is a fairly big IF.

Looking in from the outside it does look like a lot of the ex WWE talent that AEW has brought in has been a negative for the promotion.

The ideal solution would be to find away to get them out of the locker room that doesn't reward this sort of behaviour and doesn't send the message that "if you want our of your contract, act as unprofessionally as possible and you'll get what you want".

Depending on what contracts allow, a decent length suspension without pay is probably the only thing you can do before eventually negotiating a release.

I mean even today someone in the other thread was like “HOW IS THIS GUY INVOLVED IN 2 FIGHTS AND STILL NOT SUSPENDED” literally ignoring the fact that he also didn’t fight Eddie either and got hit by him as well. He’s an arsehole who rubs people the wrong way clearly, but you just can’t punish a victim in a situation.

The simple solution here is let anyone who wants out of their contract out of their contact. The only catch, they have to buy their way out. 50 cents on the dollar. So if you have a three million dollar contract it will cost you $1.5 million to get out. And let WWE if they want these guys bad enough pay for it. Then for AEW they get rid of someone who doesn't want to be there and at least AEW makes something off of the deal.

I think Sammy Guevera is a clown, but this is entirely on Andrade. You can't just assault people at work.

AEW is just a total mess right now. Tony needs to nut up and start letting guys go. As much as I like Andrade, he's not a game changer for the company. Him going back to WWE doesn't effect AEW at all.

121

u/Sertorius777 Oct 06 '22

It's a tricky issue. Like what if anyone who wants to jump ship before their contract is up just starts throwing fists backstage knowing that it's a surefire way to get your freedom?

These guys have signed contracts and should be held to them, seeing as how AEW has never released anyone without good reason.

Tony lets Andrade go and he sets a precedent that if you want out just become a liability. Keep him out off tv for the remainder of his contract. Make him a ghost for however long he has left. Hell bring in all the Ingo guys and let Rush who's actually playing nice be the leader.

Giving Andrade exactly what he wants is the worst thing he could do. That would be rewarding this sort of behaviour and setting a terrible precedent for others to follow in future.

Meltzer says that these ex-WWE signings are severely backfiring because of all these people wanting to go back. He says they aren't many, maybe 3-4, but that they are locker room cancer.

AEW has lost its identity since that huge wave of WWE signings came in. Honestly, it's best for everyone if they're allowed to leave. They don't want to be there and they're toxic to the lockerroom. Let your homegrown talent step up and reclaim the spotlight, TK.

People got mad about Kenny supposedly saying he wouldn't have signed people, but he's on the money
