Health/Medical Roe v Wade leaked SCOTUS opinion MEGATHREAD

90% of the frontpage is this discussion, would prefer to have it somewhere central rather than asked in a slightly different way.

This topic is easily one of the most sensitive topics to discuss so please engage politely with each other and report anyone engaging in an uncivil manner, we will deal with it fairly quickly.

Meta Ignorance of the rules is not a defense - Telling a user a method to commit suicide will result in a permanent ban.

Edit: this is not up for debate

Your job before using a Subreddit is to be familiar with the rules to ensure you do not end up having your content removed (mild) to being on the receiving end of a ban (severe).

Given the nature of the offense, this type of infraction is not liable for a warning nor is it liable to the defense of “but I didn’t know!”

This stance has zero to do with personal belief regarding assisted-suicide, which would imply the use of a medical provider operating within evidence-based approaches to help with end-of-life. This stance is in regards to largely uninformed Redditors, of unverifiable credentials, offering “advice” with methodology that is not evidence-based nor generally is it without risk.

Were medically-assisted suicide pan-legal across every single State, it would still not be allowed for users to give methods to others on how to kill themselves.

Your individual beliefs have nothing to do with this discussion, has nothing to do with adhering to rules in order to participate within a sub and further has no bearing on your ability to support medically-assisted suicide, of which a Reddit comment is not, across various discussions.

However, If you tell a user a method to kill themselves, you will be banned and your comment will be escalated for additional review by Reddit admins.

You should know better than to provide someone potentially suicidal with methods to kill themselves, and if you can’t have that inherent moral compass then you should be able to gander at the multiple places our rules are plastered before engaging within this sub.

Thanks to the rest of you with enough common sense that this message will seem ridiculous, keep on keeping on.

Health/Medical Why do gay guys sound gay?

2.6k Upvotes

I know, i know, its a stereotype and alot of the time you wouldn't be able to tell if a fella was gay just by speaking to him but it certainly exists in most gay chaps ive ever met.

Is it a biological thing perhaps? Is it an act or persona?

They also tend to speak really fast, whats that about?

Habits & Lifestyle How does an artist like Lizzo workout and perform as much as she does but doesn’t lose weight?

I love lizzo and do not come from a place of fat phobia or anything. I have had a high metabolism all my life so I don’t understand how weight loss works. I envy how she can move and dance so well. I just know how much cardio that has to be and don’t understand how someone doing so much doesn’t lose weight super fast.

Ethics & Morality Why do mass shooters target elementary schools?

Obviously they’re mentally deranged and want to hurt people, but why little kids? Can anyone explain the logic?

For example, someone who shoots up his own high school is often motivated by a desire to hurt people he knows. Someone who targets a gathering place of a certain race is motivated by racism. Do the men who commit massacres at elementary schools have disproportionate hate for young children? Do they think they’ll have an easier time there with targets who can’t defend themselves? Is there some other reason? If someone could illuminate the thinking I’d be interested to hear.

Edit: Also, as a related question, if someone is that miserable why don’t they just kill themselves?

Culture & Society I am from South Asia. I live in a poor country. Our leaders are tyrants and we have very little. Despite the unimaginable sorrows of our people, no one would ever imagine in their wildest dream storming into a school and killing small children. Why do so many Americans shoot up schools?

Mental Health Why do people romanticise mental illness so much on TikTok?

1.2k Upvotes

I’ve been housebound for six years because of mental illness. Seeing people on TikTok saying they have it too, but having their hair and makeup done perfectly while recording themselves making jokes about it, makes me feel really uncomfortable. It’s like they’re happy to have it and show it off like a badge of honour. I might be wrong and this could be a form of gatekeeping, but it just feels weird to me.

Edit: I don’t think mentally ill people are incapable of good hygiene and making themselves look nice. It’s that combined with people recording themselves with the perfect lighting, angles, and filters while dancing behind a caption similar to “was just about to unalive myself but my note turned into a silly poem and I changed my mind 🤪😭”

Culture & Society Why don’t women do mass shootings despite having access to guns?

It seems like every single mass shooting is done by a male. Women have just as much access to military style weaponry yet don’t do mass shootings. What gives?

Love & Dating Am I, a 21-year-old male, weird for dating an 18-year-old female (who was just under 18 when we first met)?

We met online a couple months before she turned 18. We ended up meeting in real life a couple months after she turned 18. I am 21, in my first year of university. She is 18, just graduated HS and about to start university.

A couple of my close friends know but I have not told most people because I feel like this is a taboo thing. For extra context, we are in Europe where the drinking age is 18 (personally I think the drinking age of 21 in America is weirdly high, as is the general consensus in Europe).

The age of consent where we live is 16, but even if it was 18 that would be fine because like I said, we didn't actually meet until after she turned 18 (although we clearly knew we liked each other when she was a month or two away from 18). I am not worried about the legality because I know for a fact there are no legal issues here, I am worried about the ethics of it in the eyes of society.

Do you think I will I be seen as a creep by most people? Some people? Hardly any people? Just looking to get some opinions here.

Current Events Are these insanely recurrent mass shootings hinting towards a problem that needs to be solved and are we too arrogant to acknowledge that there is a problem?

What drives a person as young as 18 to build so much rage and hate against the world that he needs to take it out on children. If it was one weird kid going rogue or two weird kids we'd understand. But no way all of these shooters are that. I believe there's a problem much bigger and deeper in our society that we're ignoring and until it is solved these shootings will keep happening.

It's not about just the gun control, it could be something we need to fix in our human nature that spreads in our society.

So we are Indian and invited to a black cookout, friends of my teenage son. Can I bring samosas? I don’t know what to take? Also any etiquette I should know?

Politics If you don't believe on implementing gun control in the US, what is your solution to prevent more mass shootings?

I don't assume that anyone on either side wants to shrug and accept this as normal. I know there are some who are adamant that we need gun reform, but those who vehemently resist that idea, but I would like to know what the latter group feels needs to happen to help this issue.

Current Events Why is it that nearly EVERYONE is bullied but only a very specific demographic of people (YOUNG MEN) are shooting up public places? And let's be real here, practically 90% of the men are white. Let's figure this out, what problem do white men have that they think they can solve with mass shhotings?

I was heavily bullied and socially ostracized growing up, abused and neglected in the home and I basically grew up learning that I am unlovable. My therapy bills suck ass, I'm emotionally stunted, and I have an avoidant personality--but fuck I haven't tried to shoot anyone up!!! I refuse to believe these guys are doing what they're doing because of bullying. I go through racism, misogyny, and homophobia on a daily basis and I still have managed not to kill folks. SO many children get bullied who manage to go through life without killing people en masse.

What's going on? Are they being radicalized? Are they getting ideas from the news of other mass shooters? Are they crying for help? Looking for attention? What is creating all these killer white guys?! How is it that so many people who have it worse don't kill en masse?

Mental Health Is there any way to get rid of depression without therapy or meds?

Lately I have been struggling a lot with my depression. I used to be in therapy when I was younger but am no longer in a position where I can afford it or have the time. Is there any alternative solution that is safe I could use to help treat it?

Culture & Society Is it weird, as a man, to want children, but not want a spouse/partner?

I have always loved being around kids and originally started off being a teacher before engineering. I have always seen myself adopting, but have not always seen myself being married or in a relationship. Is this weird? I make more than enough to raise multiple kids so I don’t see why I would be turned down for adoption, but don’t want to be made a fool when I try to adopt as a single male.

Other Why do people censor other people's names when sharing a screenshot of something they publicly posted on social media?

If someone posts something online on an account that has their real name tied to it, then makes it public for all to see, then they're aware that their post can be seen by pretty much everyone on the Internet and have therefore already consented to it.

So why are people always censoring the poster's name when sharing a screenshot of something they posted? Some subreddits even require you to censor the name, otherwise they'll delete your entire post. Why is this?

Law & Government Who actually has the power to make change in the US?

In Biden's speech he is saying things like

"Why do we keep letting this happen? Why are we willing to live with this carnage?"

and

"The idea that an 18-year-old kid can walk into a gun store and buy two assault weapons — it's just wrong, What in God's name do you need an assault weapon for, except to kill someone?"

So why isn't he doing anything about it? Didn't the people on the left vote this man in to do things about this?

I assume he would have to propose a law and it has to get signed off or something, but surely as the POTUS he has some weight to get it done?
