You have to pay to wear jeans on Friday. Good news: the money goes to the United Way. Bad news, it makes the company look magnanimous when really it’s the underpaid employees who contribute.

16

u/O_o-22 Jan 27 '22

I’m pretty sure the place I do contract work for does this. Every Friday you can wear jeans IF you pay $2 the Ronald Macdonald house. Luckily I’m exempt cause they also have the employees wear awful Hawaiian shirts when the weathers nice.

4

u/WoofMeow2 Jan 27 '22

Lol sounds familiar 😆 there's also that person that goes around collecting money to use towards lottery tickets.. everytime there's a large pot, we are expected to pitch in.. and so we all giggle and dream about becoming millionares so we don't ever have to work another shit job 🥸

3

u/O_o-22 Jan 27 '22

Yeah I think I’ve seen a story before about a work lottery pool that once the money was divvied up no one actually got enough to retire off it. How annoying to be able to say “I’m a lottery winner” just to still be stuck working.

2

u/No-Lobster1692 Jan 27 '22

Sounds really familiar

I would unsub, but the drama here is better than Katy Perry kisses.

43

u/Susannah92 Jan 27 '22

I literally cannot believe that the Mods would trade such an important movement for cheap drama. This shirt hurts.

15

u/Legitimate-Produce-1 Jan 27 '22

This is what the goons at Fox News wanted.

Make a laughing stock of movement by isolating the exact target that would present badly. Fracturing the movement is totally icing on the cake of divide and conquer.

8

u/Susannah92 Jan 27 '22

It's like the Mods spread their cheeks, asked how deep Fox News wanted to stick it in, and Fox only said "Yes".

Idk if we're fractured (yet) but it's gonna take months to recover from this debacle in the public eye, and victory will never be as clean cut as it would've been before. The Mods made the one mistake they could not afford to make.

They sold us out like... our employers have been doing for, like, ever.

Like our bosses, when the blacked out Christmas for Vacation so they could take one.

Like the time Mia took our horrible idea up the ladder and presented as his own.

Like the time Ben found out our reddit info and DOXd us.

Worst Part- They don't even understand what they did because they work 30 hours a week... or are "Long Term" unemployed. They are part of the system.

24

u/Lobstery_boi (edit this) Jan 27 '22

My thoughts exactly. Yes, we need new mods and we need better representation. Absolutely, under no circumstance, should we all be represented in news interviews by any of the current mods. Why even do news interviews in the first place? This sub gets plenty of buzz and has built a great deal of class consciousness across the workers of the country and the world. It helped me to understand the value of solidarity among coworkers, and has influenced worker culture to change to the point that more people see that standing up to the bosses and having self-respect as a worker is not only possible, but preferred.

Solidarity means we stick together. The sub doesn't need and will never need news exposure, it just needs all of us, as a community, giving one another the good advice and support that we all need to improve our conditions.

3

u/FirstPlebian Jan 27 '22

The only press we need is when they report on stuff we do, like helping Kelloggs workers in their strike. Forget interviews with any msm let alone the devil itself Fox News.

3

u/Penguin335 Jan 27 '22

Yes, this. I'm going no where and if the right think they've won, they fucking haven't.

2

u/FirstPlebian Jan 27 '22

Yeah, also I would be suspicious about the authenticity of posts saying they are unsubscribing, that's like textbook influence agent stuff, not saying it is the case in any particular case, but these Koch funded groups and their ilk no doubt pay agencies to have their accounts post stuff like that.

We have near 2 million people networked, we shouldn't let one moderator and Fox News destroy that. The moderators don't make the sub we do.

2

u/9C_c_combo Jan 27 '22

They're likely right. Most people here don't actually have a commitment to anything let alone an entire movement.

Same here. I’m sticking around till the end of the week to watch the shit show but this sub has been irreversibly damaged. By the initial mods actions and the other mods absolutely terrible response. Get lost you mod losers working for free in an anti work sub.

37

u/Lovely_Louise Jan 27 '22

Yeah, this is pretty harsh. I'm starting to think we need to make smaller subs for the different alignments, and form like a coalition/union of subreddits lol. It'll be easier to find representatives to speak on the behalves of each group if they all agree on a POV, and pick a reasonable person. From there we can all try to find common ground for what to push for. As much as I support the ideals seen here often, seeing this series of blunders has really made this whole thing seem like a bit of a joke

Just like Occupy Wall Street and Defund the Police, antiworks concept, the heart of it is correct. We know we’re right. There’s no question this movement is correct. It’s the squishing from the outside and the infighting on the inside that can undo an otherwise just cause. I hope people redirect their rightful anger towards a more organized movement that is insulated from squishing from the inside or out. Organized by people that know how to organize. It needs a slam bang PR campaign and organizing is always hard when taking hits from all sides. At the end of the day we are right and we know it. We all need to decide where to take our rightful outrage and keep our focus.

I'm curious why you joined a sub created by anarchists, and then think that because more people joined the sub who aren't anarchists, that those people, such as yourself, get to tell the anarchists that they no longer can manage the space they created and others be must be chosen by people who joined the sub, to run the sub.

32

u/iwishihadalawnmower Jan 27 '22

Seriously tho, what do you think is the best process to determines who should be mod?

I thought their role was only to delete reposts and racist comments, not to do unprepared interviews for right-wing propaganda machines. Did I miss something on the about page?

0

u/-losing-patience- Jan 27 '22

Actually the process we're going through right now is probably pretty good. Mods actions have been roundly criticized by the community, result - one mod has been removed, remaining mods are going through a learning process and have improved their communication with the subscribers. Good enough.

Because what makes this sub is the content created by the 1.7M of us, not the moderation of a few.

Isn't "but I started it" literally the exact excuse the capitalist owners use to justify why they get riches while everyone else gets starvation wages?

2

u/Ok-Cat8790 Jan 27 '22

You're being duped into "overthrowing" a space so that bad actors can infiltrate and undermine it.

Isn’t “well, we’re all here now so I guess this belongs to us” the exact excuse colonizers use to justify why they can just take space and resources from established communities?

3

u/iwishihadalawnmower Jan 27 '22

If this is a sub to empower workers, then the ones who do the majority of the actual work on this sub - the content creators - should have the power to determine the direction of the sub.

If this was just supposed to be a circle jerk for small private group that wanted to do more harm than good to the labor movement, then they should have put something saying so on the about page before 1.7M of us started sharing stories and building community here. Most of us would never have joined.

The community that is established here is overwhelmingly speaking out against an abuse of power by the mods.

Also I didn't always agree with antiwork name for this sub. I want to work. Just not in a toxic or abusive environment.

2

u/Faisal726 Jan 27 '22

That's the problem with the reddit hivemind mentality. We're all different. In some ways we can relate, but no one is exactly the same and here for the exact same reason. That's impossible.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '22

Exactly. The sub was partly really and truly anti work for some time which is why i got interested in it. There's so much more to life than work. But as the time went on there was a lot of workers who liked the idea of unionising that became subscribers and the general tone of the sub changed.

I guess what we're seeing now is simply a clash against two wills. Those of us who are anti work and the pro work people who want unions.

It's never a good idea to make this many people come together, with such a mixed bag of ideas and i hope this sub will live on and the pro work people will start their own sub.

No it isn’t. Notice how fox isn’t even gloating about this in their culture war stuff. This was a fly hitting their windshield.

34

u/Nakoichi Communist with raccoon characteristics Jan 27 '22 edited Jan 27 '22

People need to recognize two things, that hatchet job of an interview (yes the interviewee did poorly but that's besides the point Fox is the predatory one here they were just naive).

That naivete is the actual problem here. The anti-tankie hysteria (and I say this as an anarchist) was an obvious op. Sowing sectarian infighting is like page one of the fed playbook whether the people doing it know this or not.

People need to actually like, read theory. Poor Alabama sharecroppers in the 30s read Lenin's What Is To Be Done? and used it as a guide to organizing:

I wasn’t prepared for characters such as Lemon Johnson, a former member of the Communist-led Share Croppers Union. In December 1986, I visited Johnson at his home in rural Montgomery County, which I described in my journal as “a tiny, run-down shack with battered wooden walls, a rusted tin roof that had begun to cave in, and a porch stocked with three rickety chairs.” He fed me a huge lunch of collard greens, beans, Wonder Bread, fried chicken, and a slice of cake. We ate outside and talked for a while; when it became unbearably cold, we moved inside. I sat on his bed as he slouched in a wooden chair next to me. A faded picture of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was tacked to the wall above his head. He told me stories about the 1935 cotton pickers’ strike, Stalin’s pledge to send troops to Mobile to help black sharecroppers if things got out of hand, and the night a well-armed group of women set out to avenge their comrades who had been beaten or killed during the strike. When I asked Mr. Johnson how the union succeeded in winning some of their demands, without the slightest hesitation he reached into the drawer of his nightstand and pulled out a dog-eared copy of V. I. Lenin’s What Is to Be Done and a box of shotgun shells, set both firmly on the bed next to me, and said, “Right thar, theory and practice. That’s how we did it. Theory and practice.“ ”

u/HOTTAKECO-OP Jan 27 '22

Absolutely based

18

u/Nakoichi Communist with raccoon characteristics Jan 27 '22

The biggest middle finger this sub could give to the reddit admins and the capitalists is to become an explicit left unity organizing space. It will probably get banned for some bullshit if it does but THAT is what threatens power. Not a bunch of people telling stories about their jobs sucking. I empathize with all of those but I've been in retail for almost twenty years, without real revolutionary organizing this space is just a blowoff valve for alienation under capitalism.

5

u/thegrandlvlr Jan 27 '22

-2

u/Deggit Jan 27 '22

the object lesson of this entire fiasco is that Leftists should stop imagining that it takes powerful interests conspiring behind the scenes to implode the credibility of their organizations

Also they should stop calling this a "movement" or an "organization" as I just did. it's merely an online bulletin board, mostly full of complaining. No actual organizing work went on apart from a few attempts to sticky union news to the top of the sub. The sub had no official liaison to any union or any other labor organization, either in the US or internationally.

3

u/ConnectPanda4618 Jan 27 '22

What's the alternative then?

→ More replies

3

u/Ok_Independent9119 Jan 27 '22

You're not wrong, this is at the moment, just a bulletin board. It is a lot of complaining, a lot of venting, likely some made up stories. It isn't a movement, at least not because of this sub.

It can get closer to that, if people work towards that. It's gotten people together with similar interests, the next step is up to them if they decide to take it. I'm not an idealist who thinks reddit and its users are a force that's going to topple capitalism and bring us to the utopia, but I do think it can help people who are looking at their situation and thinking "maybe I should talk about my salary with my peers" or "maybe a union isn't a bad thing like I've been conditioned to believe". That's a good first step, so we'll see where it goes after that.

2

u/King_of_the_light Jan 27 '22

So far, hardly any management has been necessary on this sub.
It's not as if this is an organised movement. So I don't really understand why there is so much anger towards the moderators.

Only now is something like this necessary. It is to be expected that things will go wrong at the beginning until good organisers/speakers/moderators have established themselves.

In any case, I'm curious to see if this sub remains a collection of complaints about working conditions or if it develops into a movement.

2

u/AndForeverNow Jan 27 '22

But what about the store policies that management must follow?

see you tomorrow tho :/

2

u/alicat707 Jan 27 '22

Same here. I am officially embarrassed that I am part of this sub. I am 50 years old, at the moment I work over 50 hours a week, with no overtime pay and no benefits. I thought this sub was for standing up for workers rights in conditions such as I mentioned. If that is not what this sub is about, my bad. Either way, I'll get my popcorn and watch the shit show for a bit, then I'm out.

2

u/Successful_Present39 Jan 27 '22

If you unsubscribe how will the mods get paid? Oh wait….

2

u/reclusiveronin Jan 27 '22

Before you do, send in your tps reports with the cover sheet.

2

u/masaimos Jan 27 '22

we built it to 1.7 milliion ....it will only grow further... do your worst... brigade as hard as you can. We are many, ye are few!!
keep trying the FUD and metadrama and whining about mods. It only makes us stronger

2

u/Unlikely_Nothing6132 Jan 27 '22

Wait, so this is your official two weeks notice? So can you still come in tomorrow?

2

u/0ber0n_Ken0bi here for the memes Jan 27 '22

But there are Hot-N-Readies en route.

What's your favorite soda? I bet we picked it up...

::turns around and wordlessly drifts back to his desk::

2

u/GreenDuckz1 Jan 27 '22

Did you run this by the mods? Notice denied

2

u/RestingBitchFace1980 here for the memes Jan 27 '22

Not picking up the slack for free, friend-o

2

u/candycrushmonster Jan 27 '22

I’m gonna reject your notice. Need you to come in on Saturday, pal.

2

u/Protoetype Jan 27 '22

It's a free sub to browse. You want a movement? Go make one of yourself and do all the work necessary. This sub doesn't owe you shit. Stop looking for a great leader and guild yourself. BE THE CHANGE YOU WANT TO SEE.

Thank you Antiwork for offering us all so much insight. FOR FREE. People are embarrassed and butthurt and it's funny, anyone who fights for what's right gets embarrassed all the time and they keep going. THAT'S HOW IT IS. Welcome to activism.

2

u/DirtyPenPalDoug Jan 27 '22

And people think that interview was cringe.. They haven't seen this post

2

u/this_what_she_said Jan 27 '22

We’ll make a new sub with blackjack and hookers!

2

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '22

Nobody gives a shit, If you wanna unsub then unsub why you posting here? Cuz you just wanna karma whore?

2

u/thechipmunk09 Jan 27 '22

It’s incredibly rude to quit without a two weeks notice, don’t you realize the tough situation you put on us? Don’t expect us to be a reference when applying for future jobs.

2

u/4kray Jan 27 '22

Lol peace out. Who tf cares.

Keep posting about bad working conditions and how we can go about improving them.

And spread the idea that survival shouldn’t depend on working

2

u/teambob Jan 27 '22

Well I can't post anyway

2

u/AbuMaxwell Jan 27 '22

I tried to post regarding the fact that Tim Pool is covering AntiWork and it says I have to request approval to post.

WHAT THE FUCK?

Yeah, I'm leaving.

The mod community - Beware that, when fighting monsters, you yourself do not become a monster.

2

u/watches_the_world Jan 27 '22

Hey me too, came here to say just this. Thanks for shoeing me what a bunch of disrespectful cunts you really are. I'm embarrassed to have ever been a part of this place.

2

u/el8v lazy and proud Jan 27 '22

Don't go. We will order pizzas for everyone. And a ping pong table.

2

u/Famous_Feeling5721 Jan 27 '22

You’ve commented 72 days ago on Lego at Walmart and have just made this post. This is the extent of your involvement on Reddit. Who are you?

2

u/chattiepatti Jan 27 '22

Be careful, they will file for an injunction to prevent you from leaving

2

u/bristlez Jan 27 '22

The views held by the people in control of this sub are not mine, I'm gone too. Goodluck everyone.

2

u/neobyte999 Jan 27 '22

I know OP personally. He 100% works for Big Shill.

9

u/Kaidu313 Jan 27 '22

You are not alone

4

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '22

This isn't an airport. You don't need to announce your departure.

u/MrBulldops94 at work Jan 27 '22

"Okay, that was always allowed!"

3

u/LordsMail Jan 27 '22

Felicia dishonors her house by announcing her departure.

3

u/lickneonlights Jan 27 '22

It’s “I fired r/antiwork as my favourite anti-work subreddit”, not “I quit”, antiwork 101 smh /s

3

u/WillBigly Jan 27 '22

Movement of millions don't give a shit about 1 person who was sent by the powers that be to infiltrate and destroy from inside. This isn't about an interview...our problems are so much bigger

2

u/GamerGodPWNDU Jan 27 '22

Ok, good one! See you Monday pal .... not but seriously, change only happens through action and determination. You lose all influence on bettering the sub by just unsubscribing.

2

u/SankaraSlapChop Jan 27 '22

nobody wants to post anymore

2

u/Wolfgang_Pelz Jan 27 '22

I'm only staying to witness the fall, I should probably watch that interview if it was so bad

u/ahtasva Jan 27 '22

I see the number of members has gone up by a couple of hundred thousand since the interview dropped. Must be the bourgeoisie coming to watch the proletariat maul each other over the shit show. I am a supporter of this sub. I think the members on here should create an open letter that clearly states mod are not representative of the movement. They have no authority to speak on its behalf. If the express an opinion, it’s their own.

2

u/Jayandnightasmr Jan 27 '22

Yeah the number of people who have magically appeared is pretty funny, like this is the OPs first interaction with the sub, and I'm seeing dozens of day old accounts commenting

1

u/WayNext6583 Jan 27 '22

Ok officer

1

u/TheWizofNewYork I guess I’ll just go back to work then. Jan 27 '22

At this point I am only staying to watch the shit show.

1

u/ImTheWrongGuy Jan 27 '22

I’m unsubscribing after I post this comment.

Keep up the real fight my friends, and remember…

Don’t let the man keep you down. Damn the man, save the empire!

1

u/cripes1702 Jan 27 '22

The irony

1

u/Joeyjoejoejr0 Jan 27 '22

Yeah, me too. I’m out

1

u/SergioSF Jan 27 '22

Protip: If you refresh the screen, you'll most likely see the amount of subs slowly twinkling down.

1

u/VALUEZER0 Jan 27 '22

Byeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Get a fucking job!

1

u/nintendorks0401 Jan 27 '22

R/work reform. Go there.

1

u/Its_OK_to_Not_Be_OK_ Jan 27 '22

Well clearly the next step for r/antiwork is to sue whatever sub you wind up in for loss of employees.

1

u/Iam__andiknowit Jan 27 '22

I WANT SPEAK TO THE MANGER! @Kraen

It is internet. No one cares about management.

People that mad at mods are dumb. They demand mods to be this and that. In fucking internet.

Those people are the so detached from reality, that seeing in mass so many people who demand the fucking manager in the internet IS the immense damage for the community and everything that those people represent.

-11

u/oddpho Jan 27 '22

bullshit. stop this whining. antiwork was never about PR. Lots of us are stuck in a dystopia and mumble awkwardly when the nazi machine patronises us

7

u/CHRISKOSS Jan 27 '22

It looks like the mods intend to continue putting people with little to no work experience in roles as media spokespeople to advocate for labor rights. Do they not understand how bad the optics are on this?

It seems like they are doubling down in the same poor judgement that led to yesterday's PR disaster. I'm seriously concerned this sub is heading in the direction of being a net harm to progress.

1

u/oddpho Jan 27 '22

this is never going to be won in the media .. bezos and murdoch own that. stop the brigading and distraction FUD
