Can we get a "Meet the mod team" to see if there are any more surprises we should know about?

The problem with a "Meet the mod team" is that it inherently elevates the mods to a position of importance by suggesting they are people who should be met.

It feeds right back into the self-important arrogance that resulted in this whole situation in the first place.

We need a full replacement of the current mod team - they simply don't have the respect to operate effectively, and they're too self-important to recognize that and step aside.

u/SongOfAshley Jan 27 '22

Moderators and spokespersons should not be the same job. Think about representation, and the need for checks and balances. You don't want a cop, a lawyer, and a judge be the same person, for example.

67

u/thehobbyqueer Jan 27 '22

Yep. Too bad cops didn't get that memo...

30

u/SongOfAshley Jan 27 '22

That's the example I used when talking about the presidential election... Like, the executive branch isn't even supposed to be making decisions and new laws. We've fully lost sight of the functions of that office, the election is a circus

2

u/myname_isnot_kyal Jan 28 '22

judge, jury, and executioner

2

u/Wang_Tsung Jan 28 '22

He's not judge judy and executioner!

8

u/lumberm0uth Jan 27 '22

It works for Judge Dredd!

8

u/Stevemacdev Jan 27 '22

Dredd was also an executioner. Like that interview yesterday.

2

u/taintedcake Jan 28 '22 edited Jan 28 '22

Exactly. At work when it's time for my team to give a summary in meetings it's not the guy that oversees the team as a whole presenting it. It's us, the people on the team doing the work presenting the summary because we're the ones that actually know the shit.

If they wanted an interview from this sub, there should've been a megathread for at least a week before the interview that allowed everyone to express their thoughts and therefore collectively give answers.

I actually really love my job too. I thought the whole point of this sub was "don't get worked to death for 25% of your worth," but that fucking idiot in the interview made it seem like this sub is just "i wanna work very little and still be able to have what I want"

A spokesperson should be heavily moderated.

u/Razur Jan 27 '22

There seems to be a bit of hang-up on the word "meet".

Just a post about who the moderation team is would be helpful. Force the mods to make their bios as comments instead of having it in the actual post, then invite members of the community to post their own bios as well. This way, the mods' bios are among the community bios and they're not elevated above the community.

To make the mod bios easy to find though, the post should link to them in the comments. But this way people can talk to specific mods and the mods might be able to find good canidates to add to their mod team too.

16

u/Mrteamtacticala Jan 27 '22

Should rotate mods out regularly. They should only be "moderating" the sub, you know, making sure spammy crap gets shut down. Nothing beyond that. Why is it that the term"moderator" has turned into some weird power figure as opposed to, you know...a moderator.

14

u/Haulie Jan 27 '22

Why is it that the term"moderator" has turned into some weird power figure as opposed to, you know...a moderator.

Because it is a job that is basically designed to be abused. Very few people who make a genuinely good mod have the time or inclination to do it, so it is a job that is left to be done by the kind of people who actually want to moderate an internet forum, and they tend to be a certain... type.

That's not to say that 100% of mods are bad, but Eric Cartman "Respect my authoritah" types are absolutely drawn to it.

7

u/Anticreativity Jan 27 '22

They're all tainted. Not because they're all bad people, but the fact that they haven't all come forward, agreed to step down and implement a democratic process to pick new mods and the scope of mod authority shows that they are not fit. This happens all the time in the public realm. After a scandal people will resign, not because they themselves necessarily did anything wrong, but in order to remove as much doubt and suspicion as possible due to their proximity to the scandal.

Everyone who was a mod before yesterday needs to begin the process of appointing a new team and fully remove themselves as soon as possible in order to maintain a shred of credibility. The fact that they're still trying to cling to their authority shows that they have none.

13

u/Thatwasmint Jan 27 '22

Yeah maybe if they ever had jobs they would understand PR and interpersonal skills a little better

5

u/randomlywaitingtodie Jan 27 '22

What if we just berate them during the meet the mod team? Like for ffs the rest of us are to busy working to be mods...

3

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '22

Their only purpose is to hold a small number of tools that not everyone should have. If it was deleting number values that broke community rules, instead of content that did, you could automate it in an afternoon. That's how important mods are. They are literally ONLY here because we don't have impartial robots to replace them. Or like.. an apathetic sociopath who's being forced to do it as community service.

If you can log on to the website and fucking read then congratulations you're halfway there to being a mod, don't diddle any kids or suck off any Fox execs on your way to pick up your hot-air-in-a-can.

Imagine ruling a sandbox in a desert, with everyone else's much larger and very real buildings in plain sight, and then thinking yourself mighty for the ability to curate your sandbox.

1

u/Haulie Jan 28 '22

Yeah, no lies detected.

2

u/ColonelWKurtz Jan 27 '22

I would agree with you in every other instance but this time it’s different. I want to know who these Mods are that seem to “care” so much about the people and community. Smh

2

u/DeusExMachina222 Jan 27 '22

However, it does appear that they have viewe/positioned themselves as some kind of leadership. (Electing a representative to be interviewed without informing the others, declaring a protest was canceled)

I just wonder if perhaps the mods can chiefly serve to simply act as moderator (ala debate moderator style)

Just some dry shower thoughts

4

u/Haulie Jan 27 '22

That's not incompatible with what I said. There have to be mods, absolutely, but the scope of their influence needs to be limited to the essentially janitorial aspects of... moderation. They're not spox, and they're not leaders.

If they are doing their job correctly, we should barely know they are there.

u/Haulie Jan 27 '22

So your saying it's fine Doreen,a self admitted rapist, was moderator

I'm not saying that, and it's difficult to ascertain how anyone could even reach such a moronic conclusion from what I said. You somehow managed to come up with... the exact opposite of what I said, so excuse me but I'm going to go ahead and treat you like you are some kind of asshole, purely because I don't don't see how anyone could be that far off base unless they were being deliberate about it.

Genuinely one of the dumbest fucking comments I've ever read. My clearly communicated position is that the entire mod team is radioactive and everyone needs to go.

0

u/NamelessMIA Jan 27 '22

How do you not understand how your comment lead directly to that point. You insisted we should avoid learning who the mods are, which means if we have another Doreen you'd rather we just don't know and let them stay on. Just because they aren't leading us doesn't mean we shouldn't know who they are. They still have an important job that gives them power over the rest of the group. We shouldn't just give that away to a bunch of nameless/faceless individuals

6

u/Haulie Jan 27 '22

You insisted we should avoid learning who the mods are, which means if we have another Doreen you'd rather we just don't know and let them stay on

Do you think Doreen's rapey history was gonna come out in an AMA or something?

Do you know they literally did a "Meet the Mods" post just a few weeks ago?

https://www.reddit.com/r/antiwork/comments/rq4knz/youre_invited_to_meet_the_mods_again_for_the_next/

And yet... here we are. But hey, let's go with your thoroughly braindead plan of... doing that again?

1

u/NamelessMIA Jan 27 '22

Just because a meet the mods post wouldn't find out someone's history of rape doesn't mean it's useless. For example, we may find out one of the mods is a 21 year old NEET anarchist. If you don't want to read the post that's fine but advocating that we actually learn less about the people who are in charge of bans/post removal/rule enforcement is a step backwards.

1

u/Haulie Jan 27 '22

Nice casually ignoring that they literally did the thing you're advocating for and the sub is still in complete disarray because they got self-important.

1

u/NamelessMIA Jan 27 '22

"It didn't totally resolve the problem so we shouldn't do it" isn't a good argument. People die despite wearing their seat belt every day but if I advocated that people stop wearing seatbelts you'd rightfully point out how dumb that is.

Do you have a valid reason for suggesting we don't do a post like that?

1

u/Haulie Jan 27 '22

The (really clearly communicated) point was that they shouldn't be elevated to any position of importance when they are, in fact, little more than glorified e-janitors.

Your main takeaway from, "We shouldn't elevate these people who can't be trusted at all by pointing a spotlight at them in a way that can only serve to elevate them," was, "Yeah, we actually shouldn't know any information about these people at all," which makes you either a deliberate troll, or too dumb to acknowledge further.

1

u/NamelessMIA Jan 27 '22

The (really clearly communicated) point was that they shouldn't be elevated to any position of importance

Being a mod is a position of importance whether you want to admit it or not. They aren't the leaders of the movement or anything, but they are given a power over every single person in this sub as they're able to delete comments, remove posts, or even ban people from participating. THAT IS ALREADY GIVING THEM POWER. As a condition of that power, we should know more about them in order to determine whether or not we want to give them that kind of control over the discussion.

Your main takeaway from, "We shouldn't elevate these people who can't be trusted at all by pointing a spotlight at them in a way that can only serve to elevate them" was, "Yeah, we actually shouldn't know any information about these people at all," which makes you either a deliberate troll, or too dumb to acknowledge further.

Your conclusion was that we shouldn't try to get to know the mods. The entire point of your post was literally suggesting we should not attempt to learn more about them. Do you not understand what you said or are you just trying to downplay your own conclusion because you realize it was dumb?

1

u/Hard2Digest Jan 27 '22

Why not have all the current mods apply for their current positions 🤷

1

u/Snoo5950 Jan 27 '22

maybe we should hold elections on who should be a mod

1

u/Nails_on-chalk-board Jan 27 '22

But I love how self absorbed they are, it makes them go on TV and do interviews for my entertainment.

1

u/ElectionAssistance Jan 28 '22

the other problem is that the mod team seems to change too quickly to even introduce them, and now the list of mods is gone off the sidebar.

1

u/Haulie Jan 28 '22

https://www.reddit.com/r/antiwork/about/moderators

But yes, you are right re: them changing the mod team constantly.

1

u/ElectionAssistance Jan 28 '22

Thank you one who is wise in the ways of reddit.

any tips on how to disable CSS for this sub?

2

u/Haulie Jan 28 '22

You should be able to disable it in your browser's dev tools, but "how" will vary by browser. Easy to google, though.

Not sure how you would do it on a mobile device, tho.

1

u/Jaydeekay80 Jan 28 '22

I disagree. We SHOULD meet them so they can be shredded properly. By that I mean of course….on another sub. Cause thanks to that one loser, and the other coming down the pipe, this one is done. Thanks for that btw. Hope whatever Fox paid was worth it

1

u/ShameDoe Jan 28 '22

But they are already elevated, since they have the power to delete/ban/even remove the whole sub if they want. We should at least know who they are

1

u/project2501a Jan 28 '22

Guess what? 3 more accounts were added in the last 2 hours.

Betcha the mods did not announce that anywhere.

There are no new mods it’s the same mods who are panicking to make alt accounts because we’re calling for them to step down

25

u/Uncommented-Code Jan 27 '22

To be fair, if I was a mod in this whole shitshow and comitted to not stepping down, I sure as hell would be making an alt right now so people don‘t doxx me for being a mod.

It‘s probably the next best idea, right after resigning.

u/marykaymylove Jan 27 '22

If we're gonna meet them, tell them to dress properly, get a nice haircut, and clean their room especially the bed!

32

u/Antelope-Automatic Jan 27 '22

Who do you think has time to moderate a subreddit with millions of members? Cause it's not gonna be a struggling worker, or some put together young CEO type. But that's okay. Mods don't have to be representatives, we don't need to meet the mods and nor does anyone else, we just need them to stay out of the way and enforce the rules.

It doesn't matter who the person reviewing reports and stuff is really, as long as they do it well and don't try to make themselves more than that

12

u/Elaan21 Jan 27 '22

This is a really good point.

I would have the time (but have zero desire to) but I'm definitely not representative of the sub. I'm a 30 something freelancer who moved back home during the pandemic to help take care of family. Aka, someone Fox News could easily spin to be a mooch, regardless of reality.

It would never occur to me to speak on behalf of anyone here unless I was armed with statements from users of the sub and was merely the vehicle for the message. As in, "I'm here giving this interview because most of the people on the sub are working right now and can't afford to take time off, but here is what they want you to know." And even then it would feel weird.

I think people confuse subreddits created around a fandom or content creator with those created around an ideal or interest. No one thinks the mods of AITA are the ultimate arbiters of assholery. Why would this sub be any different?

7

u/CaptainOfMyPants Jan 27 '22

The solution is to get rid of them. All of them. Not meet them.

13

u/RedStilettoDickStomp Jan 27 '22

I read something yesterday that there was someone who admitted to sexually assaulting someone or a group of people, was that a mod? If so, has that person stepped down and fucked off?

1

u/OneMustAdjust Jan 28 '22 edited Jan 28 '22

Try not to say something mean, try not to say something mean, try not to say something mean

Unpopular opinion:

The mod fucked up, egregiously. In the present as well as the past. The mod has been ridiculed enough. We as redditors should put down the pitchforks and lift this person up. We are many, we are one. The team is as strong as its weakest link.

But for real with the alts, not cool.

4

u/JackBinimbul Jan 28 '22

3

u/Privatebrowsingatwrk Jan 27 '22

What's your aim as a moderator?

First of all - I don't really want to speak (as a sort of representative, I reject representation!) for anarchism or the anti-work movement.

Source: https://old.reddit.com/r/antiwork/comments/rwuwzs/rantiwork_introduction_rules_clarification_thread/hrebeov/

However, at this point we still have past interviews that were done but haven't released yet. Namely:

Kyodo News (Japanese) by /u/Kimezukae, release unknown.

New York Times by /u/Kimezukae, release unknown - community members of this subreddit also have given answers, as far as we are aware.

Fast company by /u/Kimezukae, release unknown

They have been a mod for less than a month. So what was the interval between the linked post and the interviews???

Why not fill a PR role with someone that has actual experience as well? If we are presented with any PR opportunities and play our cards right, we have a person with the ability to communicate for the sub. Those that fill traditional mod roles did not sign up for that and we saw the outcome. Lets get ahead this time.

Sounds pretty bigoted to me

So this person stepping up now ends up the target of millions or even if it’s just thousands looking into every bit of their life where a percentage of people mess with their current employer or family members because they want to fuck with this sub or are so high strung for the cause that no one is good enough and punish anyone for trying.

Many will point out how a normal person wouldn’t step up to be scrutinized so completely for a non payed no benefit position, so there must be something wrong with them and scrutinize them even more.

There’s no win to this approach. Anonymity is important to even get someone to want to put themselves in such a spot when theres only downsides from those against the movement and those in it who will never be happy with whoever this person is.

Reactionary approaches are gonna burn everything down

Do you even known who you’re taking to here? Basically, I’m a pretty big deal.

u/AmaDeusen- Jan 27 '22

After the first one we saw and heard, I would pay not to see/hear the other ones.

Absolute epitome of internet cringe/anti-social/awkward/etc. person.

u/Kindly-Insect8748 Jan 27 '22

They’re all underage. Watch.

1

u/UnacceptableBAR Jan 27 '22

Too late, they’ve already done 4 more interviews. I can only imagine how shockingly bad they will be.

u/PoorSicklyVegan Jan 27 '22

On video call! We wanna make sure it's not just another account for the rapist!!!

1

u/sokocanuck Jan 27 '22

Can we call it the Creature Feature?

1

u/rushmc1 Jan 27 '22

What about the jerk who a few weeks back was trying to dictate what opinions on overpopulation were "allowable" here?

1

u/Chaoxytal Jan 27 '22

It’s all 20 something “communist” kids who live in their parents’ mansions and have never been employed.

1

u/Fatmanpuffing Jan 27 '22

at this point i am believing that every mod is just a alt account for the rapist

1

u/septicboy Anarcho-Communist Jan 27 '22

Mods are not people you'd wanna meet. They should stay faceless in their mom's basements.

1

u/spelunk_in_ya_badonk Jan 27 '22

Lmfao it is so obvious none of them can be trusted. You’re deluding yourself. Abandon ship.

1

u/XanadurSchmanadur Jan 27 '22

"And this mod is our dear friend...

Beff Jezos"

1

u/Youngloreweaver Jan 28 '22

Standard neckbeard Reddit mods, the lot of em, I would bet my wage that not a single one of them has actually experienced any worker abuse and to them our plight is a way to their 15 minutes of fame

1

u/Gustavo6046 Jan 28 '22

Like TF2 videos?

1

u/i_only_eat_nachos Jan 28 '22

Let’s do it.

I heard they’re all from the same landfill, so it should be easy to find them.

1

u/itsanewawebsite Jan 28 '22

So I hear you like people that like choking the chicken?

1

u/gods_loop_hole Jan 28 '22

Its time for the mods to own up to their positions on this sub.

1

u/gun_decker Jan 28 '22

No, you can't!.....how would that be done? Why would that be reasonable? Have you seen any other sub do that?

1

u/Shredderthegamer Jan 28 '22

I wanna know how many more proud criminals there are

1

u/ew2x4 Jan 28 '22

They can keep their sporadic masterbatory sleep overs to themselves and just gtfo.

1

u/igotabridgetosell Jan 28 '22

Yea 21 year olds who havent actually had a job in their life should not be the ones moderating this sub.

1

u/Destroyermode Jan 28 '22

Mods are nothing but Referees

1

u/KrakenXIV Jan 28 '22

Yes please.. what a dumpster fire was today 😂😋

1

u/gekc49 Jan 28 '22

Yeah, I want to know who are the mods of this group too. I was irked that one was a "21-yr old long-term unemployed anarchist". I just got flashbacks from my college days when people like them would just grab the mic and crown themselves as emperor disregarding any democratic process.

u/[deleted] Jan 28 '22

Surprised to be attacked by corporate media? C'mon, we could see this coming a mile away.

Solidarity comrades
