What's sad about this whole thing is that there are people in this group that have PR experience and would have most likely helped with PR for the movement but instead we have someone with no experience or training in PR speaking.

142

u/Cgull1234 Jan 27 '22

But it fed the ego of a single social outcast. Isn't that more important than the will of 1.7 million people.

63

u/Skelemansteve Jan 27 '22

More importantly it was the perfect person for the media to use to discredit our movement. The mainstream media doesnt want to get someone who can articulate our talking points well, they want a cringy kid who they can easily discredit and spin the story to their own advantage. I remember someone posting like a month ago that this would most likely happen

People let things get to their head. They were contacted by Fox and suddenly thought they were a leader and a champion instead of a sucker.

Turn. Down. Interviews. It's easy to do.

If you care about helping a movement, let someone with talent or experience or charisma take the PR role. The role of a mod is not a qualification for verbal sparring with professional propagandists.

u/Rignite Jan 27 '22

Enough to purposely derail a movement

21

u/SizorXM Jan 27 '22

I think it’s legitimately a massive disconnect from reality on their part. They work less than 20hrs a week and spend the rest of their free time as a mod here and start to think they’re the leader of something. It’s ego and narcissism that made Doreen think they had any right to portray themselves as the face of a movement when they should be portraying themselves in court for sexual assault

Yeah.. unfortunately people fight to get their 5 minutes of fame. You'd think it's easy to resist when everything these days is megram, mebook and metweets. Look at this pancake I made! Hear my political opinion which makes me think I'm right and incredibly smart!

Couldn't say what I'd do given the opportunity, even if I do have stage fright and am incredibly self-concious and afraid of humiliation.

u/thecheeper Jan 27 '22

I'm just shaking my head at it all.

How are you supposed to understand a movement, speak on behalf of a movement (especially publicly), go onto national tv and give an interview -- how can you do all of that without never having lived through what work reform / anti-work is all about?

If you've never had to experience work disparity, wage stresses (Income vs. COL), management stressors (Healthy vs. Bad Management), corporate red tape, the extreme lack of benefits (Looking at you, US Medical coverage, Parental benefits, etc.), etc., how are you supposed to understand any of it? You simply don't know what you're getting into if you haven't experienced any of those things. I don't want to sit here and say that younger people don't know, because there are younger working-class people who are killing themselves to make their goals happen, nor do I want to say that part-time workers also don't know, because all of those issues I mentioned above also exist in the part time world. I legit just struggle to understand the thought processes that went into this.

23

u/M_Townley Jan 27 '22

I think there is a real disparity here between some members who are actually just completely anti-work, as in, permanent unemployment. Not anti-work in the sense of making improvements in the areas you mentioned. The former align with anarchy more than reform.

16

u/thecheeper Jan 27 '22

I agree with you 100%. There is a very real disparity here; you have a lot of members who are actively hoping for a brighter future in the employment world and want to see that difference, who need to see that difference, simply to survive. You have a lot of incredibly experienced people whose stories make up the fabric of the anti-work movement and provide substantiation and framework for actual and real modern work reforms.

I've noticed the last few months, it seems to have spiraled more and more into not-work versus anti-work. There's a lot more of simply 'quit your job', without knowing the OP's background, financial level, job market, etc.

I feel like mods took a bribe from some really powerful people to end this here

703

u/Chickensong Jan 27 '22

I was actually thinking that I hope that's the case. It's a lot cheaper to specifically ask for one particularly awful person who barely makes any money, give them some money, and make everyone look that bad, than it is to actually have people give workers fair compensation for their work.

192

u/DaggerStone Jan 27 '22

Doreen looked like a moron of their own volition. I doubt it was insidious, she’s just a fucking idiot

69

u/ncutweiners Jan 27 '22

I have heard that they did pay them for the interview and in this day and age I could definetly see this going down. I could see the sub falling into an "its scripted just play along and you get a fat check" trap

40

u/computerblue54 Jan 27 '22

Occam’s razor should definitely be applied here. This sub got infiltrated by “outsiders” trying to make everyone look bad and coordinating an interview to make everyone look worse? Or fox reached out and they had even the shortest interaction with Doreen, they knew exactly how this would turn out without doing anything except cutting a check and a few minutes of air time.

10

u/DaggerStone Jan 27 '22

307

u/xSciFix Jan 27 '22

Yeah really.

Conspiracy or not if y'all thought Fox News was ever going to put someone on that didn't make us look bad then lmao. That's the entire point of that propaganda. It was always going to just be "let's dunk on the lib clowns!"

There's no reason to give corporate media the time of day. Even if you come across as perfectly sane, rational, and eloquent they'll either chop up the segment to make you look foolish or simply not air it.

Now the whole sub is bickering and splintering up. Textbook.

u/SeptembersBud just wants to do nothing Jan 27 '22

Yep.

Casual lurker of this subreddit, haven't ever posted but I visit it at pretty much every day. Have been for a while now, and seeing the results of the Fox News interview I can tell it has worked waaaay too well.

Infighting, splintering, bickering and arguing about what should be done and what shouldn't. Everything is burning as the hundreds of thousands of people each trying to voice their opinion only adds to the figurative fire that this subreddit is engulfed in. (Not saying we shouldn't talk about this or voice our opinions in the matter, but chaos feeds on chaos)

The modern media machine is nothing but a way for the big corporations to push their agenda. This interview will happily be used by all outlets wishing to discredit any sense of what a 'online' movement is and is simply looking to demonize a group of individuals that simply want more in this world.

This is extremely dangerous to our Democracy, might I add.

People are going to point at the woman being interviewed, paint her as one of 'THE leaders', and make the public look at /r/antiwork as another crazy online forum filled with extreme cases instead of normal people pushing for workers rights. Manipulation at its finest.

10

u/BongLeardDongLick Jan 27 '22

That’s why you also record it yourself and release unedited footage. The hardcore GOP boomers will never see it because they ingest all of their news through fox propaganda but the internet would have a field day with it if they chopped it up to make you seem like you don’t know what you’re talking about.

The problem isn’t that they did an interview, it’s that they chose a 25 year old dog walker to represent us. I’m a 31 year old middle management worker for the largest company in my industry and have been busting my ass for years to get to the position I’m in. I know there are other people out there in similar positions to myself who could have handled that interview far better. Fox knew exactly what they were doing. They purposely chose someone they knew they could steamroll to be the face of the movement.

Imagine if this type of person was able to get any sort of real power. It would be a shit show for anyone below them.

8

u/Amasero Jan 27 '22

The alleged rapist who posted a long text on facebook, about how they are not a rapist? Seemed like what they confessed to was fairly close to rape, so yeah... Not a good look for this sub. Just fucking delet this pos sub already and lets move on.

I don't have the link but she was sleeping next to her roommate and put her roomates hand on her dirty unwashed penis. Which is a weird sentence to write.

13

u/Argent_Hythe Jan 27 '22

that would be sexual assault, I think

the more I learn about all this the more I have to question what the actual fuck where they thinking?

10

u/brownie-cheesecake9 Jan 27 '22

she also posted about having sex with someone while the person was drunk. The roommate story is even worse, not gonna go into detail, and also an anarchist organization publicly ousted her for being a serial rapist.

Summary: Put partner's hand on her penis while partner was asleep.

Masturbated next to partner while they were asleep numerous times when asked not to.

Partner set alarms to not fall asleep for extended time while cuddling with Mod, Mod turned off alarms and did ??? while alarms were off.

Yep, that's even worse than I expected when I read the other redditor's comment. It wasn't a once time thing, I'm so sorry for the person who had to suffer all of that.

The very fact that I had to work 50-60 hour weeks when I was 22 is why I'm here. No one should have to do that. Not me, not you, not anyone.

I'm over 30 now and if you include the time I spend trying to monetize a hobby I still work about 50 hours a week but at least some of that is enjoyable. And I'm still antiwork as fuck.

I am 30 working in healthcare with abusive, exploitative and unsafe working conditions. I just want safer and more reasonable worker rights like tbey have in Europe.

We need people to fight for paid sick days, paid maternity leave, 12 hour shift limits, make our 30 min lunches count as paid time worked, also give people a 30 min paid time credit for commuting if they are forced to come in to work when they could work from home, etc. There are so many countless issues we need to fight for, we dont need idiots whining about their dog walking job when amazon workers are pissing in bottles or nurses are not getting water breaks so they are getting UTIs and kidney stones.

I'm 29 and work 35 hrs a week and I was like but why though? I'm a social anarchist and all, and my experience as such has been shaped by my time working shitty jobs. I did 5 years in the Navy as a corpsman (medic) - and crazy enough, even as an anarchist I miss the military so much! I mean socialized health care, housing allowance with cost of living modifiers depending on where you're stationed, food allowance. It was heavenly by comparison! I managed a health care clinic, in which I started a program for the informed consent model of HRT for trans patients in a red area where patients would legit drive 8 hours or more to see us because trans health care is just that unrepresented. I ran a few nonprofits. I've worked on farms, in retail, serving. I'm now a cook in a bar for some reason (but hey free drinks for "comraderie"!).

I still can't afford to live on my own in my town (it's not even a big place), especially when I'm a single parent of 2 kids (the main reason I left the Navy after my term). I'm kinda drowning over here but I'm at an apathetic stage in my journey where I'm like shit I couldn't even get an apartment at $20/hr full time so why do I care if I'm making $12/hr part time when I'm fucked either way (just slightly less stressed).

Needless to say, I'm insulted that a "long term unemployed" 21 year old was chosen to represent this sub. Honestly, anyone with enough free time to moderate this sub isn't going to be "antiwork". They just don't work. And I feel like there's a distinction to be made there.

Most of the posts here that make it to front page are by workers who work insane hours and absolutely deserve the raises their bosses refuse to give them. Now THAT is antiwork. Real boots on the ground skilled laborers taking back the means of production (even if that means of production is just their labor itself). Real workers hitting their bosses where it hurts. That's what gets views here. That's what's exciting to see! And that's the sort of people we need to be representing our community before the media.

It seems so obvious to me. The mods are just keeping discussions civil. They're not actually the ones making the popular posts that make this sub what it is. And therefore, they're not the ones we need to represent us. Ugh! 😩

-Edited to clarify that free drinks are a perk of the job. I don't "steal" them, they're given to me by managers and sometimes by customers because I'm personable and people like me.

I think this is the worst part of it all. The sub was supposed to help rethink the way we work and give workers a better hand. It was meant to help you. I’m sorry this fidgety fucker ruined it.

20

u/ahabentis Jan 27 '22

Yea. Especially since I do hold the opinion that one day, society may advance to the point where working yourself to death isn’t necessary. There’s so much more to hoping we, as a species, will advance that far. Dude said absolutely fuck all about it. No real argument or any evidence just making a joke out of the sub.

It just shows how they only care about themselves, if you spent more than a day just reading what the top posts and comments are about you would know what we are about. The fact that the person thought being an long term unemployed 21 was representative of our plights it’s just arrogance. What makes it worse is that there is a concentrated effort to remove all critical comments and posts referring to this.

u/ahabentis Jan 27 '22

I mean - even if you are very well spoken, polished, and put together being of such a young age will be a liability for things like this because it is an easy way for detractors to distract the public from any valid points that are made.

It's simple they'll say something like:

"These 'Anti-Work' people are a bunch of kids with almost no experience in the working world and have been coddled all their lives to think that having to do anything is beneath them"

And in about one sentence, a big chunk of the population will tune out the actual content of your message.

18

u/onemanlegion Jan 27 '22

Not even that long my guy.

"laziness is a virtue" on repeat on every fox/sinclair affiliate.

Boom, message and movement are dead on the spot to 75% of americans right there. They aren't going to do research, they aren't going to look up who this mod is, what the sub is, etc.

They will watch the interview, say "what an idiot" and never think about it again until it gets brought up in conversation and guess what that persons response will be. "oh that idiot i saw on tv that couldn't even make eye contact? what a joke".

Them accusing people of agism is hilarious.

No, dude, we aren't pissed because you're 21 and haven't figured anything out about life yet, most of us didn't when we were that age, but you deemed yourself fit to lead a subreddit of 1.7 million people and I've met kids in middle school who are more articulate and have better grammar than you. And are FAR more capable of expressing themselves in a way that befits any kind of leadership role.

61

u/bkbeezy Jan 27 '22

The lack of self-awareness is astounding. I’m only a tad older than them and I can in full confidence say that I’m still figuring life and myself out. I know better than to act otherwise. The arrogance to pretend to be representing an entire movement when, through their own admittance, they have no experience with what they moving against (see long term unemployed lol) is shocking and genuinely really funny.

Absolute delusion to call himself a long term unemployed person at 21.

93

u/ToErr_IsHuman Jan 27 '22

He is hiding behind the Germany definition which is >1 year unemployed is considered “long term unemployment “. That’s not my issue. My issue is he is going on interviews talking about “anti work” when he has barely ever worked in his life. I saw in one comment he might have had an internship??

Plus…he is in a much more worker friendly country than most people in the sub. I was on a job site with Germans year ago and they were very strict about their working hours. The idea of working extended hours is almost non existent there due to laws and unions. I was out of luck if I had to get in touch with someone in German to help solve a problem over the weekend.

37

u/hlaiie Jan 27 '22

He’s never even had a real job. He said in a comment that he had to intern when he was in school so that’s what he considered his “job.”

19

u/ToErr_IsHuman Jan 27 '22

Even worse. So zero real life work experiences but is interviewing for anti work topics. Looks like the mods are living memes and are quickly turning into Karens.

From the response I have seen so far, I don’t think either of the mods doing interviews are mature enough to process, reflect, and learn from what they have done. They think they are in the right. People like that are often the most dangerous to be around.

Lmfao derailed by someone who has no experience in what they are criticizing. That's like all of America right now: people standing up for (or criticizing) things they have no idea about, and inadvertently being the problem.

Disclaimer: I am an avid supporter of this subreddit, and have my own story I will one day share and write.

Disclaimer, disclaimer: I believe work is important. It provides income and purposeful meaning, and also generate and disperses wealth. THAT BEING SAID, the corporatization of work culture is extremely toxic.

Shift the focus away from money and back to people, away from profits and back to the members generating it. Working can be joyous, and used to be. I've experienced that myself.

But seriously

Fuck corporate culture and the social contagion of corporstism

84

u/plynch815 Jan 27 '22

smash cut to a smoky boardroom filled with fatcat CEOs and the council of owners who run the world: "Now we just sit back and watch the movement tear apart one of their own: a particularly inarticulate, stupid, and ill-prepared one of their own! hahahahahahahaha"

and The Board wins again
