Just because the mods fucked up, doesn't make the message of disillusioned workers any less valid.

For me, a lot of it is that we're already fighting an uphill battle and this crap didn't help.

The message is still valid, but validity isn't enough.

C'mon man. Don't be that guy.

7

u/and_dont_blink Jan 27 '22

They're repeating what the sidebar says, I felt a kind of pity that the mods are spending so much time right now tracking down and trying to discredit where people are going instead of fixing their own shite. Kind of telling.

How the fuck does one person going on an interview stop a movement? Why would that stop people from organizing? I've been unsuccessful at starting a union in my Healthcare jobs but we've gotten raises and many nurses and CNAs have left for better pay. I left my old facility in December for a 40% raise and I'm considering another one with even better benefits. This reddit forum isn't a movement. This is a place for resources and info from other workers. It's not a movement if you just sit on your ass and demand resignations from reddit moderators. The movement only gets "stopped" if workers do nothing. Stop stiiting on your ass and DO SOMETHING in your community.

35

u/Kiki_iscoolaf Jan 27 '22

You know the subreddit isn’t a movement right. Sure, it’s a gathering place for people in the movement, but that’s it. A mod isn’t gonna kill the entire movement just because it crashed a single subreddit

I'm out of the loop. I was gone for like 2 days. What the fuck happened?

132

u/SquirrelKnuckle Jan 27 '22 edited Jan 27 '22

Lol. One of the mods, /u/AbolishWork did a Fox News interview, despite the wishes of the sub.

It was a trainwreck.

"How old are you?"

"30."

"What do you do for work?"

"I walk dogs for about 25 hours a week, so I'd like less work hours."

"Do you have any aspirations to do anything more than walk dogs?"

"Well, I'd like to teach."

"Teach?! What would you like to teach?"

"You know, philosophy or critical thinking. That sort of thing."

"I know I would definitely take your class (laughing)."

Then they removed the mod. Added another one that was 16 hours old. It's being said that it was a mod from the Discord. Then, apparently, I haven't seen more proof other than hearsay, the new mod clicked a packet sniffer and the ip was the previous mod.

There's also some self-reported sexual assault on the part of /u/AbolishWork that has been linked a bit.

It's been a clusterfuck.

39

u/Fenrir2401 Jan 27 '22

You forgot the 21-year-old-longtime-unemployed new mod who doesn't like teachers, also gave some interviews and has stepped down by now....

18

u/EspyOwner Jan 27 '22

...how do you not like teachers? They're literally one of the biggest beneficiaries of this movement? Non union teachers are some of the most abused labor in the US.

Edit: idk if it wasn't clear but I didn't mean you the user, I meant "you" the vague subject of the sentence.

12

u/Fenrir2401 Jan 27 '22

Best guess: This guy was a lazy-ass student, got called out for it by his teachers and "became an anarchist" because of it.

I think this is more in reference to the post where someone said in light of the interview that mainstream media weaponizes media appearances against us to make us look bad. And the common sense reply is that they did nothing of the sort. The mod made us look bad. There was no editing, out of context clips or anything to twist the narrative

37

u/Lurkingmonster69 Jan 27 '22

Your 100% right comrade.

But anyone putting an ounce of energy literal or emotional into a subreddit now being run by a unemployed 21 year old anarchist who is giving interviews to the NYT is setting themselves up for disappointment.

There’s way better subs to discuss workers grievances and worker solidarity.

21

u/____CrimsoN____ Jan 27 '22

Yeah this thread definitely opened my eyes up to a few of them.

32

u/Lurkingmonster69 Jan 27 '22

I’m involved in several leftist movements and orgs. I don’t pretend that a subreddit is a political movement.

Why people are so angry is that after spending years reading people working 60 hours a week pour their hearts out, abused workers sharing their courage to tell bosses to fuck off, to have that all made into a fucking charicature of a meme by unemployed or lazy fucks who were so narcissistic that they knew better than the workers of the sub is really disheartening. It’s just like a kick in the dick that none of us needed.

4

u/camycamera Jan 28 '22

Unemployed or lazy fucks

Christ. Guys, look, I agree that these mods should not have presumed to represent the movement. But none of you read the stuff linked in the sidebars, about what “laziness” actually is and unemployment, and how these things are seen as something to shame people and bully, as it stems from the idea that “work is inherently good, therefore if you don’t do it, you’re bad”. Not all people are able to work. Not all people are able to work full time. Some people are just physically or mentally incapable of it. And that’s ok. We should support them.

What is not ok, and what distresses me seeing this attitude on this subreddit from this drama, is people doing exactly what this fucking sub was formed to be against. Shaming people for their circumstances. Yes, the mods fucked up. But for christ sakes, you are using the exact same talking points as fox news by calling them lazy and shaming people for being unemployed.

2

u/Lurkingmonster69 Jan 28 '22

Yah at my best I would be far more tactful. I have disabled family members who can’t work. I get it. I have an uncles whose mental illness is so severe that he can only work 20 hours a week at Job Lot.

But if my uncle was a moderator of a sub of 1.6 million people screaming about the labour struggle and didn’t listen to its members or do his god damn mother fucking leg work to prep. Then fuck him and the horse he rode in on.

3

u/camycamera Jan 28 '22

Sure ok. But fuck if it isn’t an overreaction, and it’s exactly what Fox news etc wanted from this. And people have used it as an excuse to say these things about the mods, deserved or not, just excuses the continued use of the attitude that I was talking about.

And also to be clear it’s not just disabled people who can’t work. Some people just aren’t wired for the way we do work now. And that’s ok.

3

u/WokeLib420 Jan 27 '22

Can you explain the anarchist thing?

14

u/Lurkingmonster69 Jan 27 '22

For me personally, anyone who is claiming to be an anarchist, is at best completely infantile. Their are principles from anarchism that are good. But their overarching philosophy is just doomed failure (see .... history) and MOST of the time espoused by self centered westerners who have western ideals of freedom as “you can’t tell me what to do”.

A 40 year old anarchist who I see doing work in communities is a comrade (certainly now). A 21 yearlong term unemployed old anarchist or a 30 year old 10 hour work week anarchist is a child who wants to abolish the tyranny of bed time. The equivalent of transient crust punks.

But let’s put all that shit aside. The point is that these mods can’t deflect to “I’m autistic” and pretend they did not see what this community became about. That’s fucking super cringe and disrespectful to autistic workers and comrades. These mods are narcissistic babies who acted selfishly and did huge brand damage to what was serving as a good breeding ground for foundational class consciousness. Truly scumbags.

6

u/DonKihotec Anarcho-pacifist Jan 27 '22

That is why I left all the anarchist subs back in the day and why I enjoyed antiwork so much. The anarchist subs are full of 20-30 y.o. revolutionaries, who have the only asipiration of making the revolution for the sake of revolution, because it is cool to be radical.

True

The bike should be antiwork, the rider should be mods

19

u/DrMobius0 Jan 27 '22

The mods aren't even the only ones we should be mad at. Fox was clearly looking to run a hit piece. While I realize it's roughly what we expect from them, maybe we should, I dunno, be pissed about that too?

39

u/____CrimsoN____ Jan 27 '22

Absolutely. I guess a lot of people here just expect Fox News to do… well… what it does. Reactionary news. So no one is really pissed because it’s to be expected. I guess it’s worse when a mod just falls for obvious bait and makes us all look bad.

9

u/DrMobius0 Jan 27 '22

The shitty thing is, Fox just keeps doing this shit. Honestly, they need to be shut down. They aren't even news, just lies.

10

u/Kellogz27 Jan 27 '22

But can you even call it a hit piece? It's obvious Fox wanted that to be it, but most of the questions were basic entry ones. If you can't even answer those well...

3

u/suavecitos_31 Jan 27 '22

They are a propaganda group for sure. That being said don’t agree to go on a propaganda network? It’s not discourse or helpful to the cause. I don't even blame Fox on this one. If we want to change people's minds, we can't put out a caricature of what Fox's demographic thinks of when they think of people who don't want to work. The fact that the mod in question is literally a self-admitted sexual assaulter certainly doesn't help.

8

u/FabrizioSantoz Jan 27 '22

This literally has nothing to do with fox news. It could have been CNN asking the SAME questions, the same outcome would be happening.

This is 100% self inflicted.

4

u/Jamesbond907 Jan 27 '22

And CNN would. Does anyone here actually think this is left vs right still? CNN has just as much interest in stopping these ideas as fox does.

Also fox is just doing what they do. Who here is gonna start hating fox? It’s been trash since forever.

10

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '22

Exactly. Like we are really letting Fox News win by destroying a sub with 1.6 million people? Yes the mod f’ed up, but this is no reason to let the whole sub get destroyed.

12

u/elveszett Jan 27 '22

The problem is not that the mods fucked up, the problem is that the mods demonstrated with the interview but also with their reaction now that they don't give a flying fuck about the movement or anyone, they just want to inflate their egos. They see themselves entitled to take the lead of this rather than just being some guys moderating a website.

Unless they all step down and cede control to more popular members of this community that prove they have no intention to do anything within the sub other than acting like a moderator, any time spent building this sub is time you are losing to teenagers with zero real life experience that think they are the next Karl Marx.

I'm not one to believe conspiracy theories, but if someone wanted to break up the antiwork movement they would do things like this. A sub would see an exodus over mod drama, new subs would try to replace, but they wouldn't be unified, and you'd see more mod drama and exodus. Same thing happened with the GME subs.

It's not a conspiracy theory, it's a documented tactic and it happens ALL THE TIME. Find someone who claims to speak for the movement but isn't actually that in any capacity, take them apart, then watch everyone focus on the "traitors in our midst" instead of the prior goal, while onlookers from outside just roll their eyes and move on.

25

Doreen the rapist admitted to sleeping with someone under the influence KNOWING they were under the influence because “they thought it was okay” (paraphrasing here).

18

u/GradeAPrimeFuckery Jan 27 '22

Let's not paraphrase.

The person accusing me of serial rape and I were involved in sexual conduct. This scenario involved alcohol on their part but I had been informed (multiple times) that it wasn't a big deal (they said they were only tipsy) and that they were consenting to what was happening. I took them at their word and I will be more responsible in the future when it comes to alcohol and sex.

Far from dead, but it has been dealt a serious injury.

7

u/Hitchie_Rawtin Jan 27 '22

It's more that the movement's name is a misnomer. This place started as antiwork, explicitly meaning antiwork. Then tons of people started joining the last two years asking to be treated fairly.

The majority of the movement's followers are looking for basic fairness and humane rights but this sub was built from the beginning for lazy navel-gazing anarchists (like said mod) who feel unfairly coerced/violated as opposed to unfairly paid/incentivised when being asked to do anything they don't want to do.

3

u/Rguy315 Jan 27 '22

Right, I think what we need to emphasize is that it's the commodification of labor that is the problem, not labor itself. This gets lost in the ultra-left messaging of the mods.

The state of this subreddits moderation is so abysmal that I almost wonder if Fox paid them off to try to tank the movement. The mods couldn't possibly have been THIS incompetent.

35

u/DudeEngineer Jan 27 '22

The point of this post is that Fox literally did allow them to look good.

The mod bring interviewed did 99% of the damage. Usually I would agree that comparing Fox News to a snake would make sense. In this case it's more like they licked one of those super poisonous frogs.

4

u/Dangerous-Idea1686 Jan 27 '22

Dude, if I was the leader of some movement, I would kill to be asked those questions in that manner.

First you get an elevator pitch opportunity to sell yourself and your ideas. Then you get an opportunity to address what all the viewers are probably thinking (i.e. are you just a lazy piece of shit) and counter it by saying something along the lines of "no actually it's incredibly shallow to paint a movement about workers rights to one about laziness".

like blaming a snake for biting someone when said person deliberately went to the snake's house and decided to stick their arm in.

I wouldn't even call it a snake. More like a german shepherd. If you got bit by a german shepherd, that's probably on you. People need to stop making excuses in this situation and blaming Fox here. You can hate fox all you want and that's 100% fair but not in this case. Dude asked questions that your uncle, your date, or some random dude in the bar might ask you. There was nothing loaded aside from the fact that the moderator was a failure at life.

I'd agree if Jesse Watters asked some misleading or loaded questions like "Have you stopped beating your wife?". But if you can't answer "aren't you just being lazy", "what do you do for work", "how old are you" and "do you have any career aspirations" then that's an issue with you not Fox. You've probably never talked to anyone in your life past high school or college. Which I'm not sure reddit moderator has lol. Reddit moderator just got hit by boomer questions and got destroyed lol. By BOOMER questions LOL.

Fox didn't set any traps. Dude was just a failure. If your uncle asks you if you have a girlfriend, it's not your uncles fault you can't get a girl

2

u/open_perspective Jan 27 '22

This has seemed like the play. It seems intentional, and there's this huge uptick of divisive behavior the day after, it's all very targeted and intentional.

2

u/TehMephs Jan 27 '22

It seems pretty clear to me this was a pretty deliberately cherry-picked interviewee to put on a stage and ask trappy questions to paint this picture that tHe LaZy LeFtIsTs are all like this person. It’s just kind of the undertone of everything Fox News does, and it’s absolutely going to get the desired response out of their viewer base, who happen to be overwhelmingly right leaning

It’s just all way too intentional for me to just take it at face value (as most things on FN). They had to have screened a bunch of potential people they sent this invite to for the worst possible chucklefuck to interview

If you're associating /r/antiwork with liberals, please read the fucking sidebar for once in your life.

10

u/beepboopbeepyy Jan 27 '22

There’s no way to know, but I would put my life savings on this group having a lot more left-leaning people, like, by a lot.

16

u/Fen_ Jan 27 '22

Liberals are not part of the left

Please, gain a modicum of political literacy.

No this is just more astroturfing to cause further dissent. And it seems to be working.

2

u/Khal1505 Jan 27 '22

They’re desperate to deflect it any way they can, and divide & conquer junkfood politics is the only card left to play.

It’s embarrassing to watch.

6

u/sophia-achamoth Jan 27 '22

Fox News is a Republican outlet, explicitly, and they trashed antiwork in every way.

So, yes, it is us vs Republicans. Republicans don't believe in workers' rights, and if you think they do, you're a fucking fool.

G-d I fucking miss the ChapoTrapHouse subreddit. Was it obnoxious and full of campists? Yes. Did I have to deal with capitalists seizing on the errors of the mod team to try to convince me to support reformist? No.

45

u/javyn1 Jan 27 '22

I liked the old Cum Town sub.

Because I'm gay

I didn't realize how much I missed Chapo until you mentioned it. That place was a toxic shithole but at least everyone took the ban like champs. You can ban a user but you can't ban an idea.

3

Honestly a good point. I don't remember users swarming other subs and spamming content the way the incels do when one of their subs gets shut down.

Its incredible how certain subreddits make claims with the most glaringly unsupported claims and everyone there unflappingly buys in.

That post is literally nonsense lol

going through abolishworks post history is such a wild trip now that I know exactly what she looks like and who she is. Adding that context makes so much and makes it that much more hilarious how they pretended to be this poor and oppressed individual.

My favorite comment was from 3 months ago where a user says they're going to leave the sub over that mod (abolish) and abolish just flips out on them and then eventually bans them

u/Asterza Jan 27 '22

yeah, i dont get the overreaction either honestly. get rid of the mod in all aspects. people that know anything will know that mods are not leaders of anything. they delete comments from a message board. big woop.

Why does anybody care what fox news thinks?

3

u/cookiewoke Jan 27 '22

I see your point, and really you shouldn't, but the problem is that the interview was such a disaster and it went so viral that everyone knows about it. It's going to make it harder for the movement to gain the same momentum it did before, and to be taken seriously again. But that'll change as time goes on.

15

u/jsmiley27 Jan 27 '22 edited Jan 27 '22

i have absolutely zero idea. fox news is the enemy of the people. why do we care what they think?

2

u/SauceHouseBoss Jan 28 '22

It’s not about what fox news thinks? It’s what the people who will see this interview (and possibly even non-republicans bc this interview has gone viral) will think

Change "/r/antiwork" to "/r/antiwork mods" and i'd agree.

3

u/NewfoundOrigin Jan 27 '22

What they're getting at with this - for anyone who doesn't understand.

'us liberals made a mistake - quick - lets blame fox news!'

It's about the fact that the person who did that interview fucked us all over and most of those on this sub are like 'our comrad got jipped by fox'

No guys, your 'comrad' was just a bafoon. and if you can't freaking see that clearly - wow...

If you'd like to discuss the US Labor Movement in a non-fucky environment, please consider visiting /r/USLaborMovement

I started it after the Fox teainwreck, when the mods in /r/AntiWork started banning people for complaining about their lies and betrayal of the community.

6

u/em_goldman Jan 27 '22

This lol. It’s amazing how little tolerance for conflict the internet and/or the left and/or white people have.

People feel like someone fucked up, sure. But I don’t burn down my house when my roommate doesn’t clean up their cat’s poop outside my door. I deal with the shit, and then I work together with them to figure out how to improve the situation.

This sub’s reaction to a single media interview feels like a coup by centrists and/or right-wing actors to sow divisiveness and eat our own tail.

FoxNews "specifically wanted" to interview doreen bc they already knew doreen's story and have an audience of mostly 50+ year old viewers who are varied in politics views, but 95% of whom hate at least two things: 1) lazy people and 2) trans people

That's the 'why'. The fact doreen's stupid enough to not only take the interview, but perform as poorly as doreen did, it's hard for me to not think doreen was a corporate plant to discredit anyone criticizing the modern corporate workplace, labor market, etc

2

u/carbonated_venom Jan 27 '22
