Youtube's engagement based algorithms have way, way too much influence over the direction of global politics.

I am with my dad and uncles this weekend, all pushing 70 or over. Listening to these old farts complain about self-checkouts, black people and gay people on tv and politics is mindnumbing.

I love them, but they are all racist, sexist, homophobes.

This so much. I went onto YouTube in incognito mode looking for some music that I couldn't remember the name of and didn't want my account getting overrun with music suggestions.

The first video to come up on the YouTube home page was a PP propaganda video. I thought that was odd, obviously YouTube knows I'm Canadian but why is that the first thing I see? Scrolling down there were two more PP videos.

169

u/videobones Oct 06 '22

I've recently become very aware of how different two people's algorithms can be, and after getting a glimpse of some of the stuff an older relative watches, it really worries me. For all we heard growing up about never knowing who you're talking to online, being careful with your info and not trusting websites, the older generations have completely backpedaled on their own caution and have zero critical thinking about the kind of stuff they're being shown online. It really scares me and I don't think people are really taking the vulnerability of older internet users as seriously as we should be.

14

u/grindamnfaygo Oct 06 '22

My Grandma is constantly watching videos about how terrible Meghan and Harry (but especially Meghan) are. I asked her why, and she says that's all Youtube shows her. Fixed that shit in a hurry.

She's 78, born in Detroit, and the only time she's gone overseas was when she was in the navy. Not sure how she even got stuck in that hole.

3

u/marshymell0 Oct 06 '22

How to you fix it? Is there a way to reset the YouTube algorithm?

12

u/grindamnfaygo Oct 06 '22

You can go into Google's privacy settings and turn off a lot of tracking options, one of those being what videos you've watched on youtube. She no longer has a curated Youtube, but on the other hand, she no longer has a curated Youtube, you know what I mean?

https://myaccount.google.com/data-and-privacy

4

u/grednforgesgirl Oct 07 '22

You can go in an delete specific videos from your watch history (within YouTube, not your internet history), for one. And you can turn off all tracking, or you can turn it into something relatively harmless by watching a bunch of stuff like lofi or nature videos or crafting videos or whatever to redirect the algorithm. If you do the latter though you've got to keep on top of it and be sure to delete any videos from your history that you might have watched that could lead down the radical rabbit hole. Although if you saturate it enough you should be good for a long while. But if you accidentally stumble upon anything way off base it can fuck it back up again. So I'm not entirely sure this would be the best strategy for grandma unless you're prepared to keep on top of it yourself (just having their login saved to your personal devices could help you go through it regularly I suppose).

(I use this strategy myself as it helps me keep it clean of the click baity crap, and all I ever really use YouTube for anyway is to play background music on my TV or watch tutorials or excersize videos. I steer clear of any game-related or political content because that leads you down the batshit insane algorithm faster than you can blink)

Every single relative of mine that has been scammed or defrauded online had at one point warned me vigorously of the dangers posed by the internet.

5

u/greenstapletree Oct 07 '22

So I did some reading after my grandma got scammed and it turns out that one of the first things to go when dementia starts is is your ability to tell when someone is lying. Scammers know this and it's a big reason older folks get targeted so hard. They are also often incredibly lonely and having anyone to take to is nice.

6

u/AidanAmerica Oct 07 '22 edited Oct 07 '22

I think it has to do with how they were raised in a world where you could generally trust TV to tell you something mostly rooted in reality. There are rules for what you can say on TV (and there’s fewer now than ever before) but there are no rules for what you can say online. The only thing content producers are incentivized to care about are clicks and views.

In the US, where I’m from, the same as much of the world, rapidly switched from TV being our primary news source to now primarily getting information from the web, making the distinction between actual television and web video basically just a technical one. The law hasn’t caught up to this yet. If anything, lawmakers have encouraged this process by deregulating the communications industry and refusing to regulate new developments.

I’m not sure why YT thinks I would enjoy Jordan Peterson

Youtube does not know whether or not you would enjoy a Peterson moment. They just keep a count of which videos keep users on the platform for one more video. He and others in that same vein of contrarian speakers are very good at milking multiple clicks out of their target audience AND hate-watch/anger clicks from his "anti-audience". It's a safe bet that you will watch more than one if you finish the first one.

I’m not sure why YT thinks I would enjoy Jordan Peterson as much as it does

It doesn't think you'll enjoy Jordan Peterson.

It thinks Jordan Peterson will get a response and get you to keep engaging with the platform; whether that's for positive or negative reasons doesn't matter for them - but negative engagement is a lot easier to drive, so this is where we end up.

I watch recreational shooting and gaming content on youtube.

Then I get recommended a humorous video where someone splices Jordan Petersen saying stupid shit into the little video window in Red Alert 2.

For the next several weeks after that, I started to notice a major uptick of right wing, woman-hating garbage in my feed, and it's just like, oh dang, this is how someone gets radicalized by the algorithm.

4

u/PedanticPendant Oct 07 '22

Tap the "..." button next to any recommendation you don't like and say "Not interested" or "Don't recommend channel". I've personally done it to half the videos on my homepage in one swoop to clean up my recommendations. Really useful feature.

3

u/Rook_Defence Oct 07 '22

Yes, I've done that to a lot of channels for various unappealing benign or aggravating attributes. I think in this case there was just so much bad content Youtube wanted to show me that it took a while for the platform to finally accept that I was rejecting it all.

What's the solution?

  • Regulation?
  • Social media blackout?
  • Doing nothing and expecting a different outcome?
  • Education? And waiting 15 years for it to have an impact?

161

u/seventeenflowers Oct 06 '22

As I understand it, Facebook had a solution, but refused to implement it because it would make them less money. Figure out what that solution is, and legislate it into existence.

Regulation?

Impossible to do without being accused of tyranny, as we can see in practice with the current government's attempts to control internet content.

18

Regulation?

Impossible to do without being accused of tyranny, as we can see in practice with the current government's attempts to control internet content.

Well, we could start by introducing consumer-friendly privacy laws to limit the amount of data content providers can collect and share, including monetary fines for non-compliance (like GDPR) . Hit them in the money maker, so to speak.

Not a total solution but it would be way more effective than any of the half-assed and poorly conceived censorship laws politicians keep trying to push.

i mean. unless its turned into a mutated mess, my understanding of MGTOW from that period of time was dudes who got sick of the rat race of dating, and just decided they were not going to participate. just focusing on friends and hobbies and working.

Basicly becoming Voluntarily celibate. where as the more hardline "redpill/blackpill" groups actively hated women for not dating them.

i also think there was some contingent of MGTOW that was just against marriage or longer serious relationships? i dunno. its been a long while.

42

u/isthisregrettable Oct 06 '22

Definitely mutated. The subreddit had multiple posts with hundreds to thousands upvotes saying “repeal the 19th” (the American amendment giving women the right to vote). Compared to incel groups, which hate women for not dating them, a lot of MGTOWs seemed to not date women because they already hated women.

171

u/OneWhoWonders Oct 06 '22

MGTOW was banned on Reddit for inciting hate against women.

So, it was bit more than just not participating in the rat race, focusing on friends and hobbies, etc.

44

u/wet_suit_one Oct 06 '22

Where it started (when I was familiar with it, it was fairly benign) and where it ended up (I have no idea. I first heard about mgtow in 2007 or so) are likely two very different things.

→ More replies

32

u/AlmostScreenwriter Oct 06 '22

I mean, maybe this will be a controversial take, but I think the reason it inevitably went that way is because there is something inherently unhealthy about believing that not dating/celibacy (voluntary or involuntary) involves the opposite gender as a whole. I've know plenty of single guys who didn't need a community to talk about the "rat race" or discuss women like they're a different species.

26

u/Spite-Funny Oct 06 '22

Any group that gets together to talk about a lifestyle based on not liking something typical seems to go that way. For example: Child Free is fucking toxic and I say that as someone who has no kids (by choice). Maybe just because the people who could be good at supporting aren't really in need of a place to constantly talk about how life is fine, so it gets overwhelmed by people who need to convince themselves of their rightness ... usually by insisting anyone with different view is wong

It would be interesting to know. The incel community was originally started to help incels too.

This is pretty much correct, with the addition that they would also not shut the fuck up about women. It was basically a meme for a while that they needed to just "go their own way already." I also remember reading posts about avoiding interacting with women in general -- like female cashiers, etc. The whole thing was really bizarre and morphed into some extremely unhealthy and obsessive behavior.

Just like incels were created out of a place of care and a good place. It turned dark.

MGTOW has morphed into "Sigma Males".

23

28

u/GimmickNG Oct 06 '22

It reminds me of how Ben Shapiro tried to dismiss his involvement with his videos when pressed about it in his infamous interview with Andrew Neil. Andrew Neil asked him why he titled his videos "Ben Shapiro DESTROYS...." and Ben tried to shrug it off as "someone else made those videos, they're not my own" in order to get the heat off him.

To nobody's surprise though, those videos were actually his (i.e. published under his account), and he effectively dodged responsibility by lying. Even if we assume that his account is controlled by an intern (which is a fair assumption), it still means that he approves of the content since it's published in his name.

For Poilievre to do it himself, it means that he is trying to have his cake and eat it too, by pretending the tags aren't approved by him...although he is clearly in a position where he should know otherwise.

Unwanted celibacy is linked to hostility towards women, sexual objectification of women, and endorsing rape myths

We need to start a bingo card of all the things the Poilievre is going to claim to know nothing about over the next few years.

This is why we need legislation that political ads, websites, and social media content must keep a record of the profiling or targeting parameters used (and that these records should be made available via an access to information request).

The public has a right to know who a party is promoting itself to.

25

u/kamomil Ontario Oct 06 '22

We need media literary education in health classes in schools.

7

u/JohnBrownnowrong Oct 06 '22

That already exists but it's hard to compete against multibillion dollar industries that will do anything for profit. That's why things like subliminal advertising that has been around since the 1950s was regulated. Even with education and awareness you won't actually know.

The thing that is extra disgusting about this is that it leads to more of the same "RedPill" type of content being pushed on vulnerable young men. Someone who goes to the CPC or PP youtube channel will be picked up by Youtube as having an interest in more misogynistic content and it will be put in front of them.

It's serving to promote not only PP's videos but the sort of content that includes people joking about raping a politicians wife.

Edit: Shoutout to the PP supported by incel that’s so upset by this criticism they felt a need to send a suicide report.

23

u/TheRC135 Oct 06 '22

The algorithm is relentless, too.

I generally only use Youtube for hobby related stuff, and high quality educational content like the stuff produced by PBS. Accidentally click one stupid conspiracy theory video because the description makes it it look similar to the sorts of good educational content I enjoy, however, and similar low-quality, misinformed and misleading shit will appear in my recommendations for months, often alongside Tucker Carlson clips and similar garbage.

I already know enough about most of of topics that interest me that I can easily filter out inaccurate or misleading content, but the nature of the site's algorithms makes Youtube a very poor resource for kids and amateurs, perhaps even a dangerous one. There's lots of amazing educational content on the platform, but it's mixed in with huge assortments of trash, and the algorithms seem designed to push you towards that trash very, very quickly the moment you show any interest in it at all.

9

u/Sojourner_Truth Oct 06 '22

Yup. If you go check out YT in incognito mode, it takes ONE video that is pushing some bullshit about whatever - women, coronavirus, 5G - for your entire recommendation feed to be chock full of nonsense.

I don't understand what part of the algorithm pushes that shit so heavily over actual good (and factually correct) content. Like I've never gotten Scott Manley, PBS Spacetime, or Numberphile to pop up in the feed when I do that little experiment, it's always the shitheads.

Maybe people that consume bullshit are just that much more likely to actually click recommended videos.

7

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '22

Absolutely. The right is very very good and manipulating online algorithms to boost their content. I often watch lefty Media like Sam Seder and innuendo studios. Great, educated and informative takes on issues with a lefty slant. Know how often YouTube recommends for me other left wing videos? Fucking never. Know how often they recommend Jordan Peterson or Ben Shapiro videos? Every day.

But click on one Joe Rogan video and my feed is flooded with far right content for months.

Putting people into an echo chamber setting them into a bubble of confirmation bias is what all social media has always been. For you and everything you’ve ever Google as well. It’s why vocal minorities (radical left and right) get so much attention.

5

u/ripaceharding Oct 06 '22

Define “radical left”, please. What sort of things do they support? What politicians best represent their views?

45

u/p-queue Oct 06 '22

This isn't about some vague social media algorithm creating a toxic echo chamber on its own. This is an intentional action from someone who wants to run our country. Fingers should rightly be pointed.

This is extra fucked up because of how this'll shift the recommended videos of anyone who watches these videos. If youtube has any reason to think you're interested in far-right content it's all you'll see and its next to impossible to fix this. I've heard from people who watched a handful of far-right videos out of curiosity having to create a new youtube account because months later they were still getting recommended far-right content.

7

u/whateva1 Oct 06 '22

I clicked on one video on Youtube, and the next day my feed was full of conspiracy videos. It only took one day to fix though, I just clicked on each one and said "not interested" and then my feed went back to video games and music content.

It was quite shocking how quickly they put me in that echo chamber though!

8

u/TenTonApe Oct 06 '22

It was quite shocking how quickly they put me in that echo chamber though!

There's been multiple investigations into this on platforms like Youtube, Facebook, and TikTok. Showing even the slightest conservative leanings gets you into dangerous conspiracy and far-right content shockingly fast. You were lucky/smart to get on top of that quickly.

The Conservatives only path to governing is through non-voters - which means he needs to engage the people angriest with the system.

There's zero attempt to engage the center or the left now.

Alex Jones was cheering him on the other day - don't expect Poilievre to denounce it. It's the whole strategy.

26

u/Vandergrif Oct 06 '22

I think it's worth remembering that the CPC's first success came from Harper courting moderates (and also the Liberal party imploded, but we'll focus on what Conservatives actually have control over). The CPC very much can have a path to govern by being a sane and reasonable party, the problem is nobody is going to trust them to be that now that they've gone all in on the Alex Jones' and the like of our eligible voters.

This is like saying nothing changed when Harper beat the Liberals. This is verifiably untrue. We lost standing in the global stage, lost UN spots, social programs were cut harming many people, etc.

I’m not saying the liberals are perfect. They suck and I’m not a fan of Any political party. But to act like there is no difference is just factually untrue and not supported by any data.

If Trudeau lost and conservatives held power, we wouldn’t have gotten legal weed. We wouldn’t have gotten through Covid as well as we did, etc. not to mention we likely wouldn’t be respected globally for our work helping our refugees.

This is conservatism in the 21st century. It's a living fossil. It has no answers to the questions posed by a modern, democratic nation situated in a globalized economy.

So this is what it offers.

20

u/AVeryMadLad2 Alberta Oct 06 '22

Yeah an ideology based on “let’s keep things mostly the way they are” doesn’t work when there’s a looming climate catastrophe on the horizon, the wealth gap has grown into a vast chasm, housing prices are out of control, wages have utterly stagnated for years, and cost of living is constantly on the rise. Very little about Western style liberal democracy is working right now and it seems most people have realized, that’s why everyone is becoming so polarized and turning to these out-there ideologies. Fascism, socialism, anything but the status quo.

And the CPC (and Liberals) are the party of the status quo.

14

u/[deleted] Oct 06 '22

Fuck.

3

u/Phaze_Change Oct 07 '22

The progressive part of PC was just a mask to appease the overwhelmingly socially liberal vote in Canada. But since Trump conservatives have gone mask off and don’t even try to hide it. Trump empowered the racists and bigots.

Hopefully Canadians see through the nonsense. However, that would probably also mean yet another JT win. And he’s already served his purpose. We desperately need term limits in Canada. I don’t think any party that has ever served more than 2 terms has ever done anything good for us.

Not to sound alarmist, but this is very similar to how the Trump playbook started. I truly have high hopes for Poilievre, but also worry about the decay of decency and democracy under his banner. Trump's famous first words were "Grab'em by the *****" and everyone laughed it off as locker room talk. 6 years later amd a stacked court just retracted abortion rights. It turns out those initial comments weren't so innocent after all...

It can happen quickly. It can seem innocent enough. Death by a million cuts is still death.

And while I recognize that we have different and (hopefully) stronger checks and balances in Canada to prevent this slide to tribalistic politics, I believe we need to take a stand early and often against this and similar incendiary language.
