The man is fighting back against a lot of the homophobia still present in hiphop, i say that's a great thing, besides if straight people get to sing about having sex , gay people get to sing about having sex too

2

u/Miennai Jan 31 '22

Fair. Similarly, I can't stand songs that throw in sexual themes when they are otherwise not at all sexual. Example, Are We There Yet by Dumbfounddead. Verse 1 is him getting really heart-felt about the risks his mom took immigrating to the US with him and his sister and what a champion she is for building a life for them from basically nothing.

Second immediately goes "Shawty was a 10, she was chillin' with her friends..." and eventually goes to kinky sex with choking and hair pulling.

Like, that's so gross. After that first verse, it feels like his mom is still in the room. Yuck. Sometimes I'll put that song on and turn it off after the first verse.

What's this "EQUALITY" you speak of?! I say sir.... farewell a good day to you!

24

u/therealpaterpatriae Jan 12 '22

I mean, the majority of straight people don’t give a shit that it’s about gay sex. Hell, I listen to songs about sex sung by women. The music we listen to doesn’t always reflect our interests. I listen to songs about doing coke and killing people, but I don’t do coke nor do I have any desire for violence. Just makes it a little awkward if it comes up during your turn at karaoke, that’s all.

5

u/MeanBird88 Jan 12 '22

I will emphatically sing a song about things I have never done/will never do. Or if the lyrics don't suit the gender. But if Josh Homme is going to tell me that he is gonna blow his load over the status quo then I'm gonna sing my heart out, like I'm trying to win a Grammy.

Fuck off stfu

6

u/_EclYpse_ big pp gang Jan 12 '22

I'd argue that promoting a company that actively exploits working conditions (illegally), steals thousands of designs from smaller fashion designers, and actively harms the environment incredibly much, furthermore claims to be environmentally friendly while below 0.1% of the sortiment is produced under environmentally friendly conditions, that operates from China MIGHT, just MIGHT be a bit of a different story than promoting a random company :)

I fucking love that man’s album

11

u/LilBits1029384756 Jan 12 '22

i would say that im pretty indifferent to them. Half of it is because im there for the fire songs not the music video, but the other half of my reasoning is because its not like im repulsed in any way by the music video. Like if i were to see it I would click away basically immediately, but not because “OMG thats so disgusting”, but more like that “this isn’t entertaining to me and I’d rather be doing other things”. The music vid isn’t going to make me not like the song, and thats a problem i see when people talk about lil nas; “his videos are weird/gay, so i suddenly don’t like the music anymore”.

8

u/64145aling Jan 12 '22

That’s me with all the straight hip hop artists hyper-sexualizing women in their music videos

Keep in mind that Lil Nas X’s lyrics are also fairly PG compared to straight artists. The double standard is frustrating

68

u/DefNotAK Jan 12 '22

Its not a double standard at all lmfao. You can not wanna listen to songs about women if your gay nobody cares. There is litterally nothing wrong with not wanting to listen to something you dont agree with.

There IS something wrong with shaming and trying to call ppl out on some dumb shit because you cant just let people dislike what they dislike without taking some wierd ass high grounded offense to it.

You have the right to pick and choose your music without having to explain shit to anyone. Everyone elses opinions dont matter.

Same. I enjoy the videos as well, dude's just living his best life and you can really see the fun he has in making them. At the same time, massive kudos to him for not caring about the backlash of being gay THAT openly.

Was Missy Elliott getting the same backlash with her songs when she started with female explicit lyrics? Seems like a shame. I'll enjoy her stuff any day of the week, and if I know the lyrics I'll sing along as well.

Instead of fading into obscurity like so many other artists, he realised you can be successful and profitable by using his sexuality to get clicks. He is one of the few artists out there who understands how the internet and memes work lmao

What’s wrong with singing about your sexuality? As someone else states, if straight people can sing about sex LGBTQ+ people can too

I don’t care that he’s gay at all, in fact I listen to so some of his music, but I love music and I pay a lot of attention to the lyrics, I’m sorry I can’t help but feel a little uncomfortable when he’s talking about shooting a child in someone’s mouth while riding, and I understand it’s the same thing with women but I don’t listen to that as well “.
