Their heads don't tilt fully like his does. If they did, their heads would also bobble more. Therefore, it's the strength/flexibility of the springs that's affecting it.

That's because in most cases it's true. Source: I see it every day with the women in my family. They've all got these toxic mentally abusive boyfriends they keep running back to after they break up.
49
u/Ksradrik 13d ago
Probably because their lifestyle depends on it, its also part of why kids stay with abusive parents, even when they realize how abusive they are.
Living without an income is hell.
55
u/matlynar 13d ago edited 13d ago
You'd be surprised but most women in toxic relationships I've known were also the main provider of income. Sure, having your own money makes you more capable of leaving a toxic relationship, but a lot of them just don't.
Or some who do break up eventually, but the kind of toxic parter remains because it's just what they're attracted to. Or some who didn't break up but actually got dumped by the partner who wasn't doing shit for the relationship.
35
u/AppleSatyr 13d ago
Financial dependence is only part of the equation. Many of those women have had issues in their life that lead to codependency or their abusive partner has successfully manipulated them into codependency
19
u/Kagamid 13d ago
Yeah there's no sense trying to make sense of it. Some people just stay and no one can really explain why without knowing the exact situation which is usually different for everyone.
12
u/donttextspeaktome 13d ago
A lot of people are afraid to be alone. I do thank my ex for that. I was alone so much while I was married, I started liking it far more than actually being with him. I actually got to do all I wanted to do without having to either cajole him into joining me or have him complain the entire time. Divorce was easy after that and here I am in bed on a sunny morning with a crispy breeze wafting in, contemplating where I’m going to go for brunch simply because I feel like it.
12
u/spagbetti 13d ago
Fear. It’s fear.
I was once hanging out with a friend in a waiting room at a court house for those seeking a protection order from domestic violence. It was filled wall to wall with women.
over the course of 2 hours I watched 12 women lose their nerve and run out of there because they felt they were going to anger their ex (by legally forcing him to stay away from them) and he would hunt them down and kill them.
And that isn’t an irrational fear. Police actually do very little for anyone under a protection order.
It’s often putting gasoline on the fire and add a healthy dose of fear on top of that…it’s a perfect cage.
Some women will reason within their mind that this is ok…they can endure it alone. And really do feel they are all alone and they don’t have power of decision. Because often they Don’t. complacency of fear to stay will outweigh the fear of leaving.

u/KikiKittystein 13d ago
I was the only provider of income in my abusive relationship. I didn't leave because the motherf'er would sleep with my keys between his legs. He would also get up in the middle of the night and drain all the money out of my account as soon as it went in. I keep hoping to be sent his obituary some fine day.
6
u/Enough-Might 13d ago
Some of the dynamic is that successful career women have come up seeing that hard work results in success, often working harder at something than the others around you or in less than supportive environments (in fields where women are underrepresented especially). That can be maladaptive for a relationship that is toxic or unhealthy—the default response is to simply work harder (with a partner that is not working very hard at it or at all) rather than step away.
I think women also still tend to be socialized more than men to make things ok interpersonally.
And there’s also the cycle of intermittent positive reinforcement that can make women feel the allure or false promise of the good moments of a relationship.
Lots of reasons aside from financial dependence making it hard for women to leave abusive situations, though financial dependence is certainly one of the scenarios, one that makes it important to fund women’s shelters and legal aid help.
→ More replies→ More replies5
u/MrWoohoo 13d ago
It’s really more a matter of codependency. For some people their biggest fear is being abandoned so they have this “I’ll put up with anything as long as you don’t leave me” approach to relationships.

The women that married my childhood friends all fit that model, bc that drama gives them something interesting to be a part of & it makes them feel important. Took a couple decades of conversations to distill that, but there it is. People want to feel needed and important, and nothing fulfills that like leashing yourself to a big snarling dog, even if half the time it bites you.
15
u/WorldsBestArtist 13d ago
I actually had an ex girlfriend tell me that she thought our relationship wasn't working out because we didn't argue enough. I just can't bring myself to have drama just for the sake of drama.
She must be much happier in her new relationship because she is constantly complaining about her new man on facebook.

Song title is Encounter by Stefanie Sun Yan-Zi (孫燕姿 - 遇見), a Singaporean singer.
This is the theme song for a Hong Kong movie called 向左走·向右走 (Turn Left, Turn Right) a romcom, which was filmed in Taiwan. I remembered liking the song because of the movie too.
I think it's fitting for this because I think the movie was about fate. Maybe it's a good time to re-watch since that movie was 20 years ago XD

A very memorable song for consumers of Mandopop/Taiwanese media two decades ago. Stef Sun became a queen of Mandopop for a reason (her music doesn't all sound like generic Mandopop love ballads - more like self-exploratory Western-influenced singer-songwriter piano-pop). I'm surprised this song got used in this music box though, lol.

My father had a plastic version of this--it was bigger and round and had seven girls in red and blue dresses (this was back in the 1960's). It played the tune "You Can't Be True, Dear." He'd play it for us sometimes after dinner--we loved it. I spent years looking for one and found a smaller version with a little white dog that I adore. My grandkids think it's hilarious, too. https://imgur.com/a/QIFUJn1
