There is something in a dry "git!" that is peak comedy for me and I have no idea why

"Go on, git!"

161

u/suestrong315 Oct 06 '22

It was the git that ties this all together

69

u/BorgClown Oct 06 '22

The git that keeps on gitting.

3

u/deborahawe Oct 06 '22

underrated comment

10

u/LordSlack Oct 06 '22

a Git Hub if you will

59

u/butch81385 Oct 06 '22

My mom always said she wanted to open a store called "Get your shit and git" just because she thought it was a funny name. I agree.

77

u/orange_supremacy Oct 06 '22

Git actually means "Go" in Turkish lol

57

u/batchyscrumhole Oct 06 '22

I read it as 'get' as in get lost.

Go on, git! - Is like something you'd shout at a cat to stop shitting on your lawn or something in Scotland

91

u/Spork_Warrior Oct 06 '22

It's also classic hillbilly/redneck in the US with Git purposely misspelled to make it look more hick-like.

19

u/OliviaWG Oct 06 '22

Can confirm, I grew up in the Ozarks. We used to have a chain of gas stations called Git n Go. They have since been replaced by Kum & Go...

12

u/showerbeerbuttchug Oct 06 '22

From Ozarks, still call that chain Ejaculate & Evacuate.

Stupid question, misspell of what?

50

u/SnowHawk12 Oct 06 '22 edited Oct 06 '22

A misspelling of get because when a Hillbilly says, "go on, get" their pronunciation of it makes it sound like git, so in writing a character who is a Hillbilly you would utilise git in place of get to emphasise that fact.

26

u/-bigmanpigman- Oct 06 '22

Ohh,I git it.

16

u/HansGruberWasRight1 Oct 06 '22

Grandfather was a sharecropper; no word motivates stupid cattle and dogs like a solid, heavy-timbered "Git!"

12

u/hypermark Oct 06 '22

Grew up on a dairy farm. Can confirm. Animals know "git" means git to gittin'!

6

u/srrymydog8yrtwinkie Oct 06 '22

I think you can only spell it 'git' when it's a command to go away.

11

u/ukelele_pancakes Oct 06 '22

Get, as in "get out"

4

u/babysharkdoodoodoo Oct 06 '22

Arh. That helps.

3

u/MonkRome Oct 06 '22

Probably "get out", "get gone", "get moving" all in one, I would say it's contextual.

This right here, friend, lol. Gotta say it like that or it doesn't sound right. Like an old 1800's prairie man.

5

u/DilettanteGonePro Oct 06 '22

This is a deep cut, but if you can find John Oliver's standup show (comedy central I think) from 10 ish years ago and watch the episode with Rory Scovel, you will not regret it

5

u/mintBRYcrunch26 Oct 06 '22

I always get a laugh out of my husband when I say it to the cats, “Go’on GIT!”

3

u/parabolicurve Oct 06 '22

'Git' in UK is a slur. I guess for a US comparison, it would be 'dick'. Or 'asshole'.

2

218

22

Was out doing a GrubHub order the one day and someone had gnomes, one held up a sign that said " GO AWAY " I sent the person a text with the picture of his food with the gnomes and said I left it there with them.

22

u/heisenchef Oct 06 '22

I read that as "GitHub" order and was so confused.

6

u/Sindef Oct 06 '22

I guess you could consider GitHub issues to be orders, in a way.

15

u/MarcOfDeath Oct 06 '22

3

u/Mr_Killgrave Oct 06 '22

22

u/Volde_Snort Oct 06 '22

fork off git would fit as well.

6

u/yeags Oct 06 '22

It would be lost on non coders, though. Imagine having to explain it to every person that comes to your door and asks about it.

3

u/Volde_Snort Oct 06 '22

I imagine someone who is a massive nerd would find a lot of joy in explaining that haha.

2

u/handlebartender Oct 06 '22

Many years ago I had kicked off a request to fork a repository on GitHub.

What popped up gave me a giggle: Hardcore Forking Action

Emailed it to myself. Managed to find it again:

https://i.imgur.com/plpnuii.png

I don't think I've seen that in quite some time with subsequent repo forks.

2

u/t3hOutlaw Oct 06 '22

Anyone from the UK sees it this way.

3

u/the3percentdid Oct 06 '22

Go away, go on git! Are you white fanging me?

12

u/RainbowandHoneybee Oct 06 '22

Confusing impression. Lovely flowers and doormat gives the feel of welcome, except for the message by the door. I wouldn't knock on this door.

40

u/Riptastic Oct 06 '22

I wouldn't knock on this door.

Then the sign is doing its job.

The lovely flowers and doormat are for the owners, not visitors.

7

u/blackspike2017 Oct 06 '22

If you turn the sign around it says WELCOME.

6

u/Fe_Mike Oct 06 '22

And you rang the doorbell anyway, didn’t you?

15

2

2

8

u/wahnsin Oct 06 '22

I understand screen doors in front of regular doors, but glass? Why?

66

u/JustCallMeNancy Oct 06 '22

It's the storm door. Traditionally it's the door that you install your screen into in the summer, but you put glass in during the colder months.

We just keep ours as glass though, because more often than not the weather is too cold, too hot, or too humid to keep the front door open with a screen installed.

35

u/Spork_Warrior Oct 06 '22

Or in my case, we keep the glass in so the dog doesn't push through the screen

9

u/JustCallMeNancy Oct 06 '22

Oh yes, this too. Much easier to wipe of nose marks than replace the whole screen!

7

u/PrawojazdyVtrumpets Oct 06 '22

We have a cat that claws through the "self fixing" screens on our doors and windows. When the guy sold us the windows and doors, he showed us how a "cat claw" (his demonstration used a bent finish nail) could pull on the screen and you take a flat-ish object like a nickel and rub out the hole. It worked in his demo.

Had the screen in 2 days and our void, Ripley (fitting name) clawed her way through it in seconds and was napping in the sun on the porch when I found her.

3

u/PinkamenaDP Oct 06 '22

Or in my case, we don't have a storm door, and we never open the heavy door to let in any light or to be welcoming....

9

u/Null_zero Oct 06 '22

And most here have glass that slides to expose the screen

6

u/thelivinlegend Oct 06 '22

I live in southeast Texas, can confirm, even though the weather sometimes looks nice outside, under no circumstance should it be allowed in the house.

6

u/wahnsin Oct 06 '22

thanks, had no idea

1

u/justarealkoala Oct 06 '22

I thought it was just esthetics! Nice to know it has an actual purpose

1

u/socokid Oct 06 '22

It has absolutely nothing to do with aesthetics. I'm not sure anyone thinks storm doors look better than the actual front doors.

It's simply to allow the front door to be open without letting the elements in at the same time. That's it.

In winter, the glass keeps the snow and cold outside (somewhat), and swapping out the glass with the screen in the summer lets you have a breeze come in through the front door without letting in the bugs.

1

u/justarealkoala Oct 06 '22

Right! Thanks for the thorough explanation. Is it particularly bothersome to swap them?

2

u/HappybytheSea Oct 06 '22

We have one where the glass just slides up to leave the screen, so we don't have to do any swapping over. But the swapping ones usually just lift off easily with little twisting hinges to lock them in place.

1

u/socokid Oct 06 '22

Not at all. Most just have these tabs that you unscrew with your fingers and turn, remove the glass/screen, put in the other, turn the tabs back over swapped glass/screen. They make it as easy as possible.

...

Side note. Just imagine the mentality of someone that downvotes people having a discussion about window screens.

That's amazing and I'm a bit worried for their mental state...

1

u/justarealkoala Oct 06 '22

To be honest no sure what's going on haha! We were both in the red and now back in positive karma. I've stopped trying to understand reddit, but I didn't know window treatment was so controversial

→ More replies

3

u/BananaDick_CuntGrass Oct 06 '22

I know you already have some answers, but to add to it, it's so you can leave your door open to see outside/let more light in, but not the heat or cold.
I have a screen on my glass door that allows me to slide like 1/2 of the glass up, revealing the screen. But where I live, it's too hot for like 5 months out of the year and too cold for about 3 months. So I only use the screen in like March, April, October, November.

14

u/yosemitetrailblazer Oct 06 '22 edited Oct 06 '22

In the southern US they have an accent and dialect. To say, “ Go on git” literally translates to “go on, get it”, but the saying is closer to meaning, “move along, get out of here”.

ETA: check out this US accent expert, it’s a 3 part series but he explains the “git” accent and others: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=H1KP4ztKK0A
