It was the perfect distraction while he got to sneak over to the litter box for a stinky treat (without risk of a sneak claw attack) and then retreat back over to the best spot in the house to nap off the high of his success. That dog has a future in the professional heist biz!

Either that or the dog then goes to a different room, puts its lab coat back on, and thinks "Hmmm, compelling data. Compelling data indeed" and then proceeds to update its excel spreadsheets

Right? When he got into in the first place he was like “these cats seem intrigued must be something good!?” Then when they started to get squirrelly, he was like “imma taking this container with my mouth hand away from them! I know it’s something good.”
After a while he’s like “this is boring af, y’all are weird”

u/k20350 13d ago
Our cats knocked the container of catnip treats off the counter and the container broke. At like 3 AM our one cat walked by and her usually skinny tail was bushed out like a squirrel and she was sketched the fuck out. I was like hmm.... something is definitely up. Then I saw the entire pound of catnip treats strewn across the kitchen floor that they had obviously ate their fill of

Catnip supposedly has a chill, calming effect for dogs. Probably why he went to a lounge spot. It'd also not harmful to them.

Fun fact: catnip lasts about 15 minutes for a cat, and they will be unaffected by further amounts afterwards for about 2 hours. That's why they say to use it as a treat.
Edit: This is literally my most upvoted comment ever and it's about cats. I know I shouldn't be surprised but it's still somewhat funny to me.

And only 50% of cats are affected by it!
255
u/ThrowawayusGenerica 13d ago
But the ones that aren't affected usually get the same effect from valerian instead!
184
57
u/Creepy_Borat 13d ago
But do cats that react to catnip also react to valerian?
86
u/HeyHaveYouNoticed 13d ago
Mine did. The male got super aggro over the valerian, way more than he ever did with catnip. It kind of smells like death so maybe it triggers something primal in them. Honeysuckle bark works for some cats too but from what I've seen it seems way more mellow than anything else.

One of my cats seems to get a bit too wounded on catnip. Acts like an over stimulated cat. Silvervine seems to make her playful without the excessive high. Gonna have to try some of this stuff.

Same here with mine too. Also if I give them some silvervine, watch out neighbors, cause they are doing burn outs till the house comes crashing down.

u/MississippiJoel 13d ago
I've had several cats over the years, and not the first one has taken to the little sample baggies I would get with their toys. Have somehow lost out on the 50/50 odds every time.
I even mixed up the cat's normal food with a whole bunch one time, and it was just sitting in the bottom of his bowl when he finished eating.

Do we know why catnip only affects cats? I know it affects all the bigger feline species too, I wonder if they have certain neuron transmitters?
26
u/NbdySpcl_00 13d ago
Interesting question, I did some googling. The gist of it is that catnip affects a cat as though it were pheromones, and the behaviors caused by pheromones tend to be species dependent.
Apparently sometimes catnip has been proscribed to dogs as a mild sedative but it seems to be more of a "let's see if this works" than a sure-shot treatment, and you need a lot more of the stuff to affect a dog than you do for a cat. It can also cause mild but negative effects - nausea, it seems. There's anecdotal evidence that it helps a colicky human baby -- this controversial and there's definitely experts who say do NOT give catnip to human babies.
15
u/SYNTHLORD 13d ago
How do you give catnip to a baby anyway, have the baby sniff if and roll around in it, and zoom around the house at 3am?
5
u/NbdySpcl_00 13d ago
Lol.. it sounds like they make it into a tea.
https://www.amazon.com/Secrets-Tea-Through-Believe-Product/dp/B0766589CK/
Shrewd customers will see on the packaging that the stuff is, thankfully, caffeine free.
5
u/10secondhandshake 13d ago
there's definitely experts who say do NOT give catnip to human babies.
Never would've thought I'd read this sentence.
16
u/Derpy_Guardian 13d ago
It's because of an oil called neptalactone, which causes cats to have an endorphin reaction. Essentially, it triggers a natural high. While it can actually act as a mild sedative for people, the differences in our brains and the way our olfactory senses work mean that it won't trigger the same response.
6
u/burritosandblunts 13d ago
I burned a full joint of fresh catnip flowers I grew. It's not the same as weed but there was most definitely an effect.
→ More replies7
u/molecularmadness 13d ago
You're much better off making a tea of it. It's mildly relaxing and tastes nice if you like chamomile-type herbal flavours.
9
u/chadbarrett 13d ago
I don't believe that... Because I've seen cats get high for quite some time off of it.

is catnip like actually dangerous? It's always described as like a straight up drug, an upper that makes them go wild etc etc etc
is there a real addiction aspect to it or something that will lead to health issues through regular exposure?

Studies have not shown that it's addictive or dangerous. The most that happens is that frequent consumption can lead to tolerance.

We have obviously since moved the container out of reach of any of the animals. I did not know the dog was capable of unscrewing a cap like that! There is a longer video (1 minute) on my profile you can see him actually throw it on the ground after he unscrews it
Edit: if you liked the above gif you may find this one funny too. (When I originally posted it to reddit it hit number 3 on all!) We have since weighed down the cat tree. https://youtube.com/shorts/iifRyW1b5cg?feature=share

u/Scrimshawmud 13d ago
It’s good to know, especially if you’re in a duplex or townhome. I have two dogs and one is deaf - the other is a chihuahua. Figured they’d be fine together while I’m out - I work from home so it’s never too long. Once, I forgot something while on my bike and circled back, and found they were both barking like mad. Evidently the deaf one gets triggered by sunlight flickers and barks, which sets off the little one and the deaf one sees her bark and goes crazy barking too. But if the deaf one can’t SEE the other one bark, she doesn’t keep barking. It’s codependent noise, haha. We now separate when leaving.

Dogs can be sneaky like that. When my Aussie was a puppy he was an absolute wild beast of a land shark and we did everything we could to entertain him and keep him out of trouble. He really liked crunching sounds so we put some dried noodles in a water bottle. It worked great for about a few minutes before he unscrewed the lid and we had to take it away from him.

I ordered a catnip toy for my cats. It was delivered on my doorstep in one of those plastic Amazon envelopes while I was out.
When I got home, one of the neighborhood cats had chewed a hole in the bag, trying to get at the toy. Luckily, it was still there, because it's Jazmin's favorite toy now. Good catnip.

There was a small bag of catnip, from a toy, sitting in my cabinet for almost a year. One day my cat decided it was the day to learn to open the cabinet and pull it out. I came home and he was just sprawled out on the floor, covered in cat nip, living his best life.

My wife thought it would be fun to grow catnip at the farm. She ran a tiller line four foot wide on the property, almost half the length of the road beside it. Planted a fuckton. 300'+, she must have spent $200 in seeds. She covered it with hay then after a good rain, it grew. And grew, and grew, lol.
By August it had attracted every cat within a couple miles it seemed. When you drove by there was always 4-5 you could see rolling in it. Different ones too. It lasted about 5 years before it went back to its natural state.
A bunch of cats got stoned those years.
