I will never in my life understand why so many basement warriors desperately wanted Avatar 2 to fail.
(On a semi related note, it was one of the most beautiful pieces of futuristic visual art I’ve ever seen; James Cameron knows what the people want)
→ More replies179
u/ezone2kil Jan 18 '23
I was wowed by the first Avatar's visuals but you gotta admit the story was just Cameron going through the paces. No surprises, no variations. Some even say it's a retelling of the last Mohican.
And avatar 2 is supposed to be more of the same?
On the contrary I went into puss in boots with no expectations thinking it's just a cheap cash grab ala minions but found myself quite entertained. Time well spent with the kids too. The movie is genuinely funny and had some good moments with heart.
Also I love what they did with the animation style and the antagonist was genuinely scary.
52
u/Heheheidiot Jan 18 '23
I haven't seen avatar 2 but the way you contextualize the first is pretty much on point with my personal opinion. Avatar was one of those big for the sake of being big movies, there was nothing that made me want to stay in the world Cameron built. Puss in boots 2 was honestly great and gave me a lot of hope for the upcoming shrek. I didn't like the art direction they went with at first since it was basically a into the spiderverse copy job but after I got over that I really loved it.
→ More replies34
u/UrMomTheDank69 Jan 18 '23
It takes some beats from spiderverse but i dont think its a copy. Spiderverse specifically went into making it look like a comic book and I believe that Puss greatly differentiated from that idea.

I honestly dont mind Avatar 2 being more of the same. The story may be simple but the world building of Pandora is just insanely well done. That alone is already worth my time in the cinema. People do have high expectations of Avatar 2 unlike Puss in Boots, probably a factor to why Avatar's rating drop as well.

Death doesn't normally visit people who are still alive, his whole pursuit of Puss was specifically because he didn't cherish his lives.
Perrito is the opposite of that. He stops to smell the roses, and appreciates life immensely. Death is likely dreading the day he comes for Perrito.

26
u/baylithe Jan 18 '23
For the first 2 weeks a movie is out, we do not get any of the money from box office tickets. It is all concessions. I work at a movie theater that has a full bar and kitchen so we do well with those sales compared to only selling popcorn and nachos. But that is why everything is so expensive. Need to make our money somewhere. But movies like Avatar 2 and Top Gun Maverick that have high volume after 2 weeks are great for us.

I follow a few but it's more a way to filter what I watch. I have followed them long enough I know how their tastes match up with mine. If they really like a film then I probably will as well, and if they hate it I almost always do as well.
So I view them not so much as critics as my own personal film filtering service. They watch all the films for me and then tell me what is most worth my time. Didn't have to waste time on Babylon or Amsterdam and instead watched The Banshees of Inisherin which I liked quite a bit. A good movie and an interesting metaphor for the 1922-23 Irish Civil War.

Honestly, Avatar is THE movie made for cinema. For me, watching a movie in a cinema is all about the experience, which is one of the best ever with Avatar. Sound and visuals are mindblowing. Sure the story is debatable, but thats not something I need a huge screen and vibrating sound for.
It doesn't matter how good Puss is, I can experience it the same at home as in cinema. And thus it is not worth for me to watch it there.

You should also add both of their budgets to put profits into perspective;
Avatar: The Way of Water budget: $350–460 million USD
Box office total: $2 billion USD
Puss in Boots: The Last Wish budget: $130 million USD
Box office total: $556 million USD
10
u/oscarwildeaf Jan 18 '23
You should also use the correct numbers if you want to put things into perspective. Puss in boots 2 has only made 255 million. That 556 was for the first film. So really it's budget of 90 mill and made 255. I see where you made the mistake tho because even when searching Puss in Boots 2 box office Google immediately throws up the numbers for the first film for some reason.
