125
u/Ididntbreakanyrules Jan 20 '23
It was really cool when you realize that The Man with the Golden Gun was less of a role and more of an exploration of an alternate career path for Lee.
46
u/EskimoDave Jan 20 '23
Alternative? People believe, and the evidence is kind of compelling, that James Bond is based, at least partly, on Lee. His mother married Ian Fleming's uncle. He described playing Scaramanga as playing the dark side of Bond.

The best Christopher Lee story is when he told Peter Jackson how Saruman was going to sound when he died.

I still nailed "Now you may find it inconceivable or at the very least a bit unlikely that the relative position of the planets and the stars could have a special deep significance or meaning that exclusively applies to only you, but let me give you my assurance that these forecasts and predictions are all based on solid scientific documented evidence, so you would have to be some kind of moron not to realize that every single one of them is absolutely true, where was I?"
I could literally feel my brain rewiring to make that old connection. It was like scratching a deep itch that I didn't know I had.

Seriously, I hate the sentiment there are no positive role models for young men. They're absolutely are, instead of looking for one they just take a literal human traffickers word for it.
201
u/Taragyn1 Jan 20 '23
I think the problem is the good honest role models aren’t actively out their trying to lure vulnerable young men into their scams. So the predators out shout the supportive role models in the social media sphere.
→ More replies59
u/MrMontombo Jan 20 '23
A big problem is the internet destroying local communities to an extent. Local communities, actual tangible role models are much more impactful. Unfortunately the internet causes people to retreat inward to an extent, and it allows the grifters that pollute the self help industry to access huge audiences. The pandoras box has been opened, but I think a big part of a better future would be to find ways to foster and grow local communities. Find ways to encourage people to engage and help improve their communities actively, instead of passively.
→ More replies23
u/TheMagicSalami Jan 20 '23
Agreed wholeheartedly on the retreating inward thing. I don't agree with bullying or anything like that by any stretch, but 20 years ago things were different. Take almost any community centered around hate. Proud boys, incels, MGTOW, etc. When I was a kid the internet wasn't as easily accessible for even chuds to be able to find groups that agreed with them and then proceed to validate all their hateful rhetoric. That just makes the "unbrainwashing" harder later. Odds are someone had crappy viewpoints and was mocked/avoided for it and they either learned to hide their crappy views or they could grow. Otherwise they could risk being on the outside socially. Now there's minimal repercussions for someone to be a shitty person online AND they will likely have a forum or a win domain out there that agrees with them. Why grow when you never face bigger consequences?

I think it is both. I’ve tried saying this before, some guys really just need a loud authoritative voice telling them to stand up straight and work harder. You need to hear some else tell you that until you learn to say it to yourself.
But what else is the voice saying? It’s a hard thing if you don’t have an irl person.
43
u/Ancient-Ad4914 Jan 20 '23
I don't think it's that either. I think young men need someone who makes them feel as if someone believes in them.

is the age gap a bit strange? A little bit.
Is it wrong? Not unless you wish to imply 19 year olds are children and incapable of making their own decisions when it comes to consent.
33
u/Somekindofcabose Jan 20 '23
I mean after that henry won't even be near underage actresses because of implications.
Recently he was more professional with Millie Bobbie Brown. Kept her away from his personal life.

Those news articles were really weird though. Like the journalists were really hungry for a story about how he was doing everything wrong and they wanted to catch him in the act. They worded the whole thing like he'd done something wrong. Meanwhile he's doing the exact thing that everyone would expect of him. It just shouldn't have been an article or even a headline. Hollywood vultures gonna vulture.

I'm 29 and a 19-year-old is just an infant to me. Yeah, there are definitely worse things and he doesn't deserve to lose his career over it, but it's also objectively weird for a 33-year-old man to date a woman who just got out of high school and to also say cringe things like, "she protects me from the world" when he was literally already mega famous and she was just a random teenager. I don't have anything against the guy, but also I wouldn't want to be friends with him because obviously we have different outlooks on life and what is and isn't socially acceptable.

Guy was secretly donating tens of thousands to charities every year and got angry when it was leaked. He also got angry when people found out his wife and daughter died because he didn't want pity. And he still manages to be a good person while having millions and being famous. Pretty good role model imo

Nothing wrong with partying hard if you can handle your shit and do so responsibly imo. A lot of people I know will occasionally go hard for a night and then go right back to being a lawyer, doctor, or otherwise contributing member of society. You only notice the people who can’t handle themselves.
12
u/TaffySebastian Jan 21 '23
Oh no, I don't mean that in a negative way, just the stories he tells and from others he interacts with in those interviews, show how hard he goes, he told a story about him gambling in a casino for over 10 hours where he spent 100 dollars and slowly over the hours made over 100k, the room had over 30 people who were all super excited and just going bonkers with him every time he lost money and earned it back, it sounded like he was having a lot of fun.
