Someone's never used a Self Contained Ünderwater Breathing Apparatus.
What's your opinion on Light ayyyymplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation?
1
u/MrDraacon Jan 27 '23
Is it actually pronounced scüba?
2
u/Coffeeman314 Jan 27 '23
Do you say Scahbbah?
1
u/MrDraacon Jan 27 '23
I thought of it as "scooba" until now. I'm not sure if I've ever heard it being actually said
2
u/Coffeeman314 Jan 27 '23
I mean yeah Scuba sounds like scooba, but Underwater isn't pronounced OOnderwater.
1
u/MrDraacon Jan 27 '23
Ah, I see what you mean now. I just got really unsure because of the "ü" there.

Damn, you people don't know your own language 🤯 plus, the creator of it calls it jif.
Your turn MORTAL!!
0
u/erickson666 Professional Dumbass Jan 27 '23
Language and words aren't pronounced solely by what the creator says Words are Said by how the community thinks it should be said
6
u/Michsko04 Jan 27 '23
Y u downvoting? He's right. Another example are Nvidia Graphics cards:
The "ti" at the end of something like an RTX 3080 ti is supposed to be pronounced as "tye" but everyone says "t. i." anyways because the aforementioned one sounds stoopid.

u/Re-Try Jan 27 '23

What about giraffes?
15
u/Weenaru https://www.youtube.com/watch/dQw4w9WgXcQ Jan 27 '23
What about gift?
We obviously cannot use similar words to decide, so we should use another method. The most logical would be to use the same pronunciation as the word that is being abbreviated.
So what does the g in gif stand for? Graphics.

4
u/Re-Try Jan 27 '23
If we follow your logic, that means we have been saying a lot of acronyms wrong.
Laser would be lasser as the A in it stands for amplification, scuba should be scaba as the U stands for underwater, NASA should be pronounced as NaeSA as the A stands for aeronautics.
What I'm going at is that, if a word is not unanimously decided it should be pronounced a specific way, pronounce it however you want. Trying to establish a rule in a language that has very weird rules in it to begin with will just not work.

Bartender: What? Come again?
"Your best gin please!"
0
u/Kysman95 Jan 27 '23
Gin comes from word Ginévre, french for Juniper, read with soft G. "Graphics" has hard G
Try again
4
u/HerculesVoid Jan 27 '23
Gif is an acronym, which doesn't lend its pronounciation from its consistuent words within. Like scuba is usually pronounced 'scooba' not 's-cub-a', and laser is pronounced 'lazer' not 'lass-ear'.
Gif is its own word and even in the dictionary its primary version of pronounciation is 'jif', and even the creator specifically stated he pronounces it 'jif'.
However, the hard g pronounciation is also accepted as an alternative form, and is a second derivitive in the dictionary.
TL;DR GIF is an acronym, so 'graphics' is a childs argument. Both forms are correct, but 'jif' is more correct.

Look, mostly cuz I grew up speaking French more than English, I tend to apply the French language "rules" on some other stuff.
In order to pronounce the G as in "game" in gif In French you you need to put a "u" If it was written "guif" I'll read it like that XDDDDD
Its a matter of how you learned to read it rather than how you supposed to, if that makes sense.

Imma give my two cents: First of all if you ever brought up the word giraffe you're dumb, the word GIFt (with a gif in it because I've seen people miss it) exists, actually I think every words in the english language with the letters GIF in that order are pronounced with a hard G. So every word you may bring up with a soft G is irrelevant.
Second: No you don't say the letters like they are pronounced in the original words, there are shit tons of acronyms where that's not the case.
Third: No, nobody gives a shit about the creator's opinion, if he wanted to have a say he should have done it two decades earlier, not just before dying. That's not how english (or any language) works anyway.
There is no way, no rules, no nothing in english to determine if we should use a hard or soft G and everyone taking this debate seriously is dumb. The only actual debate is who's got the dumbest argument. On that matter I vote for the giraffe argument, grinds my gears the most.

Yup, totally. Because Jraphics Interchange Format makes sense to some weirdos...
0
u/AwakenedHero2277 Sussy Baka Jan 27 '23
It's pronounced "jif" not spelled that way, same as giraffe
2
u/flatcokeedit Jan 27 '23
The "g" in giraffe is followed by a vowel (and is one exception to the rule in English). That's why it's pronounced like a "j".
The "g" in graphics is followed by a consonant, so it would be illogical to be pronounced as a "j". GIF is an abbreviation of these words.
Thoughts?
2
u/AwakenedHero2277 Sussy Baka Jan 27 '23
I guess idk, I honestly tho don't want to get in a huge discussion over weither it's pronounced "gif" or "jif" so I'll just leave it at that
