Yep I work the register sometimes and when I do I usually don't even bother doing this. The time I would save by giving them less bills back is completely ruined by the time I spend waiting for their brain to realize what I'm asking them. The only time I'll ever do this is if we don't have enough 1s to get through the day.

Then again sometimes the customer is smart and focused on the interaction, sees their total, and gives me exact change or enough small bills to where I can give them their paper change in increments of 5. If this is you, I love you. Thank you.

Those pens are worthless. Fake bills just feel wrong because real money has raised ink so it's textured. My check was always the number on the bottom right, as you tilt the bill the color of the number will shift (10s and above). Was a teller at a bank.

I used to remind people who made that joke that there are places that will not take the cash after someone says that. The risk was that if they took it and it turned out to be fake, the person could argue that they told the cashier they made it that morning and get away with it, because the cashier knew it was fake when they accepted it as a trade. It is just a joke that is in poor taste anymore, much like joking about shoplifting.

16

u/DADtheMaggot 13d ago

I think this was funny to me exactly one time. After three or four I stopped even giving a pity laugh. I generally enjoy making a boring job more interesting and fun, but for some reason this specific joke is just very annoying.

u/HunkMuffinJr 13d ago

I proactively give cashiers an excess equal to the ones or tens digits so I don't have to carry coins around all day (diff currency so 1, 5, and 10 are coins). Sometimes it's the cashiers that take a while to think about it though lol.

10

u/FraseraSpeciosa 13d ago

You can say no, and give out change like normal. Cashiers do have some control over the situation unlike what many bosses will say. I’ve been there too. Situations like this could also mean the customer is trying to pull a quick slide of hand scam on you as well. To me it’s just better to keep it simple, and for me, who is slow it’s math, that means giving back the change in the most simple way possible.

Okay, so it's like:

You have 20 in cash. You gotta pay only 11.

Just remember 20 - 11 = 9

Now the cashier asks for $1 and adds it to the 20 to make it 21. The reason is that they could just return the balance as a note of 10, rather than as 9 (or 5$ + 4 1$ bills)

Since 21 - 11 = 10

It's just easier to return the balance as $10

That's happened to me in Europe. I needed to pay 6€ while having 10€ banknote. I gave 10€ and 1€ coin then asked for a 5€. The cashier asked me why am I paying more and started to explain how 6€ is less than 10€ like I don't know about numbers.

139

u/Tulkor 13d ago

huh, here thats totally normal to do to get less coins back... but my country is also still very cash focused so thats probably why

13

u/SelfJuicing 13d ago

totally normal to do to get less coins back

When I was in Southern France, there was a machine to exchange paper bill with coins. At that time I thought I'd need some coins to pay for bus fares so I put a 20€, and it gives me 9 2€ coins. A few moments of confusion later I see the fine prints on the machine saying it takes 2€ for each exchange.

54

u/Asmuni 13d ago

For every cashier who is annoyed at customers not getting it. There's an cashier annoyed at the customers that 'overpay' because they ain't getting it. Just wait for your €4 change in coins and together with your €1 ask if they want to swap it for a €5 bill.

15

u/Tulkor 13d ago

Had this happen at a McDonald's in the US. Assume exactly $16. I gave her $21. "You gave me too much" "Yes I will need change" "But the 20 covers it. You need to take your $1 back."

"I just want a $5."

She handed me my $1 back and a $5.

→ More replies

16

u/GMM_fan 13d ago

Tried to do the same thing at McDonald’s. Gave an extra dollar to get a 5 back instead. The cashier got so confused and called the manager over. Explained to the manager what was happening who also looked confused and just said “we don’t do that kind of stuff here”

47

u/Baumpaladin 13d ago

Daily life is full of unwritten rules that in most cases nobody will explicitly teach you about, rather you often will discover them yourselves, at random. Kind of sad honestly that this stuff isn't part of the general education system, because there is a lot of helpful stuff amongst it.

26

u/Play_with_allan 13d ago

11

It is in the general education system, at least implicitly. But people have the attitude of “why am I learning this, I’ll never need it in real life” rather than “this is an interesting concept, I wonder where I can apply it in my life”. I still don’t understand why people hate story problems so much, that was always a big part of what made math so interesting to me.

It’s so much worse if your the cashier.

I was checking an old lady out. Her total was $14.25, she gave a 20. Then said oh wait I got a quarter, she then handed me the quarter. I stared at her like an idiot for a solid 2 minutes. Brain completely shut down on me

258

u/captsalad 13d ago

Not only that, but people will try to scam you after you've opened the till and confuse you with how much change they should be getting

149

u/8647742135 13d ago

Quick change scam. I don’t blame cashiers for the extra processing sometimes.

46

u/Mammoth_Tard 13d ago

I’ve had to stop and re-count the entire till once because some fuckhead tried to convince me he actually gave me a $20 and not a $10. After figuring it out was the only time I blatantly told someone to get out of the store.

32

u/SiDStvyt 13d ago

Watched this happen to my coworker in real time when i worked at a safety boot store. Store was busy af, sketchy dude comes in to buy something, leaves, then comes back to say that he was shorted change because he gave a $20 and not a $10.. Coworker started to try and count it out, but it was so busy, they said fuck it and gave the dude a $10 bill. We were $10 short at end of shift.

Since then, I learned that when you're dealing with cash and have a busy rush, stick the cash in a separate spot in the register so that you can make it easier to verify, rather than counting the whole register out.

6

u/butt_dance 13d ago

I’ve had someone do this while I was bartending a very busy night. I always take the money, close the check to tell me the change, then look at the bill one more time in my left hand before I put it away and get the change. The guy thought that if he kept arguing with me he’d break my confidence and I’d back down. I didn’t and then he was embarrassed in front of his friends. Asshole.

10

u/foxfyre2 13d ago

Someone tried that on me once when I worked as a cashier. Thankfully I had enough confidence to tell him that I will break/make additional change when I've finished with his first request.

Don't think.

Type in the exact amount she gave you.

Goes faster.

The computer will tell you exactly change.

Speak out loud how much she gave you, right back to her, as you type it in. That can help the customers realize they may be didn't do anything helpful or help them understand how much they gave you.

"Oh, 20.25 it is...and...your change is...$6. Here is $1 and $5 for a total back of $6. Thank you! Appreciate your business."

Train yourself to speak this way and you'll prevent arguments and confusion.

21

u/Unnamedgalaxy 13d ago

This doesn't help when they decide they want throw in change after you've already typed in the original amount given.

10

u/exposarts 13d ago

Just say sorry too late

6

u/dadudemon 13d ago

You can't clear the amount or do you mean after you've registered everything and it spits out the drawer to give them change?

If the latter, that SUCKS. That's the worst possible scenario especially if it is busy. This is what scammers do to try and grt you to miscount, too. So you HAVE to carefully count it.

9

u/ranfur8 13d ago

Or just say "sorry, I already registered the amount that you gave me and I need management approval to make alterations to closed bills"

7

u/dadudemon 13d ago

Good idea.

How much from 4 -> 5 ?

1.

He now asks you for 1 so he can give you these 5.

It isn't a bad place to be and why showers and toilets produce so many creative ideas.

Sometimes i just stare at a blank wall and think of the millions of things that should have been there. But aren't.

I once gave a cashier 24 (my bill was 19) cause I want a 5 back. I could see him freeze and his brain whirl into action for a solid 3 seconds which made me nervous cause I thought I was the one who was wrong. Then he realized it and gave me the change.

I had a roller coaster of emotions for a few minutes.

‘Yes that makes sense’

‘No no no wait’

‘Oh yeah yeah’

‘Na nah nah wait a minute’

‘Hmmm’

u/_Ahad 13d ago

I thought this was common courtesy. Giving the cashier exact amounts, or +some extra money such that the return is full notes This is to save time doing math, and save time counting and exchanging money

u/imagoofygooberlemon 13d ago

I said this in another comment, but its just not something a lot of people learn about or see happening. And esp if they’re younger, its possible they’ve just never interacted with cash enough that its ever come up.

Register does the math for you. Also, idk about overseas, but in America, your total after tax is basically never an even dollar amount.

6

u/dayfaerer 13d ago

No it's not usually an even dollar amount, but $5.76 is easier to give as change than $4.76

Wait do people really not understand this concept ?

130

u/RaghuvamsiMC Chungus Among Us 13d ago

It's not that people don't understand, but instead my brain doesn't realise it immediately and after a few seconds I'll be like "ohh". Atleast that's what I think the meme is about

Often times you'll catch people after work with fried brains from using them all day

It feels like 80% of the people posting here are aliens.

How is this trivial stuff so difficult to grasp?

12

u/Multi_Grain_Cheerios 13d ago

It's just deviation from a standard routine that catches people off for a second. Not that we are too dumb for it.

People that use cash all the time probably have it down as more standard as well as cashiers who spend all day with transactions.

Its trivial to you because you’re familiar with it. The idea of giving someone “more” in order to make easier change just something different that not a lot of people (and esp younger people who don’t interact with cash much) just arent familiar with, so that makes it confusing.

I find the opposite to be true fairly often too.

Total: $11.23

Give: $21.23

Highly confused looking cashier

Cashier: You gave me too much.

Tries to give back dollar and coins

Me: Trying to somehow politely explain the situation so they just plug the numbers into their computer.

Skill issue tbh 💀

5

u/Shepard21 13d ago

I used to be super insecure that I couldn’t count this on the fly, so I forced myself to learn. Just keep your eye on what you gotta pay and do the additions/substractions in your head until you can do it quickly. It really is a skill issue lol.

When I was working the drive thru this always baffled me. Why are they overpaying? We'll just let the register do the math to figure out what fancy change shenanigans they're pulling...

79

u/Sir_Budginton 13d ago

It’s because in this example the change is $9, so that’s a a $5 bill and 4 $1 dollar bills. 5 pieces of paper in total. But if they give an extra dollar then the change will be $10, so the cashier can just give them a single $10 bill as change.

47

u/Aquena71 13d ago

That’s what I’m thinking. So why is everyone confused? Although I am mathematically challenged, I would rather get a $10 bill back than smaller bills.

14

u/Verbindungsfehle memer 13d ago

Ikr. It's jist a win-win. Cash registers are usually short on change and I'd rather go around with less coins with me, too.

It's exactly the same as you were paying with a bill of 21$ (if existed). Maybe the cashier doesn't have enough bills and coins to give you 9$ back, but he/she has a 10$ bill. But the only way to give you 10$ is if you pay 21$. As simple as that.

u/fatguylittleshoes 13d ago

The dollar sign goes before the amount...........

u/flabyblaby 13d ago

I felt the same way. But then dad saw my struggles and sent me to work in a store. And then I learned the ways of the basic addition and subtraction.

It's usually the other way around. I'll give the cashier an extra dollar and they stare at me like I'm the moron.

For all those who are explaining, I’m pretty sure there’s no need for that because we can all agree it’s not rocket science , I think the OP goal was to manifest how our brain processes the situation in those few milliseconds

The correct response is “sure just give me a $5 and 4 $1’s and I’ll give you that 1$ for the $10.”

I'm the opposite and die a little inside every time I give them $21 for $11 and they give me the one back then break the $20 and explain to me how I was dumb and gave them extra. Then I just agree and walk away shaking my head because it's too much effort to explain lol
