What if you declare the island it's own sovereign nation so you don't have to pay tax? Is that a thing?

Who are you declaring the victory to though, yourself? You don't have anybody you need to prove your effectiveness to so false claims of victory only hurt you and your country. You'd have much better results spending that CNN airtime money on plastic AA guns to make countries think twice of an attempted invasion. You're a paper tiger but I think the island covered in plastic anti aircraft guns, bunkers made of only sand, life size plastic army figures and plastic tanks that 96.2% of the time it works 49% of the time. Why spend money trying to convince yourself of your military prowess when you could spend that money convincing other nations of your military prowess. You're the president, the VP, the defense secretary and his dog all at once, start thinking like him/it/them bro

u/frizzykid 7d ago
For real though. If only one person was gonna win the island I was shocked at least one person didn't go for the 50k. I would have taken it.
Also I feel like the 50k would be a lot easier to deal with than an island, even if you were just planning on selling it, who is looking to buy an island?
→ More replies45
u/leJadedJester 7d ago
You can sell it for more than 50k
100
u/frizzykid 7d ago
Of course but you have to find a buyer, and chances are the person who won it is going to want to get rid of it asap to avoid the liabilities of owning an island, or any property, so they're going to be selling it at quite a discount. Who knows what they end up with at the end.
Deep down I kinda think Jimmy didn't actually buy an island. I think he was using one for his video, and gave the winner the dollar equivelant. Seems like a huge liability for him to give someone that for a competition, but he did give away an island before so who knows.
5
u/ccvgreg 7d ago
What's the rundown of liabilities for the average island owner?
5
u/JimothyJollyphant 7d ago
You have to provide enough rocks in case someone is stranded on the island and needs to write HELP on the beach?
6
u/frizzykid 7d ago
I imagine the big one would be taxes. And you probably need insurance too if you own the island so someone doesnt crash onto the island and sue you.
→ More replies→ More replies44
u/JabronyJones 7d ago
Well, considering it looks like the exact same island he "gave away" to one of his friends, I'm pretty sure you're right in that they just gave them the dollar amount of what it's worth.
Either that or he actually owns that island, puts it up as the prize because you legally cannot lie about what you're giving away, and then buys it back from them for what it's worth. I mean, who's gonna say no? The island doesn't come with builders, supplies, transportation to get there and back, functioning facilities, etc. so there's no way some random internet contestant is going to be able to afford upkeep, let alone the ability to build on it.

u/NappaValleyCabbage 7d ago

He said in the video it was “four times larger” than the last one he gave away. For 100 mil of course he would want to play up the size of the island, and what better way than to compare it to something the audience already knows?

u/whatwhynoplease 7d ago
He has investors. He's probably lost a lot of money over the years but he's been building up the audience and the "mrbeast" brand. He will eventually become profitable. Not really a fan of his videos but the way he is building his business is very interesting.
11
u/mrturcot 7d ago
He explains it somewhere and I'm going to butcher this but basically he runs on super thin margins. He blows all his money on a video. Rakes in dough again then rinse and repeat. Started small and his pools of money he gains from each video fund the next one.

Honey is a free browser add-on available on Google, Oprah, Firefox, Safari, if it's a browser it has Honey. All you have to do is when you're checking out on one of these major sites, just click that little orange button, and it will scan the entire internet and find discount codes for you. As you see right here, I'm on Hanes, y'know, ordering some shirts because who doesn't like ordering shirts; We saved 11 dollars! Dude our total is 55 dollars, and after Honey, it's 44 dollars. Boom. I clicked once and I saved 11 dollars. There's literally no reason not to install Honey. It takes two clicks, 10 million people use it, 100,000 five star reviews, unless you hate money, you should install Honey.

The funny thing is, what if you dont have the money to actually go on vacation on that island. What are the monthly taxes and expenses.
Surely the island is not worth keeping.
15
u/TheSuperiorMaker 7d ago
Right. Unless Mr.Beast is paying for all of that the only option is to do what Chandler did and sell it, then use the money to pay the taxes and keep a bit for themselves.
9
u/whatwhynoplease 7d ago
That's what most people do when they win cars on game shows. They need to pay a few thousand in taxes to claim it and most people can't afford that so they just take the cash value.
→ More replies2
u/frizzykid 7d ago
Not sure if I believe Mr beast actually bought the island or just is giving them the cash equivelant. Maybe he did but I think most peoples first instinct would be to sell it.
96
u/Aradhor55 8d ago
Exactly my reaction. What the Fuck would I do with an empty Islande and.no way to get there myself
79
u/Epic-Glacier 8d ago
Sell it? Pretty sure someone said they would do that in the video itself
39
u/Aradhor55 8d ago
Yes in theory. But where do you go for that ? To the island market ? I guess they got in touch with people for that kind of things but if not, that's a lot of trouble
67
u/femboys-enjoyer 8d ago
This article says 300 islands are sold every year to private buyers, so it seems like there is an island market lol.
27
u/Aradhor55 8d ago
Of course there is a market that's not what I meant. Let's say I suddenly got an island. Cool but now what ? Where do I get to sell it ? Who do I call ? There's probably some kind of procedure, things to do, legal documents to provide I don't know.
But as I say, I'm sure MrBeast as a team for that and that the winner got in touch with lawyer and people like that to reach out for question, or sell it. I hope he does at least !
28
u/idiotdroid 7d ago
The whole thing is a hassle lol.
Instead of a briefcase full of money, or a simple check, you now have to sell a fucking island.
I wonder how much is spent in taxes and how much is spent hiring people to sell it for you.
Win a multimillion dollar island, sell it and end up with maybe a few hundred grand. Better than nothing, but I its funny the hoops you go through to get your money in this scenario lol.
11
u/ShinyGrezz 7d ago
I mean, if you think for more than 3.2 seconds you’ll probably realise that the whole “island” thing is because if MrBeast gave away a briefcase full of cash in every video, his videos would probably be a lot less popular.
3
u/idiotdroid 7d ago
Yeah I totally get that.
Someone else pointed out that he usually just offers to just give the cash value at the end anyway to the winner.
→ More replies30
u/RandomaccountB 7d ago
I’d be surprised if he doesn’t buy it back - he did the same with the chocolate factory. They “won it” for the video but at the end he offered to swap them for a briefcase full of cash. Think he’ll probably just do that off camera this time.
14
u/Alnilam_1993 7d ago
It's expensive, but not hard: www.privateislandsonline.com
4
u/Aradhor55 7d ago
It says there that to sell your island you need to pay, with a starting price of 140USD/month. Doesn't seems easy to me ! You get back your money when it's done tho but before that...
8
u/Bubbanol 7d ago
I mean, if the island is worth millions than $140/month is chump change. When all said and done it'd be better to win cash but 'Winning an island' is part of the marketing which gets views and pays for it.
3
u/Bubbanol 7d ago
I dont think it'd be that hard. You reach out to an estate agent who does the leg work. But yeah, I would hope that they at least are like, "Here are some contacts if you want to sell it"
2
u/fma891 7d ago
Jimmy isn’t an idiot. I’m sure if the person who won the challenge doesn’t want to actually use the island, he will just buy it from them for like a hundred thousand or something. His brand as a generally nice/wholesome guy would be damaged if he just abandoned the winner of an island without giving them options for what to do with it.
