You mean, like it always has?
I don't understand shit what either japanese or koreans are saying, but both J- and K-pop be slammin'
Edit: stop explaining to me the difference between japanese and korean. This comment was just stating that both countries make music that slaps.

u/dashinny Jan 26 '23
This is Korean ballad and as a Korean I believe we like to differentiate between Kpop, which is more about marketing pop music and boy/girl groups as idols
16
u/BimBamZimZam Jan 26 '23
This comment was never a question if this was Japanese or Korean, I'm just saying I don't understand either languages but their music slaps.

Please allow me to paraphrase; "As a Korean, I can verify this is a serious music genre and we would never speak of music this fine in the same breath as that cooperate trash K-pop" or perhaps "Hell yeah this slaps! It's Korean FTW!!! spit on k-pop!"

u/crypticfirecat Jan 26 '23
Do you happen to know the name of this ballad? I would very much like to look up the lyrics

I do not know this song sadly, but I can give you many artists who are popular for ballads and their skills in vocals,
Kim Bum Soo

not korean but i think you need to go a bit further back for good korean ballads. probably 구창모, 장현 and 김광석 being my favourites. newer korean ballads(that i have heard) just dont have the same soul as the older ones do.

Lol, u had to edit. Well no lol, i feel ur pain. People always miss the point , and are glad to reply to make u feel bad. And yes, j pop k pop are amazing. But i think k pop slams harder than j pop.

u/Lyonore Jan 26 '23
To blatantly Americanize a differentiation for you, that I’ve noted; if you can see writing, Korean characters tend to have round aspects, whereas Japanese tend to be more angular.
5
u/MadReasonable Jan 26 '23
I tell my friends that Korean has circles and straight vertical lines. Japanese and Chinese have multiple alphabets and share one of them. Good luck with those.

its crazy how many random people are great singers, especially in asia. might be the same everywhere but more people do karaoke in asia so you just know how well everyone around you can sing
105
u/illegitimate_Raccoon Jan 26 '23
In Japan and Korea, some folks take karaoke very seriously and practice at home. It's crazy.
42
u/HatsNDiceRolls Jan 26 '23
The Philippines is crazy. Karaoke Room? No need for one.
23
u/timber_cove Jan 26 '23
Yes! I was talking to a Filipino friend and he said that his family brings their karaoke setup camping. Thought that was wild.
12
u/jonahsocal Jan 26 '23
I have a VA who is Filipina and she tells me that there is no celebration in her entire apartment complex that is not attended by a karaoke machine, and that, in cases of common celebrations like Christmas, literally each and every apartment has its own karaoke machine, all operating at a fever pitch.
6
u/Holoholokid Jan 26 '23
My daughter's best friend is Filipino and I've been to their house for birthdays, etc a lot over the years. Full karaoke setup in their formal living room and a second in the family room in the basement. I get handed the microphone and told to pick something every time I'm over, yet I don't see anyone else (other than the kids) singing, so I'm a bit self-conscious to do it alone.
2
u/lastonedancing Jan 27 '23
This is the true Asian country for Karaoke- every Filipino seems to love singing.
3
u/itsdone20 Jan 26 '23
My singing is so bad I can make black out drunk people get up and tell me how bad my singing is haha
13
u/AJ3TurtleSquad Jan 26 '23
My brother lived in Metro Milan for a while. He said that any given time you could open your window and hear people singing karaoke. I love it
6
u/jotobean Jan 26 '23
So you're saying that all my Rockband game practice might not be for nothing if I ever go to Japan or Korea???? SCORE!!!

u/dashinny Jan 26 '23
In Asian countries you can find karaoke rooms everywhere.
3
u/No-Freedom-1995 Jan 26 '23
and people bring karaoke machines to parties and barbecues and weddings and stuff like that. When I lived in Asia I could tell you exactly how well every single one of my male and female friends could sing, it was just common to know that kind of info

Same…there has to be something evolutionary in the human body that reacts to such a voice
2
u/MercurialRL Jan 27 '23
The auditorial-created dopamine release is called frisson. Dopamine releases happen for different reasons based usually on the person themselves as to what makes it happen, but yeah definitely an evolutionary trait!

2
u/jrook777 Jan 27 '23
There's actually a korean Celine dion. Her name is Sohyang and she's better than Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston from a technical perspective. She's prob the current best female vocalist alive in the world right now.

Karaoke culture has created some serious talent in the east. Me and my boys get together and rap over Snoop Dogg and Dre songs from the 90’s at a karaoke spot. And this is just a Tuesday in some market in Seoul lol

Damn she can sing!
Reminds me of a night I went to a Korean barbecue restaurant that happened to have karaoke. After 4 or 5 very lack luster performers who couldn't carry a tune if you gave it to them in a bucket, a young Korean gentleman took the stage. In barely audible english he said he was going to sing Welcome to the Jungle by Guns & Roses.
The proceeded to absolutely kill it! Hitting the soaring high notes with amazing power and pitch. The whole audience was cheering before the song was even half over. Then he gave a subtle, quiet "Thank you" before rejoining his friends who were losing their minds over what they just saw. I think that man missed his calling.

Love all of the Korean street karaoke videos on YouTube. Most of the singers are either music students and/or professional karaoke singers. These are probably my favorites:

She’s an amazing singer but when every video of singing you see is “high notes” it becomes less impressive. Also as someone whose study music their whole life those don’t sound like crazy and impressive high notes, she’s just making an average note unnecessarily loud to make it appear higher and more impressive
