Dick Dale didn't need a drill

60

u/Hiram_Goldberg Jan 26 '23

Came here to say this! His right hand was as strong as anyone, he was doing this insane thing he learned playing the oud in northern Africa as a child. The scale is used widely in African music too, it's an amazing tune.

Left hand* ;]

Well played, I didn't remember that he's left handed!

Tell me you don't play the guitar without telling me that you don't play the guitar

12

u/Dude_Baby Jan 27 '23

No, they're saying Dale was left handed.

3

u/Hiram_Goldberg Jan 27 '23

My mistake, I'll make more I'm sure!

Well that's one way to tell people you've lived your life without realising that left handed people exist.

Tell me you don't know anything about Dick Dale without telling me that you don't know anything about Dick Dale

You no playa?

14

u/Wassasas Jan 26 '23

Also, common misperception. This isn’t just straight picked. There is a rhythm to the picking that cannot be picked up by a drill.

This. It takes concentration to even appreciate what he was doing with his picking.

Neither the song... (as a Greek!)

Legend and one of my favorite guitarists. Third Stone From The Sun gives me goosebumps.

1

u/foxleboi Jan 27 '23

Not even I (a novice guitarist) need a drill, most guitarists can play this by hand easily.

-1

u/nich3play3r Jan 26 '23

It appears he did.

41

u/Because_I_Cannot Jan 26 '23

This isn't next level, this is just some kid messing around

21

u/MagnanimousMook Jan 27 '23

The real next level is that Dick Dale can play this with his hands

30

u/gwardotnet Jan 26 '23

Been done over 50 years

33

u/Chocolate_Rage Jan 26 '23

Paul Gilbert wannabe

3

u/Bitter-Plenty-5303 Jan 26 '23

He knows what he is talking about

17

u/AverageDoonst Jan 26 '23

Watched without sound. I anyway know what he is playing.

2

u/gregusmeus Jan 26 '23

There aren't many songs based on a single string.

5

u/CamBoneXD Jan 27 '23

incorrect, there's a bunch

1

u/GoldenKickz Jan 26 '23

Sounds like black eyed peas - pump it

6

u/volleyballcrocodile Jan 26 '23

The song has a sample of Dick Dale: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4eEqN4HY7Q

0

u/Miguel-odon Jan 27 '23

Not just a sample.

4

u/volleyballcrocodile Jan 27 '23

What do you mean? That's what you call it when you take a song and use it in another song, regardless of how much of the song you're using.

13

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '23

Geez Louise Paul took a beating on that one!

5

u/Cr0key Jan 26 '23

Work smarter not harder lol

2

u/meromeromachine Jan 26 '23

There are also machines that play the songs all by themselves without any hand movement

"The Gizmo, also called the Gizmotron is an effects device for the electric guitar and bass guitar. It was invented in 1969 and patented by the English rock musicians Kevin Godley and Lol Creme in 1975, whilst they were members of the British rock group 10cc.

Taped or permanently attached to the body of an instrument, the Gizmotron uses small, motor driven plastic/rubber wheels to make the strings vibrate, yielding resonant, synthesizer-like sounds from each string.

The Gizmo's ability to create a wide range of sounds was central to the production of Godley and Creme's first post-10cc project, the 1977 triple concept album, Consequences. Godley and Creme left 10cc to create Consequences which was intended to be a promotional album to market the "Gizmo" "

5

u/AlexHimself Jan 26 '23

I don't think the Gizmotron was used to create either of these effects?

-2

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '23

Dunno mate, just clipped that off wiki. I have the Consequences album, it's quite good.

"Mechanism:
The device, a small enclosure attached to the guitar, consists of small motor-driven wheels with serrated edges to match the size of each string. The continuous bowing action is activated by pressing one or all of keys located on the top of the unit. Pressing a key allows the wheel to descend against a motor-driven shaft and bow the corresponding string, while the other hand remains free to fret single notes or full chords."

3

u/volleyballcrocodile Jan 26 '23

Cool info, but the song in the clip was played by Dick Dale, not using a Gizmo.

1

u/earthmover535 Jan 27 '23

came here to comment about this. lots of cool gizmotron sounds on the godley/creme album “consequences”

4

u/geeked0ut Jan 26 '23

My favorite part is how poorly the audio and video line up.

3

u/louloc Jan 26 '23

That dude’s a tracer. 🤦🏻‍♂️

2

u/dominoclink35 Jan 26 '23

Gotta figure out how to do this with my drum sticks 🥁

2

u/VigilanteDetective64 Jan 27 '23

James Hetfield can do it 100 bpm faster…and all downstrokes. 😂

2

u/TheOminous1 Jan 27 '23

Work smart not harder

1

u/LaughingJAY Jan 27 '23

How is it next level when he's cheating

0

u/lost-zoop Jan 27 '23

This isn't next level. He has less skill than the original.

1

u/Low_Climate_2831 Jan 27 '23

So that’s how they did it

1

u/NiceCockBrotato Jan 27 '23

Your drill will play Miserlou if it hits a guitar?

-1

u/GhxstTurbo Jan 27 '23

Not sure if it's real or not he seems to be going on different strings perfectly which I feel like would be impossible

-2

u/Camcapballin Jan 26 '23

-2

u/NYCtotheBay Jan 27 '23

He’s not actually playing. Fingers don’t match the notes
