He gets so fucking into it his face just goes beet red

u/Neoniclide Jan 26 '23
That goes for anything he does, he’s very passionate about everything he does and really gets into character

u/kalitarios Jan 26 '23
I never had an issue with Jack Black. I know some people won’t watch anything with him in it
296
u/Andrays Jan 26 '23
I think that holds true for most comedic actors/comedians. Personally I can't take any level of Adam Sandler
233
u/Complex_Sherbet2 Jan 26 '23
Too bad. Hustle and Uncut Gems are awesome.
84
u/MonarchyMan Jan 26 '23
So is Reign Over Me.
48
u/AEnema18 Jan 26 '23
That movie is a gem. And it got me to play Shadow of the Colossus - double win!

Dude, when Sandler is having a panic attack and starts shouting the lyrics to the song as he’s having a PTSD episode during the courtroom scene is fucking heartbreaking. I completely forgot about that film. Now I need to go download it...

Yes! It’s just too stressful. Amazing movie, amazing performance from Sandler, never watching it again.

Sandler is an interesting one. He is actually a really good actor when he wants to be. Uncut Gems, Hustle and Reign Over Me are really good examples. But he likes to make a lot of quick and easy comedy movies with his matrs who he employs. That's why the same actors are in 90% of the comedies he makes. A lot of them are his mates who have been with him since the early days of Billy Maddison, Waterboy etc. He's brought them along for the ride which is actually really comendable imo.
16
u/lagvvagon Jan 26 '23
Sandler is a great actor when he wants to. He just chooses to make fun, goofy and lighthearted movies with his friends through his own production company and make millions. He has it figured out.

I 100% agree with the exception of Anchorman.
I don't mind him if he's in a supporting role, but I don't care much for him when he's in a lead role.

I have to admit I’m one of those people.
But I know he’s an awesome dude by seeing and watching stuff like this. The dude really is a good dude.
Side note: I see some posting about him portraying Garcia? Is this true? I might venture out of my zone to watch this as I’m a huge fan.
Side(r) note: what ever happened to Jerry Garcia from the Roseanne show? And Jackie’s kid Andy? I’ve watched the Conners a couple of times and the two are absent. Never mentioned.

u/ultrahateful Jan 26 '23
Next time you're in a public outing or around other people, you should try and act like you're performing. Like, push yourself to a nearly uncomfortable level of difference and contrast from how you normally act and speak. See what happens. Can't go to jail for acting eccentric. Can't get fined for it. And if it's fun or inspires you, do it again. Literally go out there and stop caring about how you'll be perceived for anything you do or say. Stay mindful and considerate but go fucking nuts. It's fun.

I was wondering if it’s because he’s nervous/embarrassed singing for the kid, as I would be. But I imagine Jack black wouldnt have that problem
81
u/kalitarios Jan 26 '23
He performs in a band, and does acting and movies. I think he’s over that, lol
97
u/Brymlo Jan 26 '23
Not the same thing. Also, lots of artists still get nervous after decades of being on stages.

A lot of singers say its harder to perform for a small room than for a huge stadium weirdly enough

Makes sense. I have no problem public speaking, but small groups or 1:1 conversations with people I'm not already close with are full of anxiety.

u/pwnagocha Jan 26 '23
Believe it or not it’s the most intimate performances that are the hardest. And I don’t think it gets more intimate than this. Making eye contact, it’s very personal. Playing to 20,000 people in an arena is easier because you’re so much more physically separated. It’s a mass of anonymous people, often you can’t see their faces at all due to lighting.
→ More replies39
u/From_l-leLL Jan 26 '23
im going to go with squatting for even longer than 10 seconds AND breaking into character and singing is what turned him red.
it gets way harder to squat for even a small amount of time the older you get unless youre in top shape
→ More replies166
u/creamboydreamboy Jan 26 '23
lol it’s because he’s crouching. His face is only kinda red before he crouches. He’s not a young man anymore so between that and the singing, he’s like almost straining. So nice of him to put forth the effort to touch a fan.

People are writing essays trying to explain it like they've never seen an old fat guy suddenly break into intense physical activity before.
14
u/--Mutus-Liber-- Jan 26 '23
Right? I'm almost 20 years younger than him and much less fat and if I were to squat down like that my face would also go red in a minute. It's literally just your circulation being constricted based on how you move your body lmao
→ More replies11
u/IDoNotAimWithMyHand Jan 26 '23
And squatting while also singing loudly, which will make you red by itself lmao

u/newuser201890 Jan 26 '23
because he's fat, old and crouching. (jack black is awesome and i love him, just stating the facts)
21
u/moslof_flosom Jan 26 '23
Probably the exact answer he would've given anyways. A big part of School of Rock was just telling kids to love themselves, I can't imagine he'd be too bothered by that information

Probably more an issue with weakening lungs. This happens a lot in vocalists (I see a ton in new fry vocalists) where you're losing far more air than you can handle.
Jack Black was probably extremely light headed after standing up from this, and you can tell by his hesitance that he realizes he's winded, but he has enough control & awareness not to let that ruin the performance and he tries harder at control making his face even more red.
It just enhances this experience that he'd put himself through that unprovoked to make someone happy.
Edit: For the record, I'm not implying that Jack Black is washed or anything. Quite the opposite if this is what's happening and he's controlling it so well. This happens to every vocalist at some point, even if temporary.

u/SatisfactionActive86 Jan 26 '23
i think he was just blushing over the interaction. it doesn’t matter how many fans you have, the “you’re one of the few things that brings my dying child comfort” is a lot of pressure and very emotional. i would feel a LOT of anxiety to not fuck up the conversation and make sure the experience was appropriately wholesome.

I want Jack Black and Keanu Reeves to team up with Dolly Parton for the ultimate justice league. The story is they come to help Ukraine and teach kids the moral of “don’t be an asshole”
They can battle Putin, Trump, and have an epic battle scene and give the world a sense of justice, and Jack Black can sing the theme song.

Crying inside from looking eye to eye with a terminally I’ll child, probably.
72
u/lunelily Jan 26 '23
I also have a condition where my skin goes bright red when I’m emotionally perturbed, despite how cool I’m trying to keep myself. It’s extremely frustrating, because it broadcasts my emotional distress even when I’m in situations where that’s not appropriate to show, like presentations.
It makes me really happy and feel less ashamed knowing that Jack Black has the same thing. (Notice many comments are trying to say it’s about him getting “passionate about singing/being in character”, but the redness actually starts long before he does either.)

I don’t know why but I used to get irritated by Jack Black but the more I see this guy the more I realize I’m kind of a superficial ass and he’s actually a super cool dude. And his mom helped bring back the Apollo 13 astronauts while she was in labor with him. What a story.

u/aka_jr91 Jan 26 '23
I can see not being a fan of some of his movies, different strokes as they say. But you can't not like the guy as a person, he's just so chill. The second part is a bit of a misconception though. She did develop the system that saved Apollo 13, but that wasn't the project she was working on during labor. Doesn't make her any less awesome though. I think pretty much everyone else in his family is a rocket scientist too.
