Why you have so many flies in your crib

u/Ffdmatt Jan 26 '23
Definitely the right question. The pet isn't a great solution if you don't take care of why flies are accumulating there in the first place...

Bro, where do you live? In the spring and summer flies are an annoying pest in every North American home. Just normal

u/AnimuleCracker Jan 27 '23
It is? Not here.

Very common. My mom and I put up a soft door length bug screen for the back door so that we can open the door for a breeze but not get bugs.

Definitely not. Every home gets one now and again just from the normal opening of doors when going in and out of the house, but more than just that one or two every now and again? That's an individual problem, not a seasonal one. Pardon the pun, but if you have flies any time of year, that's a bug, not a feature.

You're both wrong for assuming that your experience with flies applies to every location in the world... This very well could be a normal thing in some places of the world.

Yep, a few of us here live outside of America in places where having flies in the summer is a common thing…

He might get parasites that way. Our bearded dragon ate a housefly that got into his enclosure. Sure enough, it gave him worms.

u/DrPepperWillSeeUNow Jan 27 '23
Exactly, it's never a good idea to feed wild to pets they all have parasites.

How hard are these to take care of ? I have an office and I'd live to set up a spit for a terrarrium

Extremely difficult. I was thinking of getting one then I read up on what’s involved. I’m sure someone will correct me but I seem to recall you had to increase their enclosure size like every six months. You had to vary their diet almost as often. You had to provide heat and misting I think. And even under ideal conditions it would still only live like 3 years. You would most likely provide something less than ideal so it might live more like 1-2 years. Beautiful creatures but better to leave in the wild or with a sanctuary imho.

They are also super susceptible to parasites. We had our girl for 6 months, healthy as can be, and then within a matter of 4 hours we went from finding gher with a half thrown up worm, to her crossing the rainbow Bridge.

I have a 5yr old chameleon now. They can be a bit of work Mostly in setting up the cage right the first time, but also in keeping live food for them to eat, mostly crickets. The cage. Needs to be tall, have a good heat lamp, UVB source, misting or drip system, and a nice plant or climbing sticks setup as they are full-time tree dwellers.

I want one now. Where to buy and how much?

Most big pet stores have Chameleons in the reptile and exotic pets section. They’re cool little dudes.

Average cost of owning a chameleon: Expect to spend around $500 on initial equipment to include the cage, lighting, and enough food and supplements to last the first 10 days or so. From there, you should expect annual costs equivalent to about $100 a month or $1,200 a year.

Don't let your domestic chameleon eat wild bugs, they can carry bacteria or some pathogen that could harm them.

As a grown ass man, I did not expect to desire purchasing a lizard at 5am...well played
