Parkinsons

136

u/drksdr Jan 27 '23

Ah, the stuttering of morse code.

48

u/RunLoud6534 Jan 27 '23

I had a stutter as a kid and got over it by rapping (not that well), maybe if he tried turning it into a song in his head.

27

u/Jacob07-Soccer Jan 27 '23

“And and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and and - Gram Cracker”

9

u/Fun-Pen9430 Jan 27 '23

Beat me to it lol

7

u/krustyputt Jan 27 '23

Went up to 100 words per minute after getting it.

The wire isn't connected to anything iirc. Saw this video quite a while ago

Probably for the best, I'm still new at it, but I think I heard something about the fuhrer...🤷🏼‍♂️

Not necessarily!

I worked with a woman who's father was fluent in morse code, but also had dementia. The only way he could communicate was through morse code.

Seriously.

4

u/Exact_Manufacturer10 Jan 27 '23

I served with an old navy radioman would could send like this. He said that not only could they understand each other but they would recognize the sender.

u/Vivics36thsermon Jan 27 '23

A crummy commercial son of a bitch

5

u/BidetAllDay Jan 27 '23

I was scrolling for a “we’re trying to contact you about your car warranty” joke. Got blindsided by A Christmas Story.

3

u/LineChef Jan 28 '23

They should call it roundtine

10

u/thatdamnmurphylaw Jan 27 '23

Dammit I actually laughed out loud to that gif take my upvote

2

u/Nutmeg-Jones Jan 28 '23

I’m saying. That’s not a feat I’ll put stock in because no one’s gonna understand that at such a high pace

I wonder how many people in the world could be able to understand what he was sending at that speed… Less than 20?

339

u/cvbeiro Jan 27 '23

Never heard of amateur radio operators? Pretty sure there a more than 20…

Besides Morse code is still used for several things.

285

u/clamslammer707 Jan 27 '23

I believe OP was referring to the speed.

114

u/Able2c Jan 27 '23

Speed keys would give this guy a run for his money.
A weak signal in morse code is easier to discern than voice communication.
There's several navies that still use morse code.

22

u/Professional-Menu835 Jan 27 '23

Also suspicious this human is a HAM and not necessarily a veteran… “old guy who can do something young people can’t” often just gets turned into that word.

76

u/brkh47 Jan 27 '23 edited Jan 27 '23

That’s literally the first meaning of the word.

Cambridge Dictionary: Veteran -a person who has had a lot of experience of a particular activity

e.g a 20-year veteran of the New York Police Department

The second meaning is someone who’s been in the armed forces during the war.

11

u/Opposite_Rest_6807 Jan 27 '23

He's a vet. Was a conscript in the Greek special forces. He replied to another comment on here somewhere. He also said there's no way to understand what he said while using morse code at that speed.

3

u/Schroedinbug Jan 27 '23

no way to understand what he said

Give me an few months and my choice of microcontroller and I'd bet I could get an average of a million characters a second via morse code sent and received

3

u/Kreaturethenerfer Jan 28 '23

the guy in the video and the greek conscript guy are two different people.

2

u/Meggles_Doodles Jan 28 '23

I know SOS in morse code and that's about it

I hope i never actually feel the need to use it, and I hope if i do, someone else would know what it meant lol

the result is printed out on the other end, and then read in normal speed

22

u/anonbene2 Jan 27 '23

Thousands of us did when we were in the Army. That's exactly what our lessons looked like. Groups of 5 letters. I got up to 35 words per minute

3

u/Questioning-Zyxxel Jan 28 '23

That's damn quick.

7

u/anonbene2 Jan 28 '23

When you first hear it it sounds like one long beep and you think I could never do that but they start out slow and before you know it only 10 months later you're doing it no sweat.

My grandma went with her girlfriends to eat at a restaurant. Military men came in and sat near them and started communicating with each other via morse code about my grandma and her friends. My grandma knew what they were saying and replied back informing them she and her friends were not interested.

124

u/Glad-Pollution-3333 Jan 27 '23

I actually love this

41

28

9

Classic 'turd in the punch bowl' senerio right here.

3

u/manoteee Jan 27 '23

but they do! they can process this easily. they can also process a superposition of both 1 and 0, so even more so!

142

u/louloc Jan 27 '23

That’s a lost art form. That type of communication won wars and help tame the Wild West. Respect. 🫡

20

u/Loud_Charity Jan 27 '23

It will still win wars. Only a few months to go

9

u/bakekurkox Jan 27 '23

Help tame the wild west with masacres and mass killings okay lol

13

u/NRmusiccringe Jan 27 '23

Yeah “help tame the Wild West” is a big yikes from me as well lol

8

u/implodedrat Jan 27 '23

4

Were the Apache, Comanche, and Navajo to have free reign to raid as they please? Comanches along with the other listed groups raided northern Mexico to the point of depopulation. Part of the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo required that the United States contain these groups.

66

u/PakiFanatic Jan 27 '23

Impressive but why is the machine unplugged?

86

u/Milfoy Jan 27 '23

There's nobody left who could understand the message at that speed if it was sent.

8

u/MoinRot Jan 28 '23

"How is Morse code used today? Many ham radio operators around the world still use Morse code." - Google

I think there are lots of people who could understand him just fine. It's just a communication technique you don't get to see that often but it still has its advantages over stuff like radio

45

u/SteveX7 Jan 27 '23

just for comparison's sake: the wikipedia words-per-minute page states that

The upper limit for Morse operators attempting to write down Morse code received by ear using paper and pencil is roughly 20 wpm

whereas the operators receiving the input can decode at up to 70wpm

I still know Morse from my childhood Ham days but I never got past the 13 WPM threshold. It’s a hump that is really hard to get past. These guys are amazing. They can hold two completely separate conversations and not skip a beat. He may be chatting with you about the weather, and he will be giving signal reports via morse to the other guy.

I like how he's leaning on his left hand like that half of his body is bored while his right hand is busily tapping out dots and dashes faster than most people type. I wonder how long you have to develop a skill like that for it to stay with you like this.

2

u/Superb_Umpire7286 Jan 27 '23

Im always amazed by the proficiency a human can develop, only to become obsolete and often discredited and forgotten, as often as it happens.

This at one point was an essential rung on the ladder of technological development, along with many other technologies and tools now made ineffective in a modern context by our demand for faster and more convenient options.

I guess I wonder how long till I'm stuck in that same boat, given my position and utility in society. Only time can tell.

2

u/mickeyprime1 Jan 27 '23
