If you could fight the Kanto Gym Leaders in any order... Image

One of my favorite things from G/S was going back and fighting the Kanto leaders. I wish you could keep going back and fight gym leaders and they keep getting stronger. It’d be great for higher level grinding.

Seaking is also one of her lil bitch Pokémon

Nah it's actually Goldeen also that only in the Anime and to my knowledge no where else

349

Also Koga should get Venusaur for better coverage.

466

u/[deleted] 13d ago

Koga kinda got did dirty for this. I get that OP didn’t want to have multiple gyms with the same Pokémon, but there’s so many poison types in the game that Koga could’ve gotten to have an actually difficult team. Nidoking, venusair, gengar, and tentacruel could all be solid team members to give him some type variety in the late game

432

u/Calophon 13d ago edited 13d ago

Going into a poison gym leader fight and expecting your typical poison Pokémon and then getting hit with a Gengar is genuinely terrifying for some reason lol. But super fun!

201

u/Mechakoopa 13d ago

It would be incredibly on brand for Koga though.

111

u/AnonymousAccount1015 13d ago

For sure, not to mention that Gengar is also purple, so that would fit with his vibe and the Poison type (typically purple).

111

u/AtlasRoark 13d ago

Gengar is also a poison type, which fits the poison type.

u/Powatanner 13d ago

Man I just have to disagree. Each of those Pokémon (except for Nidoking) are way more associated with their other type than they are with poison type, in my opinion. Giving them to Koga just seems so odd. Besides, Gengar is already claimed by Agatha of the elite four and nidoking by Giovanni. OP made a point not to let any of the Pokémon mix among gym leaders.

61

u/Zanzaben 13d ago

Except for exeggutor between Erika and Sabrina, as well as Rhydon between Brock and Giovanni.

47

u/[deleted] 13d ago

Like I said, I understood they didn’t want to repeat Pokémon. I also forgot about Agatha, but also I’m assuming since these gym leaders could be elite four members, they’d replace the current ones.

I also get what you’re saying about these mons being associated with their primary types so I can’t really argue that. I just don’t think that’s necessarily a requirement

→ More replies

6

u/GodHimselfNoCap 13d ago

Except koga is a ninja his whole gym puzzle is based around deception. Using pokemon that are technically poison is exactly the kind of thing that makes sense and op already reused a couple other pokemon in this setup Edit: Brock uses Giovanni signature pokemon that's the most disrespectful thing possible

3

u/1OOKtron 13d ago

Koga should get a Gengar though. In the comic books he had a badass Gastly that could raise the dead, and it was one of the only two or 3 Pokemon you actually see from him iirc.

She actually had a Lapras in the manga, plus gives her some better ice coverage to hit flying and grass.

48

u/richasianman 13d ago

There should also be room for Gyarados in her later teams. She uses Mega Gyarados in the anime.

20

u/Griff_Suriaj 13d ago

Also has a gyarados in the manga.

6

u/vladislavopp 12d ago

Gyarados is there

34

u/pageofcups221 13d ago

Yeah, Misty should have Blastoise instead of Vaporeon, IMO

61

u/Bulbaa77 13d ago

If you look at misty as a character it would make no sense if she her team for a late game doesn't have Vaporeon and Lapras obviously starmie speaking and I guess Golduck for the anime reference

33

u/pageofcups221 13d ago

I feel ya. Vaporeon is one of the highest Special Attackers of the Water type in the first Gen but I feel like them and Blastoise are nearly interchangeable. There is no reason she should have either a Blastoise or a Vaperoen when we look at the Anime and Manga but they are both stereotypically strong water types, for different reasons. I just feel that she would pick a squirtle over an eevee.

44

u/Bulbaa77 13d ago

Vaporeon is a more elegant water type compared to Blastoise personally I think Blastoise over Slowbro for her since Slowbro doesn't even fit her somewhat elegant theme and she does later get associated with Blastoise

Obligatory "check out the rom hack Crystal Clear".

Collect 16 gym badges, in any order, with scaling levels/teams for gym leaders based on how many badges you currently have.

523

u/shadowman2099 13d ago

The glaring flaw with this game is that wild encounters don't scale, so if you start in Kanto you could cheese your way with a massively over leveled Golbat and such.

345

u/DeanOnFire 13d ago

That's true, it's something that's woefully apparent if you start in Kanto and hop over to Johto, especially if you start in the early routes. Crystal Clear isn't perfect by any means, but what really bored me was the lack of story. Which is somewhat ironic given that the story of the mainline Pokemon games is never the highlight, but to have it completely removed makes the experience a bit hollow.

137

u/Skater_x7 13d ago

This is why I like the Pokemon Colosseum, Gale of Darkness games -- new twist on gameplay while also adding nice story element.

Also, there's the fanmade game Pokemon Uranium I highly recommend since that game has a really nice story compared to any of the mainline Nintendo games (actually puts the Nintendo games to shame tbh).

32

u/cannibalisticapple 13d ago

Collosseum and XD are probably my favorites for this reason. Has the core gameplay of the main games (battling), but takes a different approach than gyms. And also has some serious dark themes which are awesome :D

9

u/BabyYodasDirtyDiaper 12d ago

And I also enjoyed XD's heavy emphasis on double battles. Almost all battles in the game are doubles. It really adds more depth to the strategy, and it encourages raising pokemon in a slightly different way, with a greater emphasis on moves that strike multiple opponents and such.

Can someone explain this to me, is Crystal Clear a game?

359

u/smish108 13d ago

It’s a ROM hack. You need the original crystal ROM and the IPS patching file, combining the two will get you a ROM for Crystal Clear

84

u/Arcanine26 13d ago

You got a link to a step by step guide for this by any chance?

It's a homemade pokemon game based in Pokemon crystal. Or "hacked Pokemon Crystal's ROM" aka Romhack. Someone went through the Pokemon crystal files and changed a bunch of things to make their own game.

You can download this game and put it onto a cartridge for a Gameboy Color. Or download a Gameboy color emulator and play the game through that.

Pokemon ROWE is the same idea but for Pokemon Emerald with Pokemon up to Gen 8! Would strongly recommend that as well

9

u/SkywayDisconnect 12d ago

ROWE was great but still needs a bit of the polish Crystal Clear had imo. A lot of the dialogue was left untouched so it will awkwardly reference events from vanilla emerald even though they never occurred. Nothing game breaking from what I could tell though and I definitely appreciated the wild Pokemon scaling in levels as well (Something Crystal Clear lacked)

Also not really a polish problem. More a personal thing. But I wasn't a fan of all the final battles being doubles for seemingly no reason. Would have preferred this be optional.

For people that simply want to build their ideal perfect team though, ROWE might be the best ROM hacks have to offer. You really can't beat all Pokemon being available immediately as soon as you start the game, as long as you know where to find them.

256

u/SilaSitesi 13d ago edited 13d ago

Crystal Clear is really great as an idea, but the obnoxious developer self-inserts and forced memes really throw me off. I know asking for "immersion" in a GBC game is a bit dumb, but when the Elite Four roster is literally the dev's Discord friends (and the leader being the dev himself, of course), I can say they went a bit too far with it.

At least there's the option to fight the actual E4 once you beat the game.

15

u/Deluxe_Flame 13d ago

Aw damn, you’d think it would be the other way around. Challenge the devs for beating the game.

180

u/246011111 13d ago

I remember the title screen being like

DEV'S NAME

presents

Crystal Clear

You can tell what their priorities were.

219

u/ThisHatRightHere 13d ago

I mean they made an entire unique take on Crystal with a lot of work behind it. With rom hacks always being free I can’t blame them for at least wanting some publicity from it.

101

u/MagmarBoi 13d ago edited 13d ago

Yeah this, yeah I get how it comes across but honestly these guys are doing free work in a field where proof of work and having your name known is key for getting game developer jobs.

19

u/ThisHatRightHere 13d ago

Exactly. I get people want to have a complete Pokémon experience, but chances are you’d have no idea who made these things if they didn’t get their name out there. Drayano is probably the most known rom hacker, and that’s only because he’s been doing it for over a decade and has like 7 or 8 different well made hacks out there. And that’s typically without alternating core elements like in Crystal Clear.

27

u/CrazyCalYa 13d ago

On the one hand if you're making a ROM hack it's inherently sort of campy. You can't go for a true-to-form remake because the hack is a hack. You're also putting a lot of your time and effort to make, for free, something that people will enjoy.

But on the other hand if you then want broader appeal for your hack you have to accept criticisms like this. I'd never release a work with blatant memery and self-inserts without setting that expectation early on. Putting in a hidden dev-team fight or legendary would be very different (I'd argue even cooler) than having it be a focal point.

8

u/FreezeDriedMangos 13d ago

I agree. At the end of the day it’s a free thing made in someone’s spare time, but a good hack (or mod of any game) is really upfront about what it is. If it’s a meme, it tells you and that’s fun. If it’s not, it can do its best to be an authentic extension of the game, and that’s fun too. Suddenly switching between the two with no warning is jarring

8

u/CrazyCalYa 13d ago

ROM hacks demonstrate the difficulty of subtlety in game design. It can be a lot harder as well when you have a small team (sometimes just an individual) wrestling between implementing their artistic vision and giving something wide appeal.

But in theory, arent many gym's locked behind various HMs required to get to them? Does the hack somehow remove those barriers?

425

u/MonsieurMidnight 13d ago edited 13d ago

I think they remove it, you can totally start your Gym Challenges with Blue and end it with Falkner if you want. This is a free roaming game, everything scale up to your level depending on how many badges you own.

You choose your own starter from a list, all classed depending on their "difficulty" to use and you choose your starting town from both region.

107

u/Karma_Doesnt_Matter 13d ago

This sounds awesome.

22

u/PrincePenguino69 13d ago

Emphasis on sounds. In practice, I think the idea needs many different mechanics to actually be fun beyond the novelty.

6

u/OrganizerMowgli 13d ago

It's my second favorite after Radical Red - which just came out with a new version that includes having your Pokemon follow you, and choosing ANY starter up thru Gen 8.

It's a difficulty hack of fire red that ramps up the challenge, but very fair. Like no items in battle, set mode (no free switch in), and you're capped to the level of the highest mon for the next gym.

It was the first time I've been forced to use non-damaging moves. They also have all Pokemon up through gen 8, and I've never played past 5 so it's really cool way to get to know them all. One of the most important things is having the type shown in each battle because of the amount of Mon. There's a hundred little quality of life improvements just like that. The moves look so amazing, like improved animations/ design with same #of pixels.

I actually haven't beaten it fairly.. As in I've had to get help online and watch 'how to sweep' videos on YouTube. The new mode also has infinite rare candies if you choose - which gets rid of grinding (minimal grinding mode also removes IV differences).

Also instead of game corner you just buy pseudo legendaries and all dragons, $100k ea, 200 for the shiny and/or hidden ability.

No new moves, no updated move pools, no encounter location changes (sorta), and other QoL stuff that for me are bare essentials in a rom hack.

Obviously subjective. But for me it's so close to what I'd like yet so far that's annoying for me.

Gen 1 Thunderpunch going off that Special Stat is gonna be pretty mediocre.

Of course, it doesn't help that Gen 1 Fighting types have no good options because Hitmonlee got greedy and took 3 of the 6 damage dealing Fighting moves for himself as signature moves.

Yellow was released in Japan on Sept. 12, 1998, and Blaine's anime appearance was Aug. 13-20 of the same year. The game was probably too far into post-production to incorporate the anime's version of Blaine, I imagine.

Nope, meant Psywave because thats the Gym TM that all the leaders 'mons have, unless it cant learn it for some reason.

27

u/TheArtistFKAMinty 13d ago

Oh, fair, but Psywave is a terrible move. It does a random amount between 0.5 and 1.5x the user's level. Abra's special attack is totally ignored, which is like its only good stat other than speed. It's like RNG Seismic Toss.

Others I've made? This is the first time I've done this.

And as I said in the notes for Giovanni, I considered Mewtwo, but he'd pretty much be unbeatable with it, so I decided not to.

I was going to ask the same thing as the other user, I could swear I've seen a post just like that in the past, with the same layout and stuff.

Edit: I guess it's just the same tool, VP Pro Trainer Card. Still...

Mewtwo isn’t that hard to beat mainly because of gen 1 ai lmao.

For the sake of flavor I’d prefer gio to have mewtwo at the end, but I totally understand your justification.

17

u/Maxorus73 13d ago

I think Mewtwo would be all right for Giovanni, since all his teams can be swept with earthquake or psychic, and Mewtwo isn't weak to one of those and resists the other

I must be out of the loop here it why would Giovanni get mewtwo? His theme is ground type, mewtwo is psychic.

Anime

18

u/Ghengiroo 13d ago

Mewtwo is associated with Team Rocket in all forms of media.

7

u/The_Biggest_Wheel 13d ago

Mewtwo is associated with Blaine since he was the one who created it in the Pokemon Adventures Manga.

17

u/[deleted] 13d ago

I believe Blaine is a former Team Rocket scientist

Personally instead of a marowak I would have given giovanni a persian because of the anime

20

u/Cambro88 13d ago

Persian with slash and thunderbolt would be formidable too.

49

u/Ongr 13d ago

And Mewtwo in his final team

59

u/Deathly_God01 13d ago

He literally has in his comment that Mewtwo would make the team neigh unbeatable. Which I'd agree with. You'd need some mega-stacked Tauros team just to take it on with Gen1 mechanics making Mewtwo both a sweeper and tanky as hell.

I love this so much. It’s nonsense why this isn’t the standard.

Freedom to explore in Pokémon. One of my first games was FRLG and RSE. I truly appreciated how I felt like I could explore. I felt like each zone has a new area to unlock and treasure to discover.

BW was great, it had a tight scripts, the most compelling characters, and great region design… except for the plot-locking (remember that one NPC, “we’re just standing around for no reason!”), cause at least in FRLG, there was a “reason” you couldn’t move (Snorlax, a bike, a badge, some key item you had to go looking for based on your other interactions).

XY and SMUSUM just kinda ruined it for me. They hold my hand, literally forcing me to follow the yellow brick road, as if the adventure couldn’t be more interesting off road. Bring back the RPG in Pokémon… cause modern Pokémon isn’t exploration anymore, it’s A smashing.

7

u/Aveleene 12d ago

See you say this, and this is what we thought Scarlet/Violet was gonna be. Until they revealed it’s “pseudo” open world because even though you can go anywhere, the gyms don’t scale.

And Pokemon fans DEFENDED that decision, like they always do every single time GameFreak does something awful. “Gym badge scaling would be a TERRIBLE idea.”

(See dexit and then re-selling us the dex as paid DLC)

Nobody hates pokemon fans more than pokemon fans. And nobody hates progress more than Pokemon fans. Heaven forbid we ask for better standards on this children’s game.

I think the only thing I would change is Giovanni’s 3 badge team since Nidorino and Nidorina don’t become ground types until they evolve.

58

u/ReisenBnuuy 13d ago

Why not Moltres in Blaine's lineup anywhere? It's literally canon that Moltres was the reason for him to become a Fire Type specialist.

There’s only one legendary in this list and OP only chose it because there were a limited number of electric Pokémon

This is great. Would love a remastered Gen I with adjustable difficulty and revamped "open-worldness" allowing the player to beat the trainers and gym leaders in any order and rematch gym leaders against progressively more difficult teams. Nice work!

21

u/10wuebc 13d ago

There is a modded rom Shin Pokemon Red, it has a difficulty scale option and allows you to rematch trainers even gym leaders (with scaled up pokemon of course.)

I really like this concept! Though I think you were too cautious with some of the early teams. Misty gets her Starmie after 1 badge and Erika gets her Vileplume after 3. Movesets can always be nerfed as well. Facing fully evolved aces early on tends to be more memorable for the player.

some thoughts:

1 - I think Giovanni being saved as the final gym leader makes good thematic sense, also not sure why the gym leader count only goes up to 7

edit: didn't think it through and the number system is based on the # of existing badges you have, not that each team is a 1st badge, 2nd badge...8th badge team. Thank you to those to filled me in, kinda obvious in hindsight

2 - Not sure why Surge would have Zapdos? You could just include a Pikachu or a 2nd pokemon. Ofc there's not a lot of electric types but it should be fine

12

u/TheFutsalKid 13d ago

I thought that at first as well (regarding your first point) but realised that it goes up to 7 to imply you have 7 badges by the time you vs a gym leader as they would be the 8th & final one. It is also why they each have a ‘no badge team’, as that would be their party for if you were to challenge them as the first gym leader

5

u/VGVideo 13d ago

The teams shown are for how many badges the challenger already has, so the 7-badge team is if you are challenging them for the 8th badge

Super cool man! Awesome work! I’ve always wondered what full teams on gym leaders would look like and hope they incorporate them in future games.

6

u/metalflygon08 What's Up Doc? 13d ago

Why does Surge as the 8th Leader still have a Voltorb? As Gym Leader 8Electrode's not that broken at all.

9

u/meyer_33_09 13d ago

Based on OP’s description, they did that strictly to ensure that the 8th Gym and E4 teams weren’t identical, which I think is pretty silly. Nothing wrong with teams being the same if the levels and move sets improved imo.

5

u/Lopsided_Platypus_51 13d ago

All of these old time sprites has me wishing I was 8 years old again, watching the Indigo League anime and playing the TCG and Pokemon Blue for hours on end

u/MissingnoMiner 12d ago

My thoughts on each team:

-Brock makes perfect sense. Golem becoming his ace(not the same thing as signature pokemon)was even how Let's go handled his rematch team.

-Honestly, don't see why Misty would use Seaking over Blastoise with the other starters already represented.

-Using duplicate mons like how the e4 did honestly makes more sense than throwing a legendary like Zapdos on there. Lt. Surge can kinda get a pass since he at least briefly used Zapdos in the manga, but it's a stretch.

-Erika's team makes perfect sense.

-You did Koga real dirty... Beedrill seems perfect for an early team, and while keeping Venomoth makes sense for how much he uses it, Gengar, Venusaur or one of the Nidos are all better options than Golbat for later teams.

-Sabrina's team makes sense, although I'd argue that Abra, between a decent TM moveset and the inherently broken nature of gen 1 psychic types, would still be a perfectly valid ace. At the very least, it's odd to exclude it entirely from that team.

-Blaine, again, makes perfect sense.

-Giovanni, as inherently illogical as fighting him early would be, makes as much sense as possible given how he'd never realistically follow the league rules to limit his team. If he would for some reason do it, that's probably what he would use.

Overall, these are pretty solid beyond a few questionable choices! Would love to see versions for the E4 as gym leaders or for other regions.

5

u/pkmntrnrcasey 12d ago

Being able to battle Giovanni that early on wouldn’t make much sense plot wise.

22

u/MagorTuga 13d ago

Swap out Nidoqueen/Sandlash for Persian on Giovanni and we good.

10

u/madonna-boy 13d ago

why do they drop/rotate pokemon as they progress? shouldn't they just be adding?

20

u/Colanasou 13d ago

Team would get stagnant quickly if they kept the same team regardless of it being the 4th or 6th badge
