Oaths mean nothing to a scoundrel.

1k

u/IamUltimate 6d ago

Yeah I’m surprised I had to go down so far to see this. Him being under oath doesn’t change his responses at all. He’s a garbage person who will give garbage answers because he can and he won’t be held accountable.

1k

u/chanandlerbong420 6d ago

That's not the point. The point is that he would open himself up to a perjury charge if he lies and it can proven.

1k

u/IamUltimate 6d ago
  1. Just like he opened himself up to impeachment charges with quid pro quo actions with Ukraine and incitement of insurrection?
  2. Pretty sure he has lied under oath before, nothing has happened.
  3. As long as people don’t hold him accountable, it doesn’t matter what he opens himself up to. Everyone thought he was joking when he said he could shoot someone on 5th ave and get away with it. After four long years, I don’t think it was a joke.

I’d like to think a real trial would be different to a senate trial but you’re probably right.

235

u/-strangeluv- Colorado 6d ago edited 6d ago

Agreed. He knows he wouldn't be answering questions under oath that the DA doesn't already have the answers to along with evidence to prove it. He's a criminal, but he's not stupid. All the shit this guy has done, he's a survivor. If nuclear Holocaust happened tomorrow 2 things would be left. Cockroaches and Donald J Trump.

Well I guess that's just 1 thing.

100

u/MickWounds Australia 6d ago

He’s been lying and swindling his way through the world his whole life. Can’t see it stopping now. I’d love to see some justice brought for his crimes and corruption but I won’t hold my breath

40

u/moorej66 6d ago

I see him going to jail at some point. I've been saying this for a couple years. Understand completely why people don't think anything will ever happen to him. I think he has burned so many bridges and he no longer has the power of the presidency to hide behind. My biggest concern is the Trump supporters getting violent. He really should have tried to pardon himself.

21

u/UnlikelyKaiju 6d ago

Trump pardoning himself would have literally been an admission of guilt, which means that anything he pardoned himself for would have been grounds to impeach him and bar him from holding a public office ever again.

Also, I think I heard a while ago that people who accept pardons are no longer protected by the Fifth Amendment regarding those specific crimes and would be forced to testify when called upon to answer questions.

100% with you. I'm sick of people thinking that the guy was smart enough to make it to presidency. To me, the guy was the ultimate Manchurian candidate, with a cruise-size amount of powerful enablers and parasites, exactly because he is dumb as a brick.

I’d like to think a real trial would be different to a senate trial but you’re probably right.

I have been thinking lately that it might be hard to get a jury of 12 people and none of them are in the MAGA cult.

80

u/DoingJustEnough 6d ago edited 6d ago

Jurors are supposed to go into a trial with no preconceived notions about the defendant. HOW is THAT gonna happen on planet Earth with anyone who hasn't spent the last five years in a coma??

84

u/beaushaw 6d ago

Back in the mid '90s my brother in law went waaaay up into Canada to help a guy build a cabin on an island.

A day or so after getting back he picked up the newspaper and there was a story of OJ's trial on it. He said "what did OJ do?" I was like holy shit, you might be the only person in the country who could serve on the jury who actually knows nothing about this case.

29

u/thaaag 6d ago

Hmm... I guess that's what we need to do from now on. 12 people each week will be sent off to the back of beyond for a year on the off chance something high profile happens during their time away. We'll need to set up a rotating schedule - a new 12 sent off each week. It will need 52 separated groups so there's no new info/gossip shared around.

Some people might even like that.

While I believe “kung flu” is racist and completely inappropriate for a world leader to say, I have to admit it did make me chuckle the first time I heard it. Mostly because it caught me off guard in an “I can’t believe our president just said that” kind of way.

27

u/MadDogTannen California 6d ago

From a purely joke mechanics perspective, it's a good pun. I don't think Trump came up with it, but he clearly thought it was funny and worth repeating.

18

u/OfCourseIKnowHim 6d ago

The difference now is that the impeachment process was decided by a biased "jury" with political motivations to not hold him accountable. An impartial jury or judge in a real court won't be so apathetic.

u/Owyn_Merrilin 6d ago

Not at all like that. In an impeachment the jury is the senate. He literally could have shot someone in broad daylight on Fifth Avenue and gotten away with it with that crowd.

In a real trial you get a real jury, not your hand picked cronies.

US system is a joke, just a bunch of fancy words and heavy rhetoric about ‘oaths and constitution’ that actually means fuck all.

39

u/PopovChinchowski 6d ago

You're missing the actual importance of it then, based on your response.

It's not that testifying under oath means he'll suddenly tell the truth, he has no compunctions there.

It's that any statements that are provably false that are made under oath can result in perjury charges. And the likelihood is he'll make some, because he can't seem ro help himself from lying.

This is one of the major reasons his lawyers were so wary of him ever speaking to Mueller under oath in the inital impeachment trial.

Prosecutors already know this. That's why they ask him questions they already know the answer for to see if he will lie under oath. The best-case scenario is he gets arrogant and lies, but it's far more likely we get a Jeff Sessions, "I do not recall" parade.

1k

u/irresponsible_owl 6d ago

He really fucked up when responding to the allegations from Carroll. He could have completely gotten away with it if he said "Yeah, we banged. It was consensual. I'm sorry that she no longer feels that way."

That way even a DNA test couldn't prove him guilty - it's basically his word against hers for something that happened 25 years ago. And she even said that she didn't believe it was rape until she told the story to her friend a while later and her friend convinced her she was raped.

669

u/Carbonatite Colorado 6d ago edited 6d ago

Didn't he once say he didn't assault a woman because she was too ugly?

"I'd totally rape someone, but only if she's hot" is a pretty fucked up defense.

Exactly. I saw a right wing meme that was basically a pic of his ex-wife Marla Maples to whom he was married at the time the alleged rape occurred, with text asking why would he rape the unattractive accuser when he had his hot wife at home. Never-mind that rape is about control, but the accuser was arguably more attractive than Marla Maples was at the time.

10

u/Utterlybored North Carolina 6d ago

Yes. It doesn't matter one way or the other, but it does help point out the absurdity of Trump's statement, which does nothing to suggest he was not actively raping women

It's basic misogyny from a serial abuser.

It's communicating to other men that she has no value (i.e., he doesn't find her sexually attractive) so she shouldn't be taken seriously, regardless of whether or not she's telling the truth.

58

u/ronin1066 6d ago

Yes, because he's looking at 70 yr old her, not 35 yr old her when he allegedly raped her. It's scoring a rhetorical point for his asshole qult.

Too many fucking people think that rape is about sex or even the level of attractiveness. It's about POWER and this man has done nothing but claw his way to being powerful since he was born. I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that Mr GrabEmNThePussy is guilty as hell. Hearing his voice makes me want to scrub my soul with bleach and Ajax.

179

u/Carbonatite Colorado 6d ago

As I like to tell people...

Women in Burqas get raped. It's not about how you dress.

Fat women get raped. It's not about how you look.

Shy women get raped. It's not about how you act.

Sexual assault is about power and entitlement. I'm a survivor of it. It's not about how I went to a party and talked to boys and wore a short skirt. It's about the fact that they felt so entitled to use my body that they drugged me. Entitlement and power and seeing women as subhuman. That's what it is.

89

u/bennzedd 6d ago

To add on to these points...

Donald Trump was accused by over twenty women of sexual assault. I think it was Stephen Colbert who put it like this:

If one person says "hey this guy pissed in my sink," that's just one guy, he's probably crazy.

If over twenty people say "hey this guy came to my house and pissed in my sink," then... you might be a sink-pisser.

56

u/Carbonatite Colorado 6d ago

Including women as young as 13 years old. He's a serial predator who would be locked up as a sex offender if our justice system was actually just.

This is why I am in favor of getting rid of the filibuster. Old school Democrats are saying "no, no. it will look like we're trying to ram legislation down people's throats. Things should be to be bipartisan to get passed."

Wake up. That world is gone. No matter how good the legislation is, Republicans will automatically oppose it if any Democrats seem to support it. Literally even if it is legislation that they wrote themselves or someone that they suggested be nominated. They are no longer arguing in good faith as adults. these are just children playing games and if we want anything to get done this is how we have to do it. And people elected Democrats so they do want to see these policies passed and this is the only way it will ever happen.

People will be mad if nothing gets done.

27

u/hwaite New York 6d ago

Trump will threaten to run for office but I doubt he'll follow through.

  • He'll be 78 by then and even less mentally fit than he is now.
  • He'll be tied up with lawsuits for years and will be lucky to avoid jail.
  • His viability as a candidate is inextricably bound to his image as an infallible alpha male. Between now and 2024, all kinds of dirty laundry will be exposed. There will be even more indisputable evidence that he's racist, corrupt, incompetent, lazy, bankrupt, senile and/or a sex offender.
  • He hates losing and will come up with an excuse to drop out if the general election polls are unfavorable (which they will be).

At this point, it's so much better for Trump to act as a kingmaker. He can just play golf and bask in adulation at rallies where he insults those who dare to criticize him. Aspiring Republican politicians will line up to kiss the ring. It'll be embarrassing to watch.

7

u/sowhat4 6d ago

Do you think that he has the self control to be able to let someone else take center stage and be the candidate? He has a pretty significant mental disorder that interferes with self preservation. I'm thinking of him not allowing Dr. Fauci screen time because Fauci was developing a 'following'.

Exactly. The Republicans think everything short of letting the Republicans do whatever they want is politically divisive. There's no good reason not to do it.

25

u/techleopard Louisiana 6d ago

Remember, this is the party that incited its voters to protest and chant "LOCK HER UP" because of an accusation for which there wasn't a single shred of evidence.

They don't get to squeal 'vindictive' and 'politically divisive' when they themselves run those plays every single day.

16

u/tofuhater 6d ago

I used to look at things like this, not anymore. Now I see the Republicans accusing the Democrats of something, it just means they're already well on their way to doing it themselves. They are just giving themselves political cover in advance.

Honestly, who gives a fucking shit what they see? They see Trump the way Garisson sees him. They think Biden made it snow in Texas. They thought there was a Democrat Child Sex Colony™ on Mars. They thought Biden was Trump wearing a Biden suit when he was inaugurated.

What they see doesn't matter. What they "think" doesn't matter. They don't matter. Fuck um. They had their chance to jump off the crazy train and they chose to stay on board. Let it cart them if into the midden of history with their counterparts from every other time and place when fat idiots with god complexes brainwashed people like them.

Edit: just so the mods won't seize on the slightest turn of phrase to hand out the good old ten-a-penny perma-ban.

Biden has made several statements indicating that he doesn't intend to sic the DOJ on anyone. But of course that won't matter when dealing with a political party that has persecutory delusions as one of their defining traits.

political party that has persecutory delusions as one of their defining traits

Precisely. The party of "law and order" has nothing but experts at portraying themselves as persecuted victims in any kind of circumstance. Dems need to learn to never kowtow around this complex of theirs and just do what's right. They'll complain no matter what.

It’s not just friends in high places. If you had enough money to have lawyers on staff, there is almost no court proceeding (esp. civil) that can’t be drug out for the duration of your natural life.

Exxon Valdez sunk in 1989. In 2008, in a 5-3 decision John Roberts’ court found that Exxon didn’t have to pay $2.5B but instead had to pay $500M.

It took 19 years to get them to pay anything at all, and when it was finally finished, they got the fee reduced 80%. Wealth has advantages. The biggest is the ability to hire lawyers who can file motions forever.

19

u/richard-564 6d ago

Not to mention how inflation changed over the years and the fact they were earning money off that money via investments the whole time. 500m was probably less than zero for them at that point. So they were essentially fined nothing.

Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit:

There must be in-groups whom the law protectes but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.

There is nothing more or else to it, and there never has been, in any place or time.

18

u/com2420 Tennessee 6d ago

It's also what happens when a significant amount of your voting base can be usurped by a man who ran on a platform of, "All of these politicians are corrupt incompetents. I am the only one who can fix it. Vote for me."

And it works! Because your party's platform is to make government so ineffective that those people are absolutely justified in believing that is true!

There really are 2 justice systems.

Basically, rich people get to hide behind intent. Poor people are locked up pending trial, or summarily executed - it really depends on how whimsical that officer is feeling, you know?

60

u/WORSE_THAN_HORSES 6d ago

This is interesting. Let’s say I planned, hosted, and spoke during a rally for BLM and ended up with an outcome similar to January 6 I would be in jail right now. Even if I didn’t participate in the march and insurrection I would be in jail. Even if my intent was to get people worked up so they’d be angry enough to vote in 2022, if those people marched from my keynote to the capitol and 5 people died, I would be in jail.

Why would anyone be a democrat at this point? You can literally get away with murder as a Republican. There are zero consequences to any actions as a politician on the right. Why would anyone want to be held to the higher standard when you can just lie, cheat, murder, and line your pockets with zero downside?

18

I hope to see, in my lifetime, some kind of criminal reform where they move to take white collar crimes more seriously than drug crimes. These are the most egregious crimes to me, as they've stolen and displaced more money than any other crime - they're the most grand-scale, cause unmeasurable economic harm, and they get slaps on the wrist for it when they get caught because no one was physically harmed, which most often isn't even true since, indirectly, it literally kills people and can destroy people and entire trust institutions.

Our criminal justice system is very heavily focused around punishing people punching up. Anyone punching down has the resources to battle back against the people below them.

If Bernie Madoff didn't con billionaires, he probably would be out of prison by now. Poor drug addicts get punished constantly, but rich drug addicts can go national television while high.

57

u/Kraelman 6d ago

If an individual has the money, the amount of lawyers and paperwork you can burden people with is almost endless. You come at Trump and he's going to sue you. And then he's going to fight every shred of evidence against him and then he's going to appeal every fucking ruling, and then appeal again, and again, and again. It takes years to bring accountability to a Trump. And once you've shown that you're willing to go through all this, it's an incredibly hard sell to go after them. Because this country is full of assholes and criminals that aren't mega-rich and you barely have time to deal with all of them.

But... then he ran for President, which makes him the most scrutinized man on the planet. And now they can't just sweep his shit under the rug because you don't want to deal with it.

14

u/paul-arized 6d ago

The only way he could've avoided this after he won was to be president forever, but that doesn't help Don Jr. nor Eric.

24

u/thinkingdoing 6d ago

If he had succeeded at cheating the election, or succeeded with his MAGA coup on January 6, we would now be in the early stages of Trump's dictatorship, and his entire crime family would be immune from prosecution.

Just look at how sycophantic the Republican Party still is to Trump despite his failed coup to imagine the situation if the coup had succeeded.

It's very dangerous to celebrate victories that don't (yet) exist. It's the same line of thinking of upvoting an article that speculates that Trump "may soon" possibly ultimately face justice in some capacity. It's just wishful thinking.

I am sick of these wishful thinking type articles. I am done thinking that any republican will ever be held accountable. Donald Dump had committed numerous treasonous acts against our country and has brazenly done them out in the fucking open too. There are tapes, his tax records, his tweets, witnesses, etc and yet the dude can't even be subpoened. Do you know how devastating this is to the psyche of a hard working and law abiding citizen? Let alone what it does to the mind of the same citizen who has brown or black skin. This shit is so truly deflating and makes me wonder why I am even bothering following rules anymore. Why should I honor and cherish this country when it so easily demonstrates it's contempt for the middle class and especially the poor. The GOP are a cancer and they know it. They are sucking the life from this country and robbing me of my interest in staying here. It's getting to a point now that if I could move anywhere else, I would.

OK, let's try to remove some of the confusion.

1: This is a civil case not a criminal case.

2: E Jean Carroll has already stated she is NOT settling so it's going right to the end.

3: Rule of law: Never ask a question you don't already know the answer to.

4: If he is subpoenaed and doesn't show he will be hit with a contempt of court order with some sort of penalty. Could be 30 days in jail could be $100K for every day he doesn't show. His lawyers would also be in some jeopardy.

5: If he gets caught in a lie he would probably lose the case and then it would be whatever she is asking for and punitive along with some huge legal fees.

Unlike a criminal case, it doesn't require a full jury agreement to convict. It's either 7 or 9 out of 12 if I remember correctly.

You've got to wonder if Donnie isn't worried about some shit he pulled back in his teen and college days that might be sitting on CODIS
