Yup, the LHC came online in 2015. Coincidence? I think not.

The first collision created a mini singularity that split the timeline.

Our original timeline is well on their way toward a post scarcity society. Along with the Berenstein Bears and Fruit of the Loom with a cornucopia in the logo.

Fucking ALL ( most, really) new cars are completely unattainable now.

Outside of the smallest compacts, most places dropped 'regular' sedans. Yes some of the imports like Honda or Toyota are closer to 20k if you can even find a base model but with all the 'shortages' and asinine dealer gouging they're cresting 30k+ still

There's a reason the 'average' cost of a new car is something horrific like 42k. Part of that is the SUV/Big truck obsession. People getting 8+ year term loans to keep the payments under $1000/mo.

Used cars shot up to the moon and are most of the cost of a new car, even a 'beater' that looks like crap, in the 100k+ miles club, and is a 2010(12 years old) but runs reliably is 10k+ most places.

25

u/OldRuskiNoir 8d ago

I just sold a 2017 Toyota suv with ~75k miles for about 65% of what I paid for it half a decade ago.

Used car prices are nuts now.

Not saying you're completely wrong on them dropping sedans and lower end models, but the big automakers are still putting things in that price point.

48

u/melez 8d ago

Yeah and some fucky dealer down the street from me has a base model maverick, “used” with 30 miles, that they’re asking $40k for.

Just because the MSRP is $20k, doesn’t mean anyone will sell it for msrp.

Tesla is doing everything to promote Ford’s Lightning. They delay it so it comes out after the Lightning, despite being announced over a year prior, they raise the price to be more expensive than a basic Lighting, and let us not forget they designed it to look like something no average truck owner would want to buy.

574

u/KyledKat 8d ago edited 7d ago

Tesla is doing everything to promote Ford’s Lighting.

And Chevy Silverado EV. And the GMC Hummer EV. And the Rivian which is [theoretically] available right now...

Musky had a nominal lead 3 years ago when he announced it, but that window is gone.

Edit: RIP inbox. To clarify my Rivian comment, I mean “theoretically” as in they are trickling out though you’re likely not able to get one without massive markups if you didn’t preorder/reserve on years ago.

Yeah, the original draw of the cybertruck was that it was cheaper than most other trucks. If it is more expensive then there is almost no reason to really get it.

58

u/markwrichards 8d ago

The base model Lightning is almost certainly being sold at a loss- so I can't see any way the Cybertruck isn't a LOT more expensive.

88

u/Upper_Decision_5959 8d ago edited 8d ago

Ford CEO even said himself he wanted the F150 Lightning out there so Ford can get into the market early even if their selling at a loss. It's basically a gutted F150 with battery/motors that's why they got into market fast.

19

u/markwrichards 7d ago

It's basically a gutted F150 with battery/motors that's why they got into market fast.

The base model Lightning is the same as the base model gas XL truck in terms of trim- just with electric motors. And for fleet use- it's a perfect truck for a lot of companies (plus fleet users can order it with the larger battery).

A vehicle that will completely rely on being assembled with no panel gaps? That doesn't sound like Tesla?

62

u/thekernel 8d ago

to be fair it is made from notoriously easy to stamp and shape stainless steel..

29

u/whats_not_in_a_name 8d ago

My material knowledge is slim lol

Is stainless steel especially easy to stamp/shape? or is it actually harder and you're being sarcastic?

72

u/IEatBabies 8d ago

Stainless steel is incredibly hard to stamp and shape, especially on a factory line trying to push large numbers of them out. Even the tiniest changes in steel composition or die wear can cause it to be out of spec, and further more because he wants flat panels and sharp corners, which are even harder to stamp perfectly, even the tiniest imperfections will stand out like a sore thumb.

Tons of his engineers told him it was too expensive and difficult to manufacture for a competitive price, and he gave them a boot and said he wants engineers that will do it as he wanted, thinking it wasn't actually that difficult to overcome. But as it turns out, the engineers were right. If stainless steel was easy to work with we would be making nearly everything out of it. Material wise it isn't super expensive, the expensive part is making things out of it because it is a difficult material to shape.

I have numerous bets that it'll never launch. an "exoskeleton" will never pass crash test ratings. their entire idea is to make the outside body super rigid. meanwhile modern cars are designed with crumple zones to protect the passengers.

only elon would think it's safer for the passengers to hit the dashboard at 90mph instead of the car getting scratched.

EDIT: and lets hypothesize you make crumple zones with your stainless-steel rigid body panels. the passenger compartment becomes a deli slicer. the cybertruck never would have made it past the drawing board at a state university.

101

u/dorsalus 8d ago

That's why they're also developing that bouncy ball tech from Speed Racer, in case of a crash the explosive bolts will fire and eject the passengers to safety. They just need to work out the ejection mechanism, and the ball deployment, and the false positives from bumping the curb in parking lots, and how to not splatter people when deploying inside tunnels. Minor issues really.

37

u/yopladas 8d ago

Meanwhile this tool is trying to specifically design a car to not have any because he doesn't like the idea of his precious vanity project getting damaged.

Also, let's put sharp corners on all the potential impact points, because we need to throw extra unnecessary danger in there just for the fun of it

My wife's boss recently sold her two year old Kia Telluride because it was worth more to sell it used than it costs to buy new. The car market makes no sense these days

u/zhantoo 8d ago

It actually does. You want a cheap car? Wait 12 months. Want a car now? Pay more.

The $40k price was always a lie. Even at the time of announcement the cheapest Model 3 was about $40k. And a Model 3 is like half the size with half the battery capacity.

14

u/gebuzz 8d ago

Of course the price was a lie…most mid size trucks at the time of announcement were going for 50k(now they’re up to 60k) there was no way an all electric luxury vehicle was gonna go for cheaper. You would be a fool to have thought that

Either my mind is playing tricks on me, or Elon said something to the effect of "it's cheaper because we don't have to paint it".

Pfft.

90k? Good hell, how do they have a market at all?

11

u/value_added_bullshit 8d ago

That's basically the price of a fully loaded pickup truck or SUV, so there's plenty of market.

The top 10% of income earners have more money than the bottom 90% combined. Makes more sense to sell cars aimed at the upper class until that market is saturated.

Breaking the indestructible window during the unveiling should have been a hint how it would go.

Seeing as manufactures are now making actual, real, good EVs and seeing those EVs more and more in the real world as each month goes by, it’s really looking like Tesla is missing the boat they were the first to arrive at.

Edit: This is anecdotal of course, I’ve seen the share of Teslas on the road around me dropping from virtually 100% of EVs a few years ago to maybe 60% today. Seeing a lot of Ford, VW and Kia EVs now.

Once Elon fixes the window issue, how will first responders get in the cyber truck in case of emergencies?

7

u/Shatter_Goblin 7d ago edited 7d ago

Also why would you you want shatterproof windows? What is more likely:

  • something comes through the window

  • your head hits the window and your head is damaged instead of the window breaking

I'm not sure, at least where I am, firefighters tend to open cars up like a tuna can when there's a bad crash. Doubt the glass will matter much when it comes to that. On the other hand though, the stainless steel exoskeleton might if it's as strong and thick as I imagine it'd need to be.

Is it also going to be uglier than originally planned?

33

u/mongoose3000 8d ago

Actually yes, to make it legal they added some mirrors from Autozone

u/Pancakewagon26 8d ago

How could it be?

A sick spoiler. You know, for aerodynamics.

Seems like it. Just when you thought the concept couldn't get worse they tacked on some hideous mirrors for the retail version to be street legal
