TIL Celine Dion once said she got along more with older children and adults while as a child, preferring to not go to school due to being bullied; her brother would eventually introduce 12-year-old Celine to 38-year-old Rene, who would be her career manager and eventual husband. R5

The word 'eventually' is doing a ton of work.

2.5k

u/AlbionPCJ Jun 29 '22

"Eventually" here meaning about eight years. According to the Wikipedia page OP linked, her mother knew it was a problem that Celine was into him and tried to keep her away from him but she rebelled at 19 and started dating him anyway. Not a great look all round

u/PigletRivet Jun 29 '22

At least her mother recognized that she shouldn’t be around him. A lot of parents in showbiz just allow predators into their children’s lives.

u/Bama_Peach Jun 29 '22

I immediately thought of Aaliyah and R. Kelly when I read your comment. The fact that, to this day, her parents deny (to the public) that there was a relationship between the two when there was a mountain of evidence proving otherwise tells me everything I need to know.

He talks about Michael Jackson a lot a lot and compares himself to him. Also he was accused of doing grooming type behaviors to Billie Eilish and the Girl who plays 11 in stranger things. And Jorja Smith as well.

Well he rented out a restaurant for some girls 18th bday which was odd. Reports of him texting Millie Bobbie brown a lot...just odd stuff. His music is absolute dogshit as well, in case you haven't heard it.

Yeah the parents just covering up allowing their child to be groomed, abused and probably pissed on by R Kelly.

RIP Aaliyah; Jet Li spoke how fond and how much respect he had for her when they worked together in Vancouver on Romeo Must Die and he still gets sad thinking of her when visiting that city to this day

27

u/Icy_Hippo Jun 29 '22

Interest the 29 June is his sentencing hearing.....I'm sure it won't be long enough for the years of abuse and him giving zero fucks about it either.

96

u/infernalspacemonkey Jun 29 '22

To add another layer of WTF, "Romeo Must Die" is a modern retelling of Romeo and Juliet. Yet the passion of the most well known romantic couple in literature culminates in a hug because a version of the movie where Jet Li, an asian male, and Aaliyah, a black woman, kissing wasn't "believable" for audiences. SMH.

80

u/hammyhamm Jun 29 '22

Also because Jet Li didn’t think it was respectful to Aaliyah as she much younger than he

That said, fast forward a few years to Maggie and Glen boning in primetime on the walking dead and we’ve come a long way

4

u/stabliu Jun 29 '22

I recall Li also saying his characters father and brother figure both just died and that kissing/romance wasn’t appropriate

26

u/infernalspacemonkey Jun 29 '22

Yeah, I don't believe that part about age difference. It's a movie, it's also one of the most well known romances of all time. Not to menton the fact that looks are all that counts in Hollywood and Jet Li looked young enough.

A kiss, or a love scene (filmed) wasn't going to ruin anyone's reputation. Omitting physical intimacy was the departure, and accepting it is the systemic racism.

You can imagine 9 months of press tours asking time and again why there was no love scene in a "Romeo and Juliet" re-telling and I believe that Jet Li's "respect" answer being the best way to "answer" interviews questions without going into the hypocrisy of the whole AM treatment.

Yes, we had some hope with Glen and "Crazy Rich Asians" but other than "Shang-Chi" crickets....

I guess the momentum of Hollywood's systemic racism is too much to overcome in the pursuit of Asia's billions of moviegoers wallets'.

5

u/metamaoz Jun 29 '22

Look up hassue hayakawa. Pushback on asians have been in Hollywood's history since the start.

5

u/infernalspacemonkey Jun 29 '22

Did you mean "Sessue Hayakawa"?

Checkout the documentary "The Slanted Screen" he's featured in there.

9

u/hammyhamm Jun 29 '22

I’m quoting jet li talking about filming the movie, bud.

Yes Hollywood is racist but I don’t think that was the reason here, especially as the movie was made in Vancouver, Canada and not Hollywood

8

u/waun Jun 29 '22

It’s not an issue of where it was filmed but rather who the producers were.

That being said for all its faults, Kim’s Convenience, an actual Canadian show, broke down a lot of barriers too - eg Jung pretty much constantly gets it on with girls regardless of ethnicity.

u/infernalspacemonkey Jun 29 '22 edited Jun 29 '22

Yes, I saw that quote. And I do believe he said it - because at the end of the day he's an actor, selling a product and he wants to continue working.

But I also believe Occam's Razor. What is more likely...

That a retelling of "Romeo and Juliet" the classic tale of two star-crossed lovers uniting against the odds of two families' vendetta should end in a hug because (And remember, "Romeo"/Han fights and kills to be with her - Han even kills his own "brother") so yeah he was totally thinking they were "just friends"...

a) the producers thought it was disrespectful that the actors had a 14 year age difference (you know, in the industry that chronically pairs elderly leading men with underage actresses).

Or

b) the producers believed that an Asian Male "Romeo" kissing a Black Female "Juliet" was such an unpopular (ingrained systemic racist) visual that audiences would accept a "nice hug" instead.

Remember that this was pre-Social Media influence so these decisions were made in the studio Echo Chamber.

For more on AM treatment in Cinema watch "The Slanted Screen" ...

My best friend growing up had this done to him. There was a rich man in the neighbourhood with lots of classic cars and my friend was fascinated by them. The man kept offering to take him on holidays and other trips and his mother just let it all happen.

41

u/ThirdWaveTaliban Jun 29 '22 edited Jun 29 '22

There was a post on /r/tifu where this older guy was grooming a young dude. Giving him $5k cause he helped work on a car he sold and shit. Reddit loved it, though. Everyone calling the situation out got downvoted. The fuck uo was driving through a BLM rally with this hot young blonde guy, listening to Sabaton which seemingly would make tbem seem like Nazis, which doesn’t even make sense. No one thinks that.

It seemed like an obvious troll, but it could’ve been a dude just wanting to talk about his minor crush. Was gross either way how Reddit loved it.

Edit: Link in reply below. Here is the top Voted Comment from /u/DunbartonshireGho

The dynamic you and Chaz have is so heartwarming. Kid hates it at home and you gave him a second one, and you seem to treat him like a true progeny. You'd make a good father.

Think of any parent seeing their teenaged boy described like he does by a man who spends a lot of time with him and acts surprised that $5,000 was a lot for a teenager.

Like come on.

7

u/DestructionIsBliss Jun 29 '22

Oh there's definitely a lot of neonazi Sabaton fans out there. Didn't know quite how many until I saw all the nazi salutes rise up while they played Deutschland in early 2020. I was pretty far in the back so I don't know if they just concentrated themselves in areas where security might be less dense, but I have some scepticism towards that thought.

106

u/darkenedgy Jun 29 '22

4

u/loulan Jun 29 '22

58

u/elleusesreddit Jun 29 '22

Key word here is "looks."

197

u/S_A_N_D_ Jun 29 '22

Looks:

As in they married when she was 25, had three children together, and were married up until his death from cancer in 2016.

She was infatuated with him as a child, but it seems clear this was well known by those around here and there doesn't appear to be any indication anything inappropriate happened (or even any real opportunity as her mother kept a close eye).

89

u/Garn91575 Jun 29 '22

It's still creepy as hell. There is not a single 12 year old I met at the age of 38 who I would ever look at in a sexual way even when they grow up. Hell I am in my 40's and just the thought of being involved with someone who is 19 (like he did) is creepy as shit, and even more so he knew her when she was as child. He may not have had underage sex with her but he sure as shit was grooming her, or to put it a little more bluntly, that dude was perving on a 12 year old. Even if it was all her any decent man shuts that shit down fast, and wouldn't even dream about "well when she gets older maybe we can hook up." Just the fact her mother had to keep on eye on shit means things probably would have gone down without her there. I'm sorry, I don't care how things turned out.

37

u/Subterania Jun 29 '22

It doesn’t really matter because of how famous she was, but in similar stories about huge age gaps I just have to assume social gatherings are weird as hell. Like I’m not hanging out with my friends boyfriend who’s older than my dad. And if I’m 40 I sure as hell am not hanging out with my loser friends 20-year old girlfriend.

5

u/Techutante Jun 29 '22

Maybe she's smart? She'll teach you new memes.

15

u/radiantcabbage Jun 29 '22

nobody implied he was attracted to her until she was old enough to make her own decisions, so idk where you crafted this narrative from. it assumes this predator had free influence over someone with no agency of their own, I mean you were just told the literal opposite.

"groomed" minors inevitably doubt their feelings by the time they become mature enough to rationalise them, obviously because of the superficial attraction, they don't grow old and die with people in lasting relationships full of wealth and autonomy. no one implied he somehow controlled her income, or put her in a position to rely on him at any point. this kind of influence doesn't typically result in well adjusted, successful businesswomen.

doesn't sound like you even know what "grooming" is at all, you need to stop abusing verbs that breed rampant paranoia, and put other people in super awkward positions around totally normal social situations.

u/Caughtnow Jun 29 '22

Probably bias coz Im a fan, but the story always was that nothing happened while she was underage. As an adult, you can do whatever you want, with other consenting adults!

Also have a bit of an inside perspective on this. There is an almost 8 year gap between me and my SO. Which doesnt seem like much, but it appears to be more. To the point where the place we bought a decade ago, I introduced myself to my new next door neighbour and he remarked something about me and "my dad" ...... awkward.

47

u/PA2SK Jun 29 '22

That's ALWAYS the story in these situations. I don't know if anything happened when she was underage or not, but I'm sure that if something did happen they would never admit to it. That's the kind of thing you take to your grave. I'm also sure that an adult male befriending a 12 year old girl, who he later marries, is pretty weird and hard to believe there wasn't some type of grooming happening.

60

u/Nikashi Jun 29 '22

I think the problem is he knew her since she was TWELVE (and he was 38, who the fuck befriends 12 year olds at 38???) and he was 45 when they started dating. That kinda meets the textbook actual definition of what 'grooming' is, and it looks like her mom saw the same thing.

  1. They started formally dating when she was 20 & married when she was 25.

96

u/SuddenlyElga Jun 29 '22

I mean, but it’s not like he put her aside when she got too old. They were married until his death in 2016 or whatever. I think this was a legit May-May of the following year romance.

It doesn’t look good but I don’t think this was a victim of grooming thing.

42

u/imbeingsirius Jun 29 '22

14

u/Iced-TeaManiac Jun 29 '22

22

u/martha_stewarts_ears Jun 29 '22

They’re riffing on the joke that a May-December romance is one where there’s a big gap in age

55

u/PA2SK Jun 29 '22

Just because they had a long and seemingly happy marriage doesn't mean she wasn't groomed. 12 year Olds are very impressionable. An adult could very well bend one to his will and form a bond with her that lasts a lifetime. That's grooming. If they ended up living in a trailer park with their 3 kids I'm sure people would call it that but since she was so successful people don't want to believe there was anything inappropriate in their pasts.

7

René Angélil (Céline's husband) best friend is a convicted child molester. Guy Cloutier was Managing another family (the Simard) and abused child star Nathalie since she was nine.

They were rumors about Céline and René well before her 19th birthday. He divorced his second wife when Céline was 17.

294

u/aethelberga Jun 29 '22

Geez, René Simard. There's a name I haven't thought about in a while.

I'm sure that if it was investigated, he also took a lot of money from them. Nathalie made a lot of albums and had a TV show for years but was almost broke when she was a young woman. Where did all the money go?

Plus there's no mention anywhere that his wife divorced him.

It's so funny because I just so happened to listen to Imperfections in the shower today - that whole album was dedicated to her mourning his death, but I had no idea the full context until I just now found this post.

65

It makes more sense knowing that she was the youngest of 14 kids, with three of her siblings being over twenty years older than her, of course she's going to get along better with older children and adults than peers her own age.

Does that make her relationship age-gap any less creepy? :| meh.

But knowing that her husband was a generational peer to her siblings rather than her parents at least gives a bit of context. A very slight bit.

10

I have long thought that her story is the exception that proves the rule in people with such deeply unequal power balances. The age gap was only one of them.

So she started working from age of 12? And this guy Angelìl helped her with building career, getting opportunities etc? And they married when she was 25 and he was 51, 26 years her senior. I wonder how much was his hand in her career.

u/Leather_Vegetable_23 Jun 29 '22

Sadly, it would seem that his hand was in a lot of her...business.

The amount of creeps on this thread defending this type of behavior is astounding and it makes me sick. I’m seeing comments defending this type of behavior with literally HUNDREDS OF UPVOTES!!!!

It doesn’t matter, at any point in her life, if Dion defended this relationship - that is quite literally why sexual grooming is illegal and has lifelong psychologically damaging effects to its victims.

In these cases I always think of that guy whose teacher raped him and she got pregnant and went to prison and when she got out they got married.

Yeats later he said he thought the whole thing was his fault because he came on to her. He was an adult and their daughter was around his age when he was raped.

This always makes me sick. I've taught hundreds of middle school kids, I couldn't imagine being anything but a teacher and a protector, even when little boys practice flirting on me, which is normal and healthy for them, I shut it down immediately and set boundaries, because a) they need to explore their preferences with kids their own age and b) I could never in a million years be sexually attracted to a minor. They still have their baby faces and are just so clearly children, I maintain only a predator can spend time with a child and be attracted to them, because they're not interested in their minds or their beliefs.

u/CHANROBI Jun 29 '22

100% pedophile relationship lol

2

u/ChillWisdom Jun 29 '22

Still seems suuuuuuper creepy.

2

u/IrrelevantLeprechaun Jun 29 '22

Being famous and eventually getting married once she was 25 doesn't change the fact that it was a very creepy relationship up until that point.

The more we try to handwave this stuff, the more it will happen in less supervised situations.

2

u/Kynch Jun 29 '22

If you’d like to get a feeling for the creepiness of it all, do watch the recent film Aline which, although it kind of downplays how it was, still shows their relationship and everyone’s disapproval of it.

8

u/Nard_Bard Jun 29 '22

Um. Yikes.
